I love KDramas, but I recently began watching historical KDramas and I’ve NOT BEEN disappointed. I find these historical dramas hit in a way the modern dramas do not. The amazing cinematography, political scheming, family secrets, moving OSTs, and frequent focus on forbidden love have hooked me. A great list! But MY favorites are 1. Hwarang - eye candy, OST, comedy, football game, dance, love triangle, love the actors. 2. Mr Queen - so funny and fun, story, OST, costume, food, almost a triangle, love the actors. 3. Moon Lovers- Scarlet - love story, actors, OST, costume 4. Moon embracing the sun and scarlet heart literally made me feel a sea of emotions. They are seriously my it couple. The amount of tears I had shed for this... Mr Queen is lit... This list is intriguing to watch, but as someone who came from slightly older generation, I would recommend Dae Jang Geum( Jewel in The Palace). It is an old school drama with no marvelous special effect or stunning makeup and costume, but the story line was chef’s kiss from me. It is quite long though (52 eps if I’m not mistaken), but it was well worth it. I still re watch it sometimes

I watched mr.Queen after The Red Sleeve and although I liked it, sadness remained in my heart. The old queen from mr.Queen is the daughter-in-law of YiSan from The Red Sleeve. Her husband, her children, her grandson, they are all dead. The current king of mr.Queen is a descendant of YiSan's brother whom he exiled.

As someone who has recently discovered romantic historical dramas and fusion/youth sageuks I’m not sure I fully agree with this list. Moon Embracing the Sun, Mr Queen and Mr Sunshine should all of course be there, as should the Red Sleeve. But much as I loved Jung So-Min as Mu-deok in Alchemy of Souls, Alchemy is a fantasy drama rather than a historical drama. So, for instance, while there is time-travel in Mr Queen, the actual drama takes place in a (fictionally) recognisable historical time-period, and so merits being termed a historical drama or fusion sageuk (albeit with fantasy elements). Some really moving and fun recent fusion/youth sageuks I would recommend include: The King’s Affection, the Crowned Clown, Under the Queen’s Umbrella, Love in the Moonlight (Moonlight Drawn by Clouds), Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung, 100 Hundred Days My Prince, My Sassy Girl, and of course the currently airing Our Blooming Youth. For a slightly older classic (from 2010), the Sungkyunkwan Scandal - starring Park Min Young and Song Joong Ki - can’t be beaten. And although I haven’t seen it yet - as I’m still waiting for it to become available again in the UK - the Princess’ Man is highly recommended by others who appreciate this genre.

Update: having just binge-watched 34 episodes of Empress Ki, I’m totally sold on Ha Ji-won’s portrayal of Seung Nyang/Yang. What an epic! What a badass lead character. I’ve skipped much of the bros fighting storyline, and focussed on the plot lines involving Ha Ji-won, and yet I don’t feel as though I’ve missed out on the main dramatic story. I now see why the Empress Ki has to be there on any recent Korean historical drama (although I still don’t understand why Alchemy is there).

Right now I’m watching Jang Ok Jung, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I don’t care too much about historical exactitude, and I’m a fan of Kim Tae-hee, so I’m sold on this beautiful drama…. Well, up until around episode 8 this was the case, but it goes down hill after that with bad writing and repetitive, hysterical and annoying plot devices. Which is a great shame as Kim Tae-hee’s acting deserved a whole lot more from the director and writing staff. The first 8 episodes are still worth the watch - they had great potential, which may have been realised in wiser hands.

Love in the Moonlight was outstanding as was 100 days my Prince. I also enjoyed the Crowned Clown, Secret Royal Inspector, the King's affection, and Lovers of the Red Sky each, immensely entertaining and heartwarming! The only year I concur with this look back drama overview, would be Alchemy of Souls! It kept you riveted each week. As an aside, there are many that I love and have recently watched. One that remains etched in my memory is "Saimdang: Memoir of Colors" which i believe is 2017. I cannot recommend that one enough! Look forward to further suggestions...thank you very much!

@@salmamoalim6656 Heh, yeah, S2 definitely felt like an unplanned add-on in a lot of ways, whether they’d originally meant to do it or not. Because, as you say, it felt like they had both too much and too little material for 10 episodes. Now, I felt S1 had similar issues (though it never felt rushed), but the show was far too charming for that to matter-and I felt similarly about S2. I was just happy to spend more time with the characters, and, to that end, I had fun with it. To the point where they could do an S3 that equally feels like an add-on, and I’d eat it up, too. I’ve literally got it on right now. They’ve got me for as long as they want me on the hook.

I have NEVER laughed in any show as much as I did in Mr Queen and comedy wasn't even its main theme!😂😂😂 The romance and mystery was also very well written so it remains one of my top kdramas. And Alchemy Of souls was just other-worldly⚡️ I've rarely seen a fantasy story executed so well. I was still in school for my end semester exams when season 2 came out so i shunned KZbin for a whole 2 weeks because of all the SPOILERRSS!😂😂 And both have the gang of friends standing up to fight common evil trope that i love so much✊️

There's wrong photo of the drama Secret Royal Agent!! When I found these dramas, I was confused because of the titles. For some reason there are two dramas with very similar names - Secret Royal Inspector a.k.a. Secret Royal Agent (2020, Native title: 암행어사: 조선비밀수사단), and Secret Royal Inspector & Joy (2021, Native title: 어사와 조이). The first one aired between the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021. The main leads in this drama are Kim Myung-Soo and Kwon Na-Ra. The second one aired around November 2021, the leads are Ok Taek-Yeon and Kim Hye-Yoon. To sum up, drama mentioned in the video (09:03) is Secret Royal Inspector (2020) BUT the photo is from the Secret Royal Inspector & Joy (2021). I can't recommend any of these dramas simply because I didn't watch them, I just wanted to clear out this little misunderstanding which could be caused by the wrong photo :)

It was the first historical Kdrama I ever watched and I've never seen a better show. Only Six Flying Dragons managed to equal it for sheer impact and epicness.

Have you checked out Princess Weiyoung (Chinese drama)? I found it to be similarly epic as well...

I love watching Korean historical shows. My top favorites are Jumong, The Red Sleeve, Cruel Palace: The War of Roses, Yi San, Dong Yi, Haechi, Empress Ki, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeon, Jang Ok Jung, Love In The Moonlight, Queen for Seven Days, Moon Embracing the Sun, Six Flying Dragons, Kingdom, Queen Insu, My Country: The New Age and The Rebel: Thief of the People. Alchemy of Souls - Season 1 was fantastic but I didn’t enjoy Season 2 as I felt it was lackluster.

Than I should recommend you one drama name the untamed Once you've seen The Untamed , no other drama can fulfill your needs, because The Untamed has set a higher standard. I've watched almost all K-dramas and C-dramas, but no drama compares to The Untamed. Untamed has all kinds of emotions it is the best drama and also most famous historical drama.. it is the most viewed historical drama . This drama is also available in many languages. And for me no kdrama or cdrama can compete with this drama

Emperess KI Scarlet heart Queen for seven days Mr. Sunshine the crowed clown Mr. Queen under the queen's umbrella. Loved them all, next on my list will be Jang OK Jung has some good actors. Korean historical dramas are the GEST.

Mr queen is the best traditional kdrama so far followed by Kings affection and scarlet heart. All other dramas mentioned here were equally tooo good. They all kept my eyes fixed on the screen

i watch a few historical drama and i like them quite a lot, i watch gu family book,hwarang, moon lovers, alchemy of souls 1 and 2, then these kdrama keeps popping up mr queen, people said it was good but i didnt watch it because of the plot since the male lead going back in the past in the woman's body i didnt like it so ignored it, but when i run out of kdrama to watch and some of them are boring then i said, welp might as well try it and see what the fuss about mr quee, first episode 30mins watching it, finish the first episode watch the second, and time flys by and i already watch 8episode in one day lol and it got me hook i had to stop since am so sleepy but the next day i watch it and finish it, and i rewatch it again, now i understand why they suggested mr queen, its fun, funny, romantic and its like a light version of moon lovers where no one dies except her bff but thats not so important, if a kdrama have watch the first episode and the next and the episode after that, then that is one hell of a kdrama and i would highly recommend it!

Ever since Empress Ki definitely broke my heart apart, I find every tragic k-drama series less depressing. Anyway, historical k-dramas never fail us to indulge on amazing story plots and turns not mention DONG YI, Mr. Sunshine and a lot more.

I would totally have picked Hwarang for 2016 ‼️In fact, out of all the historical dramas I have watched and it is a vast amount , Hwarang is one of the very BEST. It has every element you could possibly want in a historical drama ‼️‼️‼️
