Could you do "blind" on ice tests with players who have never used such runners?? What's the price of these after market runners? How do I know I'm buying the right size to fit my holders? Dose this effect my skates warranty??? What level of play will see the most benefit? Beer league or professional Ps sorry for rambling on As a last thought David Clarke is hosting his annual adult training clinic at Nottingham arena (could be an opportunity to get a side by side comparison rec and pro) And lastly think a great video would be one on camps / clinics that are available during the off season would open people's eyes to what's available nearby or as a summer holiday treat Thanks Max

With massiveblade I couldn't believe how alleviating the skating all of a sudden felt and was. The best about massive blades for me is the confidence at which you lean into the turns and keep gliding on the way out. Never happened that blades will slow you or you get stuck in the turn at high speeds, on the other hand will help you speed up. The maneuverability in turns is awesome. More incredible thing is that the blades don't need sharpening at all and still keep it's mentioned qualities. The blades improves a player's game in many aspects:1. 100% reliability -> amazing confidence in skating maneuvers -> skating technique best practiced; 2. energy saving in every stride, improved glide -> longer glide -> leg strength plummets -> even more energy saving for a player; 3. sharp turns and quick turnovers and starts feels absolutely save and effortless and with absolute confidence, even the ice is totally broken from you turning hard. 4. Sharpening almost no need (up to 6 months); 5. Optimal height (step steel are way too much high, which decreases your stability) and optimal radius profile (best for speed vs. maneuverability, to compare with step steel, where you have to do some profiling in toes, not to stumble while leaning forward to make a dash) 6. New technology and color design. Am sure by now, that nothing will improve your game better, than the technology in the material of the blades. Just awesome piece of sport technology and a must for everyone who is looking to be an elite skater.

@francescoqueirolo59567 жыл бұрын
With normal metal/steel assuming the same alloy composition (which is certainly unlikely) hardening steel is usually done by 1. adding more carbon to the steel and changing the molecular arrangement of the material. In all other applications that I am aware of harder steel (hardness measured in something like Rockwell) makes a more brittle material that while holding it's edge better during use is MORE prone to cracking and chipping. While I think your video is informative I think it's important to provide sources if you are going to say the blades are harder and don't crack/break as easily because that is not usually the case in (all?) other metallurgical applications. Also, for the average person changing steel is in IMO almost irrelevant but that is subjective. The physics I just mentioned should be addressed.
@fredrikbystrom73804 жыл бұрын
It is actually possible for steel to be both harder and less prone to cracking / chipping, but that's more costly to produce and only holds true up to a certain point.

Tydan Black with DLC and Step Steel Black Steel with a DLC are very comparable, but with a slight exception and that's height. Step Steel is definitely a little taller than Tydan and Tydan has a slightly less aggressive front of the blade. What I'd like to see is a video talking about whether or not the extra height of Step Steel is actually a good thing. It's been my experience skating on Step Steel for years now, that you can in fact cut a little tighter, but it comes at the cost of stability.

Have you done, or considered doing, a video on flatness versus rocker on the blade. I use a radius rocker on my blades and you mentioned in this video that the taller Step Steel blade is better because of its shape. I would challenge that for those more advanced skaters who are not used to such a flat blade. Radius blades turn faster and carve better than flatter blades. IMHO.

The old SLM "Dynasteel" carbon steel blades that were commonly used in the '80s and '90s by CCM (such as the SL-5000) were as hard or harder than anything on the market today. Even their stainless steel version (SL-6000) was quite hard. Average Rockwell hardness for their carbon steel blades was 58; 56 for their stainless steel blades. By comparison, Tuuk's stainless steel blades were a pathetic 51.6, and 51.7 for their carbon steel blades: i.imgur.com/GcC8Lmc.png For a modern comparison, Massive Blades' blades range from 55 to 56.5 on the Rockwell C hardness scale, according to their website. The old ICM "Super Steel" carbon steel blades, as seen on various Canstar skates (Bauer, Micron, etc.) from the '80s and '90s, were also known for holding an edge, though I don't know where exactly they ranked on the Rockwell C hardness scale.
@HawksFan58845 жыл бұрын
When players say the black steel gets taken off when you get them sharpened. I don’t think they’re talking about the bottom where the sharpening wheel hits it. I think they mean the finish that gets taken off the sides when they’re stoned. A lot of places will still stone this kind of steel. Probably b/c this black steel burrs up more then carbon black steels, or they don’t have a leather hone.
@3beltwesty7 жыл бұрын
Some History, Chrome is added on non stainless blades to reduce corrosion. Hockey skate blades many decades ago where high carbon steel, the blades were chromed so the sides were not so ugly. They runners rusted like mad, like any high carbon steel does with moisture. When stainless Hockey blades came out ,some places did not like to sharpen them, ie stainless loads up the grinding wheel more. With STEP V steel runners the material is stainless, the sides are polished so the claim is the edge is better. ie at the micro level there is no effective change in thickness (heel to toe) of the runner.

From the Goalie side, (those weird slow moving guys that like getting hit by pucks, and hate suicide skating) I've used Step Steel Extreme and Step Steel standard for a couple years now. I prefer Extreme, but it does have its downside, mostly on the additional stress it puts on the knees and ankles. I wouldn't recommend them for young skaters for this reason, as they're still growing and developing, and putting unnecessary stress on their joints is always a bad idea. That said, why extreme versus standard? Comes down to in close proximity play. I'm able to get much lower to the ice in my stance before my edges simply slip out in extreme blades than standard, also during pushes, the angle I have to bring my knee up for a hard lateral pushes is significantly less which means getting my edge to push much harder, and a quicker. This also means a faster close on my butterfly at the end because my pushing knee is closer to the ice. I'm also taller in the net in my stance, and as a tall goalie, appearing bigger than your predator can have a psychological effect on them, that's just nature. While this all sounds appealing for young skaters, putting additional wear and tear on your joints, especially while they're still developing is not worth the gain. Hockey is a great sport, and incurring stress injuries that will hinder them when their fully matured is not worth the slight advantage. Learn the movements correctly as a youth, and then as an adult you can opt to cut a corner, if you choose, for a slight advantage, especially when your getting around your 40's and you need every advantage you can get when your playing against those early 20's in a 2-0 situation. "90% of hockey players dream of making those amazing goals, my dream is stopping them."

This entire video could have been shortened to just 30 seconds because StepSteel Blacksteel runners are hands down by far the best blades that ever been created by human beings. They are made in Quebec, Canada and are now in wide use by too many NHL players to mention, including Alex Ovechkin. USA-based NHL teams are buying StepSteel Blacksteel for their players in Canada as StepSteel is not legally allowed for sale in the USA due to patent restrictions. These patent restrictions do not apply in Canada so if you want to switch out your stock Bauer LS2/LS3/LS4 steel for compatible StepSteel Blacksteel, I would recommend paying the extra dollars and going for it 100%. The bite edge you get from StepSteel Blacksteel is second to none and also offers amazing glide. This is very dense steel constructed with minimal mineral impurities. I used to skate with a 5/8ths hollow for years on my old Bauer LS steel and since switching to StepSteel Blacksteel, I changed to a slightly shallower 11/16ths hollow because the edges of the steel bite so well with no loss of performance. Go StepSteel Blacksteel. Don't even think twice. Your wallet may not like you as much (they cost about $150.00 per pair) but your skating and on-ice performance will certainly not regret it.
@BlakeKubeska5 жыл бұрын
I'm actually in a very similar situation as you, Tony. I'm currently on a 5/8ths sharpening, looking at getting the Blacksteel. Thing is, I'm using Mako2 skates (CXN Holder) so i can't seem to find any compatible Blacksteel for sale. Size 288 if that makes a difference. PS: I am in Canada, but still can't seem to find em anywhere. Do I switch holders? If so, to which one?

Great video. I just got the Bauer LS5 runners for my skates. However, the guy at the shop, when he was sharpening them, wanted to use a stone at the end to get rid of the burr and hone the edges. I asked him not to since it was going to remove the carbon coating. Was I wrong to stop him? Is there something else I can/should do to get rid of the burr and hone the edges? Thanks.
@shawnalexander13056 жыл бұрын
You can use a leather hone but in all honesty even when you rub some of the coating off, there's enough of it on there (even after 2or3 years of sharpening) to do it's job. Aside from that my personal opinion is that if the grade of steel is truly higher, it shouldn't need a carbon coat. I've had HG, SB BLACK and FLARE steels and the quality of the Flare is unmatched. They're made with sword grade steel in Canada and I've never blown an edge, and I'm a 300lb solid skater

A more substantive review would have been better, with actual references to (for example) whats in the alloy of these blades? I would think some have a higher amount of chromium in them - for example. Speaking as a machinist, alloys are everything and they can be objectively compared. Its no longer fair to say that if its made overseas its got to be junk. That just isn't fair. The environmental restrictions placed on manufacturers on this continent are much tighter than a place like China - you'd have to be pretty ignorant of manufacturing to say "Chinese JUNK" today. China doing the same job without the EPA looking over their shoulder every time they move is able to produce higher quality alloys, cheaper, in less time. You can debate the environmental side if you want but you cannot say that Canada is going to produce higher quality alloys every time just by virtue of being produced in Canada. That just isn't right.

1:25 Uhh no... skate blades touching anything but the ice is quite RARE, unless you're a goalie. Unless you're just a REALLY REALLY awful player whose falling down all over the place every shift, your skate blades shouldnt touch anything like boards or the post except maybe once every 10 games, it is not common at all

Regular Step steel is by far the best runner available. Coloured blades are a gimmick.

How do i know if the blade will fit onto my skate
@HockeyTutorialOfficial7 жыл бұрын
You need to check the size first, it will be on the blade holder. Example 272, 280 this is the size of the blade.
