Slow-Cooked, Buttery Lens Deliciousness. What’s Your Go-To Lens?

A vintage 50mm f1.7! Stunning for portraits, wide enough to get some run-and-gun street shots, and it's minimum focus distance is close enough to get those beautiful details!

Dennis The Prescott dammmmmmit Dennis, well NOWWWW I’m shoooooping for 100mm lenses, haha thanks homie, LOVE THIS CHANNEL!! Usually I’ve used the Canon 1.4mm for food, but you’ve talked me into a 100mm 🙌🏼❤️👊🏼

150mm PL and 300mm PL sometimes on extension tubes to play with the focal plane... Oh yeah + 20K's of light to make it work at that those lengths.

My walk-around and environmental portrait lens is a 24-105mm Sigma Art lens. But my go-to food and headshot lens is this Canon 100mm L macro. Are you using it on the top-down shots that show a lot of food, and if so, do you have a BTS photo of you at work with it? I'm curious as to how high you need to be to fit all that into a 100mm.
@Lightorangebean6 жыл бұрын
I use canon 50mm 1.8 for years and it did a fantastic job. Recently, after watching Peter McKinnon's product shots video and the video he did for you (the making pizza one), I went to my local camera store and luckily, they have a used 100mm macro. It's in a great shape and price!!!! So I bought it and love it ever since.

I couldn't put my finger on why exactly I loved my Canon 24/70mm 2.8 Macro lens, it always delivers with portraits etc. People talk about the 70/200mm 2.8 the 50mm 1.2, the 80mm for weddings the 16/35mm 2.8 but most people seem to skip over the 24/70mm 2.8 macro like it doesn't exist, I have loved it forever and now I know why, Thanks Dennis! I have my first food photo shoot tomorrow for a Menu' here in Villa de Leyva Colombia South America, wish me luck!

That 100mmMacro is a stunning lens. It's always in my bag as a food industry photographer. I team it up with a 24-70 for most of the shoots. There's something about the focal length, when I switch to it, I almost always get a beautiful view point and shot. It's amazing how different it looks from, say, 70mm. When I first started using the 100 Macro I found myself exclaiming something a little rude, but fir amazing reasons. FB is the nick name for it now... (Filthy B***h) And that IS is freakin amazing!! Haven't used it on video yet... Can't wait to give it a go. I also use it for portraits, restaurant details, and I'm going to head out and just shoot with it, just for fun. Get some food related shots I may not usually get, and some cool storytelling. Cheers JT

Thank you Thank you Thank you (Yeah I typed that 3x lol). I've been saying the Canon 100mm macro is THE most underrated L lens out there. If the "ideal" portrait focal length is between 85 - 135mm then why aren't people talking about this guy. I've shot tack sharp portraits and even sports photography with this lens. It's fast, sharp, light and affordable (in comparison with other L lenses). The fact that this lens can pull double duty as macro and portrait lens makes it truly amazing. I rarely hear anyone praise it for anything other than macro so this was great to watch. Thank you Dennis, I agree 100%. (subscribed-boom!)

Great stuff. There are a lot of good and great macro lenses out there from the major manufacturers, but also from the third-party makers like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. I recently picked up the Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lens specifically for food photography and I'm stunned by how good it is on a full frame body. For a crop sensor body I might stick with my Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro, which of course is also fabulous on a full frame body and can allow more of the scene into the composition.

@DennisThePrescott6 жыл бұрын
Hi! It can be a challenge, honestly (especially if shooting indoors with limited space). If that’s the case, I have several friends who’ve opted for the 60mm macro version. If you plan to shoot full frame down the road though, I’d definitely go for the 100mm, and just try and find that extra room whenever possible.
@Hashoshi46 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply! I do plan to move to full frame so I am going to go for the 100mm; I'll just take some extra space (portraits are easy in that regard) for my product photography.
