I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzbin.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

Here's how I started. Four years ago, I wanted to get some exercise and make some extra money while doing it. My first season, I stuffed a push mower in the trunk of my car, bought an Echo Pro-Attachment trimmer and edger combo, and an Echo hand-held blower. Well, I got plenty of exercise! I got so many customers that I could barely keep up physically. So, my second season, I hired my son, bought a 5x10 trailer, a Grasshopper zero-turn mower, and an extra trimmer. We soon learned how to edge well with the trimmer, so we no longer use the edger attachment. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't change a thing.

Bogie I'm just starting out, what is a good mower & trimmer to start with? I have no clue
@Bogie6588
@Bogie6588 4 жыл бұрын
@@007dreday1 ....This is long, but it’s full of things I’ve learned along the way. I recommend starting with a good zero-turn mower. Don’t worry about getting enough business to justify it. You will get plenty of business, because many people are simply too busy or lazy to cut their own grass. I have a 48” Grasshopper 124V zero-turn, and it’s been great. Any of the major brands will be good. I would certainly get a commercial grade machine though. In other words, don’t buy a zero-turn from the big box stores. THIS IS THE KEY….find a well-established lawn equipment dealer in your area and buy from them. You will need follow up service/repairs eventually, so you need to make sure your dealer is available and able to do the work with a fast turnaround. I made the mistake of buying from a guy who does great work but has a terrible turnaround for service and repairs (3+ weeks!). You can’t run a business like that! You will not go wrong with the lower-end commercial models of brands like Scag, Exmark, Hustler, Husqvarna, Gravely, Toro, Walker, etc. They all make excellent machines. I do prefer the smaller 48” decks, simply because most of my properties are residential and have lots of obstacles. The smaller footprint allows for more maneuverability and a little less trimming, which is the more time consuming part of most residential jobs. I’ve done the math. The typical property that I mow has less than 0.25 acre of actual grass. With the larger decks, you will save less than 2 minutes, while struggling more to maneuver, and trimming a little more. It’s not worth it to me. Now, the age-old question is…will you side-discharge, mulch, or bag. Honestly, I’ve used a bagging system. It leaves a little cleaner look and is great to have when cleaning up leaves, however, it adds bulk to your footprint and often clogs when the grass is wet with dew. Looking back, I would primarily use side-discharge, and here’s why. A bagging system can make a lawn look good, even if it hasn’t been cut in 3 weeks, and customers catch on to that. Healthy lawns and profitable lawn care businesses require more frequent mowing. If the customer doesn’t like large amounts of grass clippings on their lawn, then suggest to them that they let you mow more frequently. As far as trimmers and blowers, I have used only Echo products and they have never let me down…not even once. I started with the Echo PAS (Professional Attachment Series) 225. I got the combo that includes the trimmer head and blade-edger head. www.echo-usa.com/Products/Pro-Attachment-Series/PAS-225VP We have the hedge trimmer and brush-cutter attachments as well, which have come in handy a few times, but are not necessary when starting out. (People may laugh at me, but I use an EGO 56V cordless hedge trimmer. It cuts well enough for my needs and is much lighter than the gas trimmers, but I’m sure Echo makes some great hedge trimmers.) We do use the blade-edger attachment for our trimmer for new properties that have been neglected and are overgrown, but all the other times we edge by turning the trimmer sideways (lots of how-to videos on KZbin). It’s fast and doesn’t require going back to the trailer for another piece of equipment. Since we rarely use the attachments, my next trimmer will be an Echo SRM-2620. It has a little more power, which I’ve needed on some rare occasions, but it’s definitely not necessary for just starting out. Also, we love our Edgit Pro trimmer head attachments. It helps make edging with the trimmer more precise. And, it allows us to position the trimmer head under bushes and other objects to trim without damaging them. Check it out. edgit.com/products/edgit-pro For a blower, we started with the Echo PB-2520 and still use it when we need to blow off high things like roofs, gutters, etc. However, for everything else, we use the Echo PB-580T. Another idea…if you don’t have a chain saw, then get one. We have the Echo CS-352. It’s a real money-maker for small to medium trees. We usually don’t try to tackle anything over about 12”-15” in diameter or that requires climbing or dealing with power lines, etc. But, it’s definitely a money-maker. So, all you need to start out is a good, low-end commercial-grade zero-turn mower, the Echo PAS-225VP combo, one of the Echo blowers mentioned above, a hedge trimmer, and you’re ready for almost anything. And lastly, measure your own property or a friend’s and have several local lawn care services give you estimates. This will help you get an idea what the market rates are in your area. You can measure properties using Google Maps (there are some videos for this as well). And, let me know if you want some price-calculating ideas. I have some formulated spreadsheets I created to take some of the guesswork out of pricing jobs. I can email them to you. Good luck!

My set up is a 5.5x10 trailer, a toro mx5025 zero turn, echo pb755st backpack and a cheap $100 homelite trimmer. I'm just starting out and only have one account so far. I work a full time job as an equipment operator so I'm limited to mowing only on weekends. I'm hoping one day I'll be able to gather up enough clientele to go out and work for myself full time with a couple of my own employees.

I have a hustler raptor SD, a stihl fs91 and fs131 and a ryobi 40v blower. I mow 60 yards each month. In 2 seasons I put 270h on my hustler. It has worked well for a $4k, high end residential mower. But I started with a $200 troy bilt rider that I repaired, pushed up ramps into my s10 and repaired at least every other weekend to keep it going. For a part time lawn care biz, many high end residential mowers can do well as they will have heavy-duty fabricated decks, serviceable hydros, kawasaki engines.

A mower doesn't make the business. Showing up on time, treating the customer right does. Customers don't care if you have a push mower or a $12,000 zero turn they just want what they pay for.

Well considering I’ve been cutting yards with a push mower for two years now on the side, I’d totally agree. When you get the money, upgrade. Until then, get a self propelled push mower from toro for $300-400. I just recently upgraded to a zero turn. When you’re starting out you don’t have enough clients to actually need a zero turn anyways.

i run a home owner 48in zero turn and do 14 yards. for residential yards on flat ground it does just fine. I just change the transmission fluid once a year and never had a problem with it. i put about 100 hours a year on it and its been dead reliable however i plan on getting a nicer one in a few years. im gonna run this one to 600-700 hours and then sell it and get a commercial one. i run a stihl km91r for heavy weeds and a pole saw and a husqvarna 525l trimmer for daily use because its so light. For a blower i just use a cheap stihl bg50 to blow grass off of sidewalks and driveways.

My setup is a 5x8 trailer (regret buying such a small one but oh well I’ll probably upgrade next fall) with a 48 husq zero turn and a 21” push mower. I have like 3 inches to spare as long as the push mower is up against the front trailer bar and the zero buts up against it. But the setup is just right. It’s just enough space. I throw my gas cans, string trimmer and blower in the truck bed. No biggie for me. I could honestly fit them on the trailer deck too but there’s no good reason considering I don’t bag anything and why risk something small and light falling off when the truck bed is empty

Correction. You can use zero turns in a residential setting. It depends on where you are. Here in Western Kentucky. One guy I know uses a 61 inch Skag on 1/3 acre yards and takes him 12 minutes on average to cut. Most companies do the same thing. So don’t go around saying you can’t. Push mowers don’t always cut better either. Before getting my zero turn. I used a pusher on a spot just big enough for my dog to have a roaming area. It looked like ass. I bagged it too. If the ground is uneven. That has a lot to do with it too. A zero turn can be much smoother with the cut.

The biggest lighbulb moment I had was to have at leat 2 of everything that you use every day. I've had a few occasions whare I could not work because of equipment failures. So I decided never to be in that boat again and over time started to double up. So I have 1 ride on 2 walk behind mowers and 3 strimmers. 2 with string and one with a brush blade but they can all swap and change heads.

A little tip for all you guys. Stay away from ethanol fuel. Find a place that sells non-ethanol. I cut out using that junk about 2 years ago and have no carburetor issues. Costs a few cents more but cut out problems.

I started out last spring using a Husqvarna self propelled. In Nov. I found a pretty decent deal on a Toro Timecutter 42. Its a residential model but I think it will do a pretty good job for now. My trimmers and edger are Echo and I got them at Home Depot. Everything except the Timecutter has paid for itself. What’s you opinion on the Timecutter? Thanks for the informative videos and keep them coming.

your riding mower is what makes the bucks for me at least, the other two most important tools on my trailer is my weed eater and blower, i cheap out on push mowers and get the dime a dozen walmart mowers with the simple briggs and straton engine on it and i find em used for 20 bucks and usually need some small carb work is all.... but, that's here.... do not cheap out on your weed eater ive replaced more weed eaters then i can count. i started my buisness on a old ferris three wheeled comercial mower it made the money to eventually buy a newer zero turn your first couple years re invest in tools

Before even buying a mower look at things like gate size. That 48 would not fit through our gates a 36 would not fit. I bought a 34inch cut and it did not fit but the gravely did a nice job. We bought the wright 32 hydro and its a great mower but poor customer service from the wright dealer. So make sure what kind of lawns your going to do. We started out with cheap mowers then went to a snapper 21 inch they were great and we still have them in our trailers. Size matters not all the large mowers are good for the size of the yards you are doing.

What is the best way for a new service to get residential customers

Yeah the speed feed head also saves you TONs of string. You put on 6ft of string and waste a few inches at the very end. With regular heads you use let’s say 1ft of line and have to throw out 7 inches of it. Very wasteful. At work we don’t have speed heads and we use lots of string. And most of the string is thrown away once it gets short.
@andrewyoung4473

Montana White I know! And to get a good cut you have to get new string when it's only a little bit short. With a bumper you just bump!

hey Murph! I just recently started a lawn care business. Get fliers printed up with your business name, personal contact info, and a detail about your business. Leave a blank spot that says "your estimate" and under it hand write the price of what you would charge for that yard. through statistics I average 2 calls per 100 houses. walk them up to the door and place under the mat with a bit of it sticking out. best way in my opinion since nobody likes to pass fliers anymore.

Craigslist is the best thing in the world but it now coast $5 a add which is still worth it! The nextdoor app is like a microcriagslist and it works amazing! They kick me off the app for advertising but I did such a great job for a couple people that months later i'm still getting so many calls that I never even try to dispute why they removed me. But honestly door to door knocking is many the best way! Billion dollor companies have been started door to door, so trust me burn some gas scream at people with ugly lawns out your window and bang on their doors and get you some money!!!!

dude the only time you should ever use a push mower is if the yard your doing is too small for a ridding mower to get in, other then that there is no use for them at all and just don't understand why people have them on there trailers.

@ Sam Thompson...not true. I run a small lawn service, and some customers have large ditches in front of their homes....(and no, using a weedeater to do the whole thing is not feasible)If you know like I do, those are not suitable for zero turns to be used in...Of course, small yards, are more applicable for 21 in push mowers. Everyone has their own setups for their clientele. Why judge what others have? Maybe it suits their needs...at least for me it does.
