Northern Water Snakes while not venomous are known to be very aggressive when handled and will bite repeated and forcibly. Watch how this particular Nerodia sipedon responds to me! This snake non-venomous snake was discovered laying in the sun on the top step of a bridge on the blue-blazed Andy Layne trail, a well-known connector to the Appalachian Trail near scenic Tinker Cliffs.

I live in NH, and my back door opens up to the woods, I love living close to nature 😊 I recently found a couple of Northern RedBack salamanders. But I'm always looking for snakes. A few years ago, a garter snake gave birth under my deck, and at least 50 babies were coming through the slats on my deck! It was so cool watching them make their way into the woods. I was so lucky to have seen them. They were gone within 20 minutes! I recently found your channel and have been loving it! Keep up the great work!

skyediona1781: I live along a game trail in the outskirts of suburbia. The trail is used primarily by Deer and Turkey, but probably other things such as Raccoon, Fox, Coyotes. Having this close location to animals is fantastic, just like what you have.

@dannyo3317 that's awesome!! I also see deer in the early am or dusk all the time! I've also seen coyotes, fox, lynx, bear, and once we had a HUGE porcupine walking around the neighborhood! I REALLY need to set up a trail cam, I'd probably see so much more!

Thanks so much for educating people about snakes, saving many of them from being killed. I grew up swimming in the crick near our house, and we would see water snakes in the water, but they never harmed us. I grew up protecting snakes to keep my brothers from killing them. I don't think any of them should be killed, even the poisonous ones.

We have to be careful in western Kentucky with snakes near water. It is best to just avoid them altogether. The banded water snake can have colors and patterns very close to both copperhead and cottonmouth. And, you are correct about the water snakes' aggressive behavior. Thanks for sharing.

Ive seen many northern water snakes. Even down in the Niagara Gorge. The young ones have very nice coloring. As they get larger they usually become much more drab in color.

So many people here in southwest michigan that kill every snake they see. They all have an irrational fear, and act like little girls climbing the walls to get away, actually doing themselves and their property more harm than the little hognose ever would have. I actually am shocked at the amount of grown men, that I used to respect, with such a ridiculous fear. It's a sign of weakness, like smoking.

Hey Frank! I don't know how to contact you other than leaving a comment but I have a question for you. I just moved into a house about 3 weeks ago, and I've found maybe 6 or 7 beetles that I'm 99% sure are darkling beetles but here's the problem. Every one has been dead or dying. All the spiders and other insects I've encountered (which isn't many) have been healthy and active. There's no poison, or extreme temperatures. So why are these beetles dying? And more importantly, what can I do about it? It's sad to keep finding them dead and dying, and a little creepy to have to keep disposing of the bodies.
@natureatyourdoor
@natureatyourdoor Ай бұрын
That is very curious my friend, I have no idea. Accept some of those beetles are multi generational and maybe a life cycle turnover .

Is it right that deep sounds do scare snakes? Can you make a video episode about sound and snake behavior? I assume that snakes flee if they hear a deep voice. Survival tactics in snake environments. If there are high "Mouse voices" then snakes come for a prey?
@natureatyourdoor

Snakes are sensitive to vibrations in the ground. They often have poor eyesight too. They have NO external ears so their "hearing" would be very limited. Probably more sensitive to low sounds/vibrations. They find prey using "taste" ...collecting molecules on end of tongue

The only thing I don’t like about water snakes is that they kill tons of other creek life around them. Minnows, frogs, etc. They also get inside my minnow traps and get stuck and end up dying.

Snakes always come for a prey to see if the victim is weak? If the victim is weak and shows fear or no signs of life in certain smells then she thinks that she can poison the victim?
