I'm a huge fan of the "feather and fan" stitch. It's an easy way to create something elegant that looks WAY more complicated than it actually is. Great video! I look forward to watching more. 👍

Thank you! Finally, a younger knitting influencer who knits English style! My Mom taught me how to knit a lifetime ago, and held the yarn as you do. I wasn’t good at it, so I switched to crocheting instead. Have wanted to try knitting again recently. I’ve tried to switch to Continental, but although it makes sense to my eyes and brain, my hands just won’t do it. Your video tutorials are helping me improve.

If you want a good cast on for Old Shell ("feather and fan"), try the Chinese Waitress cast on. It's stretchy enough to conform to the waves that the stitch naturally makes.

Basket weave stitch? I am re-learning to knit after many years. There are several videos on the basket weave stitch, and none of them seem to agree with one another. Plus a few instructions seem very complicated and it's difficult for me to remember and keep track of what I'm doing due to various health issues. I was able to follow your instructions for the seed stitch and am now working on a either a really long scarf or wrap because I'm not really ready to tackle anything more complicated than that until I master a few basic knitting stitches.

Feather and Fan is actually a different knitting stitch pattern to old shale. The confusion comes because in America, they tend to knit Feather and Fan stitch under the name "Old Shale". However there's a specific Ols Shale stitch that originated from the UK

Thank you for this very interesting summary of various combinations of "knit" and "purl". I only want to point out a small error in language. The verb "to lay" is transitive, e.g. "My hen lays eggs in the morning." The verb "to lie" is intransitive and describes a state of being, e.g. "My hen lies down to rest after laying eggs." A swatch of seed stitch, for example, "lies" flat; it does not "lay" flat. You are not the only one...this is now a very common error in English. I have watched many KZbin videos on knitting and all the KZbinrs that I have watched make the same mistake. The content is great and much appreciated.

I had a conversation with my cousin; who has knitted for over 20 years and she says there’s no such thing as a knit stitch. It’s all knit and purl ! Yet; I keep seeing videos like yours that says that there are different stitches, even though even you repeat knit and purl, when you’re talking about the various stitches so I’m just a little confused being a total newbie. Yet the test squares look different; so therefore there are different stitches!!! Uggh…help! I have ASD so please help me not go crazy over this; even if both are correct - that will allow my brain to relax.
