This movie taught me for the first time that horror truly can be intelligently compelling and visually gorgeous. Im a fan of the old slashers, and just assumed that was all the good the genre had to offer. At best, campy popcorn movies. This, however, was something I had never experienced and loved it. I'm sick of jump scares and cheap, used up tropes, so I hope to see more movies like this come out. Thanks for the review! You guys nailed it.

I see horror movies since I was 9 (I'm 27 now) so nowadays horror movies rarely scare me, but this one did it for me, I found myself shaking until I fell sleep that night, and I still think about it sometimes, what I love the most of it it's the atmosphere, the dad was cutting wood and I was shaking with a knot in my stomach because I knew shit was gonna go down any second, dread and evil is in every frame of this movie.

the witch is closer to Kubricks the Shinning. It's atmosphere is what it's all about and you already seen the Witch by the first 10 minutes and it's all about watching someone fall apart. This is how good the witch was, when they reveal the Red Witch in GoT, it was like meh since witch spoiled it with a witch that's really gruesome and disturbing.

I agree with Bibs, I didn’t love it at first. Yet it was captivating and lingered in my mind long after. Now with some distance look back on it, it was a well done film that really put you into that old Puritan mindset and paranoia.

Another divisive one, I remembered The Exorcist and Nosferatu watching it in the sense that like the poster says, it's a folklore tale, it chooses to be a period drama with horror elements in it, and like I said in the Babadook video, people now preffer to watch a cheap jumpscare in a cliche story. And most importantly, it has themes that are relevant today, especially with the ending and what it says about women in our society.

Great director ! Movies these days rely too much on jump scares which in my opinion gets old. This film was truly unsettling in its purest basic form. How it was shot was brilliant and I feel was spot on to the rating it was given by these guys.

This is really cool, we just did a history based review about "The Witch" on Geeks. Normally not a fan of the horror genre but I love the attention to historical detail. Though I must disagree that you can take the film literally or as dream/something in their minds. There are simply too many scenes that make it much too difficult to think this is all in the families mind. Early on it is very clearly established there is a witch who has supernatural powers and the scene does not involve the family or their point of view. We just see the witch on her own doing witch stuff (supernatural witch stuff). I think of this as a "what if film" about what if there were Witches (supernatural ones) in early New England? -Shane Goodrich

I appreciate the craft involved in the film, I just don’t find it to be very scary. It has the chance to say a lot of interesting things about religious hysteria at the time, but instead justifies the family’s religious hysteria by making the witch and Satan real.

the witch is real, there is no psycological iterpretation, and thats very clear in the movie, no doubt in my opinion

It may have been well shot and acted and may technically be part of the horror genre, since the subject matter is supernatural murder, but I found it not scary in the least. I had to stop myself from laughing everytime I saw the goat. That thing was straight out of a B-Movie. As was the teenage incest plotline. The movie just failed to touch me at all, because I couldn't empathize with any of the characters. I've seen movies about religious nutjobs before and this was just one of them to me.
