Great video. Would have liked to see discussion around gymbals like the DJI OM-5 and DJ OM-6 though as these try and force you down the DJI MImo app path, which you haven't covered. I've been using Filmic Pro Legacy (refuesd to pay for the switch to the monthly subscription model) and it supports the OM-5 although it took them a year to cover it and it looked like the OM-6 was going to take even longer. I like the look of BlackMagic but I have an iPhone Pro 13 not the 15 and I'm guessing it won't support th OM-5 gymbal either so guess I just have to stick with the older apps I have?

Cool, thanks for this! What if one wants to adjust the input volume? I may be buying some (inexpensive) wireless lav mics. But if the talent is yelling, for instance, the audio would distort.
@rockrecordreport71362 ай бұрын
I'm using a Shure usb mic that has it's own level settings (app) and has proven to be exceptional at handling loud bursts of sound and being sensitive at getting the "pin drop" details. That is app where I get the manual controls. I would expect other brands of mics will also offer the separate / manual level controls. The only issue is that I set up to record at 24/48kHz audio (in Shure app) and my iPhone (in native camera operation) down samples that to 16/44.1kHz in the final output video file. I needed to use FilmicPro app I have in order to retain the 24/48khz bit depth/rate. Perhaps newer iPhones will record audio at 24/48Khz natively? I'm still with iPhone 12Pro Max. For users with newer phones(?), or/and of course Blackmagic or Final Cut Camera I'd expect there is 24/48Khz audio recording no problem, and some manual audio controls. Manual audio levels is where things become much more professional imo, along with ProRes and Log, and the faster file output with USB-3. I need to make the jump to an iPhone 15 now that the 16 is rolling out. I'm always (for better or worse) staying behind the latest thing, and it has worked out ok for me.

You may not have tried the Iphone 16 pro max yet as I know it is not officially released, but I was wondering what your thoughts are on a Gimbal for it. I have heard you say that filming in the middle of the day is terrible light and most of my projects take place outside, or in my workshop which is at least undercover, but outside …so I may be committing a KZbin crime (us Australians like sunset and sundown…similar to the kangaroos you can accidentally hit on country roads at those exact times of day). So I won’t be having a studio, except for sometimes feeling in my converted garage out the back. I am a complete novice and did get the DJI Osmo Mobile 6, but it really does not love my Iphone 15 Pro Max and it took about 45 minutes to seat the Magnetic Mobile Phone Clamp on first try, with and without the cover. Admittedly, I had never even owned a selfie stick before and only learnt what a GImbal was, but I'm really good with tools, putting things together (yes, even Ikea furniture) so it was really annoying. Would love your thoughts. Not sure if you might cover it in your course. I'm yet to start!!! regards Victoria

Great overview of the camera apps with details about their differences. It's been difficult to distill with a comparison like this. I'd love to know a bit more about the photo features of the Moment app. For example, does it allow bracketing that people might use when doing Real Estate photos? Regarding Final Cut Camera is there any app on the iPad Pro that will allow you to just use it as a camera monitor? I don't want to subscribe to FCP iPad just for that as I don't anticipate the need for Multicam and don't edit on my iPad (circa 2018 no less so FCP isn't viable)?

So is it really about all over for Filmic Pro? I have the legacy purchase so I don't have to pay to subscribe. But it looks like there are so many new features coming to video apps for iPhones that Filmic Pro might be a moot point about now, or very soon. Their pending fall might not be exaggerated.
@MrPaulXavier2 ай бұрын
I definitely prefer Blackmagic and I also have the legacy version of filmic… I think they really just ruined it for themselves when they went subscription for new people
@rockrecordreport71362 ай бұрын
@@MrPaulXavier Yes true everyone hated that. But the issue I was raising is that the Filmic Pro feature set might be failing to keep up - especially considering the points in your video on these late developments of these other options. I mentioned in another comment that Filmic does not mess with my 24/48khz sampling rate (selected in Shure app) where iPhone's native video camera does and will not record at the setting I'd selected. Maybe newer iPhones dropped that audio limitation. So on my 12 Pro Max, Filmic Pro still has one good use for me if audio (especially in post) is important on the project.

Also, who in the world uses a green or magenta filter over their videos? That is not common at all. Most people who use these apps don’t use filters at all. They shoot in apple pro-res log
@MrPaulXavier4 ай бұрын
No one uses a filter that purposely does that, low quality filters like ND or Polarizers cast green or magenta tints due to the low quality glass. It’s not desired so the tint control helps.
@TheLinesEnd4 ай бұрын
@@MrPaulXavier that’s why you buy quality glass. No way you can expect great results out of a 20 dollar filter. Phones especially need good glass for their filters or not only will they have color casts but they will have bad flaring and it will make the image very soft

@@MrPaulXavier but I agree, most people will buy cheap filters if they buy them at all for their phones. I shoot on an a7iv so I already know the need for quality glass on your filters

Haha I know it’s important to buy good filters. This is for the people who didn’t and now need help fixing it. Shooting in log also doesn’t solve the exposure issue that comes from filming outdoors. An ND filter would still be necessary no matter what picture profile.
