Thanks for the video, Paolo. I have to say, coffee culture has come a LONG way in Japan since I first moved here 20 years ago. Coffee shops back then were either dark, dingy places where old men sat and smoked or overly-ornate, flowery places serving expensive coffee in tiny cups. Now there’s this whole coffee-shop ecosystem and we can get decent coffee anywhere - even the convenient stores serve pretty good drip coffee now.

Hi Paolo and Maiko! Thank you very much for all of your videos. They were very helpful when my daughter and I went to Japan in 2019. I thought I'd put out there a mistake we made while we were grabbing a cup of coffee one morning. I think it was near the outside door of a department store, but it was a coffee shop next to a pastry shop. There were tables all around. To our American eyes it looked like a shared space where a coffee shop and pastry shop allow customers to enjoy both in a common area. So we grabbed a pastry, took a couple of steps over to the coffee shop to get our drink and sat down at a table to enjoy both. The coffee shop politely told us we were in their area and couldn't eat our pastry there. C'est la vie! We went outside and found a place to semi-cop a squat and enjoyed our quick meal.
