If the $5500 price tag is too much for entry-level producers, they may want to use a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K instead. Whilst it doesn't offer everything the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 does, for $1600 it is rated for 2.8K 120FPS, 4K 60FPS, and 6K 50FPS (incl. 6K 60FPS Anamorphic); still suitable for VR production and independent Film/TV projects. It also works with many of the URSA's lenses and mounts.

As both a VR enthusiast and a freelance DP I've been heavily looking into going down this rabbit hole for some commercial and music video concepts. I already have a room set up for VR tracking which helps. Does Genlocking use the video signal coming out from the SDI or just the timecode? I have access to a RED Gemini, but use a ZCam E2 (and soon F6) for personal use. It does have a timecode out so, if that's all that is needed, I will do some testing and let you know if you can add those cameras to your list. I picked the F6 over the Ursa Mini Pro G2 because I am intrigued by large format and have loved using the cheaper ZCam E2 for the past year. Hoping the F6 is able to Genlock though because that could change that decision. Love this series. Appreciate you bringing us along with you in the process.

Thank you very much for putting up these stuffs !! BTW, one question. Do good does the vive tracker does in terms of moving around with the camera ? In my knowledge, trackers like motion capture does require fine tweaking and are not 100% accurate . If that's the case with vive tracker, won't there be miss matching ?
@anscia4 жыл бұрын
Are you considering the difference in movement between the vive and the sensor when tilting? Because, and I might be wrong, if the vive is positioned higher than the sensor, aren’t you risking a difference in movement when tilting? Doesn’t the vive revolve around a greater arc than the sensor? Doesn’t that cause a difference in the parallax? Btw, you’re doing something really special, that’s amazing
@CinematographyDatabase4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know the prevailing knowledge on best practice for placement or the offset in UE4. I can ask some people who would know. I’m just hacking stuff together.

@@CinematographyDatabase if the software cant account for the parallax and it cant be calculated on the fly, you have to put the vive as close as possible to the sensor/optical center, think of a scope on a rifle, if it's real close to target, if wont be accurate, if youre super far away, the parallax(?)/difference is negligible/aligned. Right now the scope is on your head and you're shooting the rifle from the hip....and the target is the wall in front of you so the virtual parallax cant match the live action video. (Please anyone feel free to correct me, i literally have no idea about any of this, lets get the ball rolling)
@CinematographyDatabase4 жыл бұрын
I use a basic transform offset in UE4 and if my vector math is correct it perfectly corrects for the real world physical offset. Like I mention in the video, that is just the first step. The virtual camera doesn’t go at the sensor plane like most people assume.

great videos matt! I think the tracker should be closer to your lens to be more accurate. isnt it possible to record both layers (incamera and UE4) separately and stitch it together in the post later? so you have more options on keying, grading and focus. or is it about to do it live?

Hey Matt, I see the vive is mounted on an arm with Arri locating pins. Do the pins match up with the vive index hole so it won't rotate? I still have some problems with the vive getting bumped and rotating. I proposed a solid mount with index pins to Smallrig Dreamrig. Besides stopping rotation you could tear down the camera rig and put it back together without re-calibrating, it would line up the same every time. If you think that's a good idea please support the idea in Smallrig's Dreamrig Facebook.

@@CinematographyDatabase a bubble level is a great idea for making sure a VIVE on a ballhead or arm is flat relative to the floor! Or relative to the camera if you level the camera first. I think I have one that will fit on the power switch of the tracker, if that's level. If not I suppose you could stick the tracker and level on a plate. Unfortunately doesn't deal with rotation. @@CinematographyDatabase Really awesome stuff man but I believe you should mount the Vive Tracker closer to the sensor of the camera, at least vertically. The tracker's movements are not 1:1 with the sensor and therefore you're having a strange "trolley/glide" effect instead of just a simple "pan" effect when you rotate the camera. The "talent" is correct but the Unreal footage glides left to right because the Vive tracker's position moves left to right. I believe that by mounting the Vive Tracker directly above the sensor then the offset you dialed in should be more accurate during panning shots. As long as you don't have too many tilting shots it shouldn't get weird.

From my knowledge and the Ursa's I've worked with, it's maximum possible ISO is 800... Not ideal at all. Even then, in low light, 800 ISO produces a looooot of noise. Combined with the absurd weight of the camera, there's many more cameras that are 100x more versatile, lighter, better sensor, better image quality, for about the same price if not cheaper. Edit: Don't get me wrong, it's a good camera capable of many things, just don't know if it's the MAIN camera companies should go for.
