I'll take the Makita every time. They have been doing cordless longer then any other brand and I have never retired a Makita cordless because it broke. Matter of fact I can probably find most of them still in my shed in working order but I doubt the batteries would hold a charge any more. I recently picked up Makita's brushless 1/2" drill and driver combo to replace the ones I've been using professionally for the last 10 years without a flaw and I was wholly impressed. The drill has some real heft to it and can output some real wrist breaking torque and is likely why it came with a side handle. The impact driver is the best I have ever used and I suspect it will be just as capable 10 years from now. With the 5 amp hour batteries I can go several days some times before having to put them on the charger and I'm building decks. The programmable speed settings on the driver comes in handy because the max setting can be a little much on some work. The LED lights on both are great too. Anyone using these types of tools on a day to day will eventually drop them and we all want to them to survive the impact and I can attests that the Makita's that I have owned have taken dives off second story roof tops to concrete and survived. With my latest purchase I have only one complaint and that is the soft case that it comes with, (AKA: A bag), is to small to fit everything. There is no way to fit the side handle for the drill in the case no matter what angle or direction I may try. The case is to small. I don't even bother trying to zipper it up. Give me a hard case for my tools.

I bought my first Makita impact drill 8 or 9 years ago and use it every day, all day long . It's still working great although I've gone through several batteries. Makita had a real battery longevity issues with their early LI Ion batteries but the new designs seem to hold up well. I've dropped all my drills multiple time onto hard surfaces from one and two story scaffolding and they have always survived.I just can't seem to kill them. I used Dewalt for years but every one I owned failed due to some switch problem. I see a lot of tradesman with the Milwakees so I know their a great drill, and I think it comes down to these two. Naturally you tend to get locked into a brand of cordless tools once you start buying the more expensive higher amperage batteries. I've found Makita makes a line of cordless tools that are durable and long lasting so I've stuck with them, but truthfully I'm not knocking any other contactor grade brands because I've just stuck with the brand that treats me well.I'm 68 and when I was younger I remember the first cordless drills and I said what a joke ; I just never thought they'd make a significant "impact" on most jobs. Was I wrong.I bought the Makita cordless impact wrench and I can take all the wheels off both my trucks and reinstall with a fully charged 5 amp battery. Amazing.

That is how he does his videos and testing, and it works really good for a lot of things, ex: drill bits, utility knife blades, etc. But for tests with tools, it is something you need to take with a grain of salt because it doesn't always relate to real world performance and potential issues with the tool, ex: milwaukee's quick release issue. Iloveapplefritters, you obviously aren’t on Milwaukee’s M12 or M18 platforms and it’s obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about. When was the last time you owned a Milwaukee power tool? Milwaukee has had many innovations in the past 15 years, e.g. 18V lithium ion platform to name one. How can they be going down in quality when they have record year over year earnings? They make great tools, tools built to last. I know because I own and use them. When was the last time you called Milwaukee’s customer service, 1-800-SAW-DUST? They have service second to none, with the exception of Hilti or Festool. The6 are courteous, knowledgeable and responsive. If the tools been used and there’s an issue, Milwaukee will most likely honor their 5 year warranty (5 yr on most tools), unless the tool of course showed signs of abuse, then I suppose it would be subjective. You say down hill in the last 15 years...compared to what. Give examples and be specific! They have had all new innovation into brushless, then their Fuel platform within only the last 7 years or so. I really think you’re talking out of the dark side.

@donkey ass reviews and do's Makita did not invent the cordless drill. Black and Decker did that in 1961, YEARS before Any other brand. Yes, I've owned the Makita in the past, but they were stuck in first gear and everyone else blew past them in performance and they continued to produce the same old tools. Eventually they came out with new and improved tools, but they were and still are in a catch up mode. Are they good tools? Of course, I'm not taking that away. But we all have different needs, and we all know that when it comes to power and performance, Milwaukee dominates in that part of the market. Longevity? Milwaukee is also a leader in that arena, and I will also give a nod to Makita in their longevity department. Where are these "false figures" that you make claim to?

@donkey ass reviews and do's Also, when you are using Any power tool, you should be using ear/eye protection. When you are on a job site and there are a lot of things going on, you should be wearing safety gear any way. So if one tool makes 2 Db more than another tool, it really isn't a big deal.

How I see it: 1. As you pointed out, torque is essentially a non-issue. Pretty much any impact driver will "do the job." Some impact drivers might be a bit faster than others, but I don't think project delays are caused by "slow" fastener insertions. 2. So, what can be a big time waster? Answer: Unreliable products. The time it takes to make good on a warranty can be hours if your supplier is local or days if you bought the tool over the Internet. The best warranty is the one that never has to be used. 3. The functionality of the XDT16 saves time, reduces the likelihood of fastener damage, and yields a more consistent (read: better looking) result. I can't understand people who pretend Makita's features aren't fantastic and USEFUL. 4. Face it; an operator can't be blamed for having a strong battery-driven preference. Luckily for the major vendors, one can usually find something that will do the job no matter which vendor you pick. Lock-in is nothing to cry about if you're locked into Milwaukee or Dewalt. A particular model might need to be avoided (as was the case with the Milwaukee impact driver), but there are always alternatives from the same manufacturer. However, if you picked Makita you find yourself "locked into" a brand that regularly has the best or close to best in every tool category. As for reliability, I have never had a problem with my wide-range of Makita 18-volt products (and my corded Makita tools are likewise fantastic). I actually LOVE being locked into the brand that introduced the first battery-powered portable drill and has been innovating ever since. 5. As for the "made in China" problem, it's not truly a problem. As legendary KZbinr Scotty Kilmer will tell you, a Honda or Toyota made in Japan will be better than the same model built in the US. But that doesn't mean the US model is crap. The difference is slight enough that neither auto maker's top ranking for reliability has been affected. With Japan we're dealing with a nation of reliability fanatics. You can bet that Makita Japan maintains a critical eye on every Chinese factory to which they outsource. After all, they have a reputation to maintain.

My opinion triple hammer is the best, similar hand feel to the Makita, another is the how smooth the driving of screws due to the triple hammer and simple power settings that are not too little, and not too many, a non quick insert collet, is not a problem, as I still can use it with one hand and lastly still very powerful. Very close to gen 3 if I recall (edit because I was half asleep when I wrote this)

@VCG Construction. Thanks Vince for your honest opinions on these impacts. Over the years, I've learned that every company makes stuff that's at least works and maybe isn't the best when compared to others. It really depends on our experience. Milwaukee is really trying to innovate and get into the different trades like Dewalt. It's a real shame that Milwaukee hasn't figured out how to fix the collet issue with their GEN3 impact. Hasn't it been about three years so far? I don't have that impact so I haven't had to deal with the problem (I have three different Makita impacts and a Ridgid with no problems). Ridgid made things right replacing the chuck and motor twice on my 12V drill driver (the chuck keeps loosening and dropping bits). And Ridgid made that model drill where the chuck is riveted to the motor. A impact collet can't be that expensive to replace with one with better retention. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Hi Vince, I’ve mentioned this to you before, in fact several times...I don’t have the bit retention problems with my M18 Fuel Gen 3. The only way I was able to even semi-replicate the collet retention issue is by yanking extremely hard on the driver. But by normal use, just pulling a a 1 1/2” paddle bit out, my bit is retained. Want even more power out of your Gen 3 Impact? Then pair it with the 3, 6 or 8 amp high output batteries! I usually only run the impact with the 3 amp HO batteries, as I still get a reasonably long runtime, along with a nice boost in torque and power. Love the Gen 3 impact! I also enjoy using the Surge, however it isn’t as powerful. Here’s the deal...I fully recommend purchasing the M18 Fuel Gen3 Impact, without a second thought. If you don’t thoroughly love it, then you now have 6 months to return to Home Depot. In addition Milwaukee has customer service second to none, just call 1 (800) SAW-DUST. With a 5 year warranty on your tool, you can’t go wrong!

..I wish someone would make a video publicly pointing out the major flaws that the newer Ryobi tools have when put into everyday use...reciprocating saws where the blade chuck breaks off, held on only by a tiny thin piece of metal(had 3 do this-one was the newer expensive brushless model)...recip saw motors getting hot and melting down with just moderate use...battery pack attachment points that are inadequate for recip saw use and shake the batteries loose...and the newer-style battery packs that won't take a charge and abruptly die with very little use...(yes, most of the issues I have had have been with the batteries and the recip saws)...I know Ryobi has never been top of the line, but they were tough and a good value for the money..now, I have noticed the quality/durability declining(all while they are promoting themselves now as semi-pro), and at the same time, prices have been climbing..in other words, not really a good value anymore...

I’m a first year electrician apprentice from Australia, who bought Makita as my first impact driver. After 6 months I saved up to buy a 6 piece tool kit (impact driver, drill driver, hammer drill, circular saw, grinder and blower)... long story short I went with Milwaukee and both impacts have the collet flaw But this is what I’ve experienced with both impacts... Owning a Makita, I realised that the drill can handle falls, even off a roof, although the drill itself falls apart. The screws that held the shell of the drill together would always come loose (this could have been a manufacturer flaw), but I could remember having to tighten up the screws on my drill at least 4 times. Another thing I quickly picked up was that the rubber components on the Makita would break off, especially if you had a impact holster on your tool belt. Besides that the Makita impact was comparatively lighter than the Milwaukee, more compact (as this video states) and overall sat well in hand. It just felt right. when lending it to my coworkers, who use other brands, they would always comment on how neat the Makita impact is. Moving on to the Milwaukee. I have only had 2 weeks of ownership over this impact. However this was enough on site time to understand that this impact drill has more power and durability. This outweighed it being the heavier option. First day using this drill, installing a solar system, I dropped my drill off the roof onto pavers, it came down with some speed too. I was very impressed with how it handled the fall. I could barely see any marks and it still looked brand new. The biggest thing that separates both is Milwaukee’s impact drivers ability to undo tight screws/bolts that my tradesmen Makita DRILL DRIVER couldn’t loosen. In conclusion I would say that both drills are great and worth buying, but if you want to avoid situations where you can’t undo some screws/bolts, which could be a hindrance, by lengthening your day, go with Milwaukee. At the end of the day there is no right or wrong answer. (I’ll update my experience with my Milwaukee impact driver if you guys found this useful)

Thanks Vince -- excellent video, and you what you're hitting on is, I think, a critical point for tool evaluation in general. Manufacturers can jack up a particular feature that they know drives sales - but wind up neglecting others that are at least as important but maybe not "hot" features that drive sales. In this case - the XDT16 might not have quite as much high end torque as the Milwaukee, but in real world use it's a great tool for many reasons - AND has a fully functional collet that won't accidentally drop a bit. SO important to consider all the features that are part of real life experience in real jobs, not just the ones that grab marketing headlines.
