I can confirm this! I work somewhere I'd rather not say, and I had to work the counter 8 hrs a day. Hated the living shit out of it. People get on your nerves with their stupidity, mistakes, and lack of consideration for you and others. Long story short, I transferred somewhere else where I come in at 4am SPECIFICALLY to work the back and not the counter. Even then, I sometimes get asked to work the counter, but I avoid it like the plague. Most people are super nice and thankful (I think it's also because of the region I work in is known for having nicer people) but one bad customer can completely and utterly RUIN your day.

Retail Pharmacy Technician can suck just as much. They have to deal with some of the worst people in the general public that assume both the Technician and Pharmacist are causing issues that arise when filling/refilling the prescription. When they are not able to just swoop in and pick up their medication, they go 0-100 so quick and take it out on the person right in front of them (Pharmacist or Technician). Pharmacy Tech at a calmer environment like a hospital would be better. Where the hell is my medication! They said they definitely sent it here! It says I have more refills than that! There's nothing wrong with my insurance, that's bullshit! Do you even know what you're doing! Call my Dr. and Fix it!

I worked retail for 13 years (ominous I know) and all it did was make me see the world as a realist and the reality is most if not all humans are broken and demented people who either hide their pain with humour or take it out on people they believe are below them. And usually the most sadistic people work in upper management in all jobs not just retail.

I worked at Walmart nearly five years. I noticed it changing me, I was really starting to hate people. Not just customers but coworkers, too. Especially managers. Walmart managers truly are the worst. Anyway, I got a job at a small hotel, quit Walmart, and wow am I glad I did. You still deal with some shitty people occasionally but it’s nowhere near the level of what you deal with at Walmart. Since the hotel is small and I work evenings I’m the only staff on duty when I’m there. I call the shots, I run the place, it’s great. For anyone looking to leave retail going to hotel work is a great alternative!

I had to quit there fast because they wanted me to do my training during my lunch break (off the clock), and too many other illegal things. I know my rights, but I guess they get away with it a lot! Plus I worked in grocery and had full blown flu and strep throat, yet dry grocery isn't allowed to take sick days, only produce and meat department. Sorry all the people I infected coughing all over your stuff! I was only there 3 weeks, so I'm sure I only saw the surface of how bad it is there. I was hoping for an overnight job at a hotel too, front desk or night auditor, something like that. I know this is a late response, but I used to work at a smaller hotel chain overnights and that was WORSE than my retail experience, as much as I hated that job. Running the hotel front desk by myself for 8 hours a night, you really see some crazy shit. A PTSD freakout, flooding, a couple having sex in the poolroom after hours, drunken welder workers who stay up late and party, dog crap and trash in the conference room, homeless ladies wandering the halls all night for half a year, calling cops on one of them by mistake, etc. I eventually couldn't take it anymore after 3 years. God bless the hospitality and retail workers though. Just don't make it a lifelong career. For your mental health's sake.

I can second this! I was a sales associate at Macy's, and as an introvert, my favorite part was being able to work from the stockroom doing online orders. It's mainly busiest during Christmas. I could tune out customers, I just went around the store and grabbed things from my list off the shelf, then the backroom processes it for shipment. Merchandising there is good too, you set up signs and make displays look pretty, most of it's done before the store opens. The downside is the pay. In sales, I got a % commission, I don't think the people off the salesfloor get that. So $9/hour 😅

Drive a truck. I average $800-$1000 a week, hitting about $500 on my lowest week and $1800 on my best week. I also have full benefits. Not to brag, I just know money talks, so I wanted to open with that. I'm 26 and dropped out of college...3 times. I love my job. I go out on the road at the beginning of the week and come back for the weekend, usually driving 5 or 6 days a week and then most of the time getting 2 days off (in a row) before hitting the road again. Legally, I am required to take a 10 hour break between shifts, and get at least a 30 minute break in every 8 hour period. There's a computer on the truck that keeps up with all of this time, so it can't be cheated and I get EVERY break I'm owed without question. This is a legal requirement that carries a heavy penalty for both me and my company if I try to violate it. I never have to interact with anyone. I mean when I stop to take a break I may say hi to someone in a truck stop, and any time I deliver a load (which is usually about once a day) I'll have to talk to the person at the desk so they can tell me where to put the trailer and whatnot, but that's it. I don't even see my manager. I met him once, and beyond that, we just communicate via the truck's computer and sometimes on the phone. So no one's ever breathing down my neck either. Basically, as long as I can make every load on time, I don't have to talk to anyone at all. All my load assignments come over the computer. If I'm ever too tired to drive or the weather is too dangerous, all I have to do is communicate that in message form over the computer and legally there's nothing they can do about it. I work for a good company anyway, so they don't question me on these kinds of things. Trucks are surprisingly difficult to handle and backing up a trailer is basically a fucking art form, but once you get good at all of it and get in your groove, it's usually a pretty easy job. The only people I've ever met that didn't like truck driving were people that were either bad at it, or they needed to be home more often. Fanta, you live in Arizona, right? I've been there. I've been everywhere, thanks to this job. You can live anywhere and do this job, as well. First company I worked for was a company in Salt Lake City, Utah... And I live in Tennessee. If you want to eliminate your home bills altogether, you can...you can straight-up live in your truck and save all that money. I don't recommend that, but you can. It's nice to have somewhere to retreat to after work, but you do you. Also, it's a myth that automation is just going to drive truckers out of their jobs. It's not backed by any actual facts. The industry is actually short like 50,000 drivers right now and that number is supposed to double within the next couple of years. If automation ever replaces actual drivers, I seriously bet I will be retired before that ever happens. This is a subject I'm happy to explain more in depth or debate anyone on who's interested. With the shortage, it's a driver's market as far as getting jobs is concerned. Companies will trip all over themselves to hire anyone with a CDL as long as you have a good record. Drive a truck.

Having worked in a pharmacy before I can tell you that prescription customers are the WORST customers there are, they are basically legal drug addicts screaming for their narcotics and get mad when there are too many state regulations to where they can't have it right away. (Most states require a waiting period on narcotics, people got mad every day over that). And due to today's political climate everyone thinks they're entitled to free drugs, I've had a customer get mad and throw a fit and complain to corporate because they had a LITERAL 1 dollar co-pay, one dollar! They didn't want to pay the one dollar they wanted it free! On a CII Drug! And most of them were too stupid to understand that as a pharmacy we are NOT the insurance agency and we are NOT the government. You'd be amazed how many people thought that a retail pharmacy was a government ran place like a hospital and so many people thought that we were the insurance agencies too when we have zero control over any of that. If the insurance says hey your co-pay is 1 dollar, your co-pay is 1 dollar. As a pharmacy tech we have 0 control over what the insurance expects from you and what you have legally agreed upon paying for. I'd rather work as a cashier at a grocery store than in a pharmacy ever again.

Great list! I was in security for a little while; all I can say is be careful who you work for. Some of the larger security companies will throw you around like the body you are to them since they're constantly stretched thin on employees. Also, at least in NH, there is a two month academy to become a corrections officer, so I'd recommend checking your state's hiring process if you're seriously considering that.

My night consists of watching cameras in a dorm full of sleeping students and occasionally letting in/out the late night student making a Walmart trip or whatever. My office also doesn't have cameras and since my work desktop has three monitors I normally bring a console with me and literally get paid to play video games all night. Granted I could find a higher paying job but for what it is and what I end up doing it's a good gig.

Granted I'm one of 2 guys left in the office and the other.....as I said....is a dentist lol. Also........I was a Pharm Tech in highschool. And you definitely deal with customers. Your sole job isnt putting pills in a bottle. You're also ringing patients up for their medication.....and if their medicine isnt ready...or it wasnt filled because they messed up. If they have to WAIT AT ALL..... they are coming for you. They are as nasty if not nastier than retail customers . Seriously, I was stressed. I'd work in the clinic before open with the metal blinds down and as opening got close you could hear the customers outside gathering and getting ready. Guitar Center is considered retail, and I have met people that hate the job and don't see it any different than any other retail job, but I love it. Sure there are plenty of assholes, customers and employees, but when you genuinely have a passion for music, Guitar center is awesome. I can always deal with the corporate bullshit and customers because I just look around me and I am in paradise. I get to learn something new about music and tech every day and build connections with other musicians. Maybe the feeling will wear off, but I have been there for over a year and find it much more fulfilling than any other retail or food service job I've ever had. You are actually given some authority to negotiate with customers and your employers are generally understanding folk and they offer good insurance benefits for full timers. I also get to be more hands on and personal with customers instead of just standing at the register all day or pointing at things, and am not forced to stay in a certain department all day. I admit the way they calculate commission is a little underwhelming, but you are still mostly rewarded for your hard work.

Here's just a few maybe that can help. I know these are not options for people with certain restrictions or in certain areas, but JUST for getting out of retail's sake: -Local gov't or school job. Custodial/reception/bus dispatch/driver/meal prep. Not glamorous, but look specifically for schools and government. They usually pay a living wage. I interviewed for a Starbucks job that paid over 15 an hour, specifically because it was on a college campus. (this is decent pay for food/bev in Wisconsin). -Form processer for 3rd party benefits administration/data entry: worked this. It was a shitshow but I actually enjoyed it because it was so poorly run. So the standards were just to show up. Sat in a cubicle and tried to make sense of bad faxes and if I couldn't, I would reject it and someone else would have to deal with getting better papers. -Any type of entry-level hospital/clinic job. A simple one would be for backroom, transport, or tool sterilization. -Search the local area for research institutes and/or labs. They need people to process/maintain equipment and handle/process specimen. -Transport driver for medical supplies/for a small gig pharmacy. There are places that just deliver meds to people's homes. -Moving companies, especially in a college town. Look to see if tips are common. -Copper cable splicer and/or field technician - if it says specific electrical work experience is needed, ignore that part. Apply anyway and just do a couple read througha on ohm's law, spit out some terms, and a cable/telecom company MAY give you a shot. These guys are always needed (I work in a Network Operations Center). -Also please check for any local trades unions in your area. Even if you have zero experience, if they are hiring, give it a try. We are so depserately in need for tradespeople all over the country. There are absolutely exceptions where they will take you in if you show a passion for wanting to learn.

In our downtime, basically if you got finished with all of the days tasks early youd get in trouble for standing around, or youd be told to do tomorrow's tasks so youd basically get punished. I just started working at Valvoline and I love my job, during any downtime we're free to do whatever we want as long as the store is relatively clean.

As far as cruelty is concerned, the Harbor Freight Tool store I worked for is the worst: The managers stole money from the registers and blamed the workers for it, they practiced favoritism, they fought with the customers, they denied breaks and lunches to the employees, they threatened employees, they shouted at workers, they allowed a worker to breast feed her baby in the back work room, they refused to give raises etc. A union is definitely needed obviously.

It's going to now push your route towards 12 or 13 hours. You have to buy your own chargers for the phones they give you because the battery is horrible. There's no finishing early and getting paid the rest of the day. If you finish early, they make you take more deliveries. Oh, and there's no bathrooms, so get used to pissing in bottles. Avoid the aviation industry if you can. if you wanna be a aircraft mechanic the liability is similar to someone in the medical field (surgeon, cardiologist) ie in the aviation if you leave a single tool on site ie on the taxiway your career is over for good.($50,000 in education gone down the drain) if you mess up you be doing triple time in jail since all your charges will be federal. someone in jail once said i want to do local not federal crimes. so you can see messing up is not an option and the work you did hunts you down the road until you die, the plane gets retired or someone else changes that part.(companies come and go but your signature lasts a lifetime) you also spend as much a 2 hours getting to your site imagine getting to the front desk of an office building at 7:00am and go through a maze that takes two hours to complete with security checkpoints to get to your cubicle. also say you get hired today you will in some horror scenarios wait 2 months before you can even start since you have to get a security badge to make sure you are not going to blow stuff up/do stupid stuff this SIDA Badge process can be worse than the DMV since you have to do it every time you switch jobs that time waiting for that access to work is unpaid time you dont get paid back. it took me 3 months from the day i applied to get my badge as a cabin cleaner. also going to aviation mechanic school is like studying physics or engineering IT IS HARD AF you will have to kill yourself studying and if you like to have a life well you can kiss that goodbye. you have to Jesus waking on water at the time of study even get a chance of passing the class. i struggled through aviation school before i found out this wasn't for me. you also will working overnights and ALL HOLIDAYS forever also you wont enjoy the summer/holiday season since you will be busy as hell. to quote a aviation mechanic "This is not a 9-5 job, it’s a 24x7 operation with the majority of your career spent working nights AND weekends in every possible combination of weather!" this isn't worth a free first class flight once a year and $50 an hour top pay and $20-$25 bottom/staring pay

Government jobs will require at least a GED in most places but pay entry level workers great wages and usually have insane benefits. The college I worked for started custodians at 18.50 an hour, offered free education to you and your family, and had amazing dental/vision/health insurance which when maxed out cost $44 a month and would extend to 5 dependants at that same $44 a month total. Let's say I got cancer, the cancer insurance kicks in and I don't pay a dime. Heart attack? Nothing except MAYBE a $500 fee. Good dental is $1500 a year usually with a high copay. Mine was 4k a year with no copay for 53 cents a month. I had my wisdom teeth paid for 100% and didn't have to pay a dime. Medications, 100% covered. I want a box a bandaids I go into the doctors office, pick it up and insurance covers it. You got a 10,000 a month prescription? Free. Need glasses? Two eye exams a year and two frames. The only downside is it only covers 400 for frames but all coatings are free. The best part is that insurance is shit compared to my current insurance working for a different government agency.

I enjoyed working in all kinds of weather, and I liked the physical aspect of it. I didn't do much bricklaying, but I did lay flags and erect fencing for out clients. Not many firms were looking for new tradesmen during the crisis, so I had on and off employment working in factories. Working with employment agencies meant that I wasn't guaranteed stable hours and I was often turned away due to over staffing. I then went into retail.

Concert secruity is fun. Well for me it was. I did it here in the Los Angeles area in 1996-2002. I won't recommend it if you're a small body person like yourself Fanta or a female. Most likely the females are put at the front gates checking bags and pat downs. And small guys are checking tickets. This is one job us big guys get the good spots. I worked metal concerts pop concerts and boring concerts. Metal was the best though. Not just because its my kind of music. Your day at work is more active. From breaking up fights, getting into fights and putting out bon fires in the lawn areas of the venue. The company I worked for also did conventions. Including E3. In a way its a free way into E3 and you're getting paid to be there. Down side of working that kind of secruity is that you are on your feet for a very long time. Especially conventions and concert festivals. Most times you're working 12-14 hour days.

Patient Transport at a Hospital Qualifications are minimal. --They pay around $12-$15/hr Full-time or Part-Time (your choice). --They don't ever cut payroll or hours like in retail and give unlimited overtime --Full Incredible Benefits --Unlike Retail you're dealing with better behaved people (patients receiving care are nicer than customers) --You're also dealing with more professional people like Dr., Nurses, etc. instead of your typical inexperienced retail managers (low levels of critical thinking and leadership skills) and employees. --Only downside I can think of is that you have to take dead bodies to the morgue. There is some upward mobility as well as most Patient Transporters move on to become Technicians for the various departments in the hospital like Radiology. Also working in a Hospital looks way better on your Resume than working at some retail store

I've worked in retail or customer service since I was 16 and now that I'm 35, I have arthritis and bone spurs from the the long hours on my feet and repetitive motions. Plus lifting things when you're in a hurry. I'm too young to be falling apart this much. Hotels aren't much different from retail, think of the drunks and demanding people, it's the same kind of job to be honest. Front desk has to put up with angry people all day. Bank tellers, I had a bit more respect doing that, but the pay keeps going down and down. Your customers do treat you a bit nicer though when you are in charge of their money.

Sleep Tech, if you don't mind night shifts. Spend 2ish hours with patients in the evening putting them to bed, 1ish hour in the morning getting them up and out, relax for the other 9 and watch youtube, like I'm currently doing. I even bring my laptop to play games on and everyone is ok with it.
