The one and only: XF 16-55 2.8. Versatile enough and you can use it for portraits and shooting in low light as well. The one to rule them all :-).

Early last year transitioned from decades with Canon to Fujifilm (first with X-T2 and then an upgrade to the X-H1) . I've made a few 'City Break' trips across Europe since and I generally carry the XF10-24mm and/or XF-16-55mm - I'm getting absolutely brilliant results. Changing to Fujifilm has completely rejuvenated my passion for photography. If I had to take the X-H1 out with one lens it’d have to be the XF-16-55mm. The advantage of f/2.8 and in conjunction with the X-H1 IBIS, is great. 16mm (24mm) is wide enough for most landscape and architecture and at the long end, 55mm (82mm) is great for portraits. A great all-rounder for my travel needs and with it I have captured some stunning images. I’m thinking of buying an X-T30 (as a 2nd body when it is finally in stock), with the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R, to shed a bit of weight for a trip to Italy in May.

Totally! Super happy to hear that a camera should do a couple of things, make people enjoy photograpy and also get results. This clearly has happened for you using Fujifilm which is amazing! I am consifered the 16-55 2.8 at the moment. I use the 18-55 for filming use as its small and lightweight to carry around all day long. Interesting to know your thoughts if you have both of them - the 16-55 looks soooo sharp!

Hi Dill, totally agree with you; Fuji, after years of shooting Nikon, has made me rediscover the pleasure of photography. Shooting with the XT2 now; will probably upgrade to the XT3. Why did you upgrade to the XH1? Because of the IBIS? The XH1 is older, but still a viable alternative for me. Next holiday, I'll bring my trusted 18-55 (or the 18-135, if I buy that one; still undecided) and the 10-24 which I bought couple of months ago.

This is an awesome response. I own both the xh1 and xt3 both have pros but for me the biggrst thing was IBIS for video

@@matthewstorerphotography Thanks, I'll ponder that some more... BTW, not owning the 18-135 (yet) the "you can only keep one lens" question I would answer with the 18-55. I have checked that while I'm travelling, over 80% of my photo's fall in that focal range. It's no match against the 16mm 1.4, but still, an extremely useful lens. And stabilized for video...

100% i would say the 18-135 has a pro of being more zoomed but a downfall of being not as sharp. Both amazing lens for video, travel and all around lens.

I would choose my 18-135 for sure but just as an aside I take two fuji cameras at times one with the 18-55 and the other with the underrated 50-230 wich together gives me an 18-230 range (27-350 approx ) equivalent. No bag no other lenses--just my xt1 and xe2 and those two light weight lenses. Works great with one shoulder strap and regular strap.

Someone once told me that if people check the corner sharpness of your images, then those images are not worth look at anyway. That being said, I use the XF 18-135mm and it's pretty much glued to my camera. Even if it's not perfect at the very wide angle or the very telephoto end, the center sharpness is always excellent and when you keep it between 30mm and 100mm you get good corner shaprness as well, stop it down for even better results. The OIS is superior to anything I've used in the past.

Totally agree. Even on my smallish X-T20 (with grip), it handles fine--and the focal length range (27mm-203mm) is outstanding for us "lazy photographers" who don't like to change lenses every time we see a new shot coming during travel. I'll say that the XC (plastic-bodied) 16-50 is underrated (as is its brother, the 50-230) and excellent for travel because it's so light--but the 18-135 is the one. Even without a gun to my head!
@matthewstorerphotography

I have never used the XC lenses but I could imagine they are great due to being so lightweight. But as you said the 18-135 and also the 18-55 are great lenses for me. Do you have any interest for thr newer 16-80mm?
@richardmancini959

@@matthewstorerphotography Hmm, 16-80 at a constant f/4, nice range with some speed too. If the price is right, it could replace the venerable 18-55 as a great all-around travel lens for many people, with a little more width plus a useful boost at the tele end to 120mm equivalent. But you have a couple of classic lenses already! Since I don't own the 18-55 yet, I would consider the 16-80 if it's not too expensive...
@matthewstorerphotography
@matthewstorerphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is super true. I would love it for a film lens. Big issue for me would be sharpness for price range. I own the 18-55 and 16-55. The kit lens is crazy good for filmimg but nowhere near as sharp. If the 16-80 is fairly sharp it could replace both lenses for me having IS also.

I have the 16-55 my self, and because it's wider and I don't use superzoom that much, I'd go for that one. But if you do like to zoom, the 18-135 just makes sense. But thinking further, if you want to go compact and light, the Panasonic GX9 and 14-140mm also makes a lot of sense, but if you want just one system, not.

Maybe not the greatest travel lens but if I could only have one Fuji lens it would probably be the 16mm f1.4. It is a strangely versatile lens; pseudo macro, ridiculously close focus, unbelievably sharp. It's good for street photos, landscapes, and because of it's close focus, if you don't mind getting in your subject's face, it can actually do a good job at portraits. I love the 18-55. I've traveled with it and the 55-200. That's a great pairing.

Honestly, I would choose the 50mm f1. I would choose that one because it lets in a ton of light, has weather sealing and good subject isolation. Right before Christmas I “discovered” how awesome it is to take photos in dark (and preferably foggy conditions) and the 50mm let’s me get shutter speeds fast enough to freeze cars in pretty dark conditions. Which I can’t with any of the other lenses I have. Other than the Laowa 33mm 0.95 maybe, but that one is weather sealed and it actually does not let in ad much light as the 50mm. So that’s why I would shoes the 50mm. It’s very flexible for a fixed focal length lens.

Hi. I'm just thinking about getting myself such a lens. But the alternative stops me. New Tamron 18-300mm. It would be great to compare them in the range of 18-135. They have a similar price. They have approximately the same aperture in the range of 18-135. But the tamron looks much more interesting. It just has an unrealistically short minimum focus, only 15sm. It has more telerange.

To be completely honest for Fuji lenses these are not the sharpest in the tool shed. Only one? With an x-h1? The 16-55 f2.8 Yes you don't have supertele, but I think I'd loose really more photos with the 18-135. Because of F3.5. Even 2.8 is a compromise.. But at least it isn't so bad.. I don't own it to be onest, I have the 18-55 2.8-4, because my fujifilm body doesn't have OIS. And the 18-55 is cheaper. And I use mainly primes.

Then I will compared all my options - right now I am using the 18-55 but would like to look for upgrade in sharpness soon. What is your thoughts of the 16-55 2.8mm would you use it over the 18-55 if you could?
@wRicky89
@wRicky89 5 жыл бұрын
I won't use it beacuse it's too heavy, and it don't has OIS, and because I use the 18-55 when it isn't too dark. When it's dark I use only primes, better to loose 30 seconds to change lens than using too high iso, and having less sharpness. P.S. An idea of "only one lens" that I'd like is the x100f. 23mm f2, lightweight and poketable, you can have it always with you. To use when you go out without thinking you would need a camera 😊

Very creative and really true best of both worlds, great camera, great lens super small lightweight and portable. Excellent thinking outside the box!!

Hi! Thanks for the video. Currently I have the 35mm F2 with the XT3. Would you recommend the the 18-135 or 16-80 to be my next lens? Been wanting to explore more of macroish and landscape shots.

@matthewstorerphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Mhmm hard question to answer this one, depends how much image sharpness and video plays a role in your photography. If you do video work I would probably stick with the constant f/4 16-80mm, but if just photography the 18-135 is a beautiful lens which I highly recommend! Not as sharp, but has an amazing focal range throughout.

Spot on Mr S. it is my go to lens. Having done years of travel with Panasonic LUMIX LX series cameras with 24 to about 85mm equivalent focal lengths, the 200mm equivalent of the 18 - 135mm provides so much more versatility. I don’t like the continual connotation of “kit lens”. XC lenses are kit lenses and XF lenses are the premium. I cannot fault the imagery of my XF 18 - 55mm or XF 18 - 135mm and both as you say are stabilised. Good advice for newcomers to the fab Fuji X system. Thanks.

Couldnt have said it better myself. I also hate using them or calling them kits lenses. But also tells you all about the quaility of Fuji's lens line up if this is called a kit lens haha. But agree perfect go to or starter lens package. Interested to see the new 16-80mm think I will buy it straight away.

Well, the story begins with the time I had my first camera, it was canon 70d with a 18-135 kit lens. It was a nice combo for the first kit, I took it everywhere without a hesitation. But time went by and I wanted something better, so when I had a chance, I swapped it to 6d and bought a couple of L lenses(24-105 and 70-200). All that to realise that while it's perfect to have in a bag for photo trips, but I'll not take both of those lenses for a climb on Elbrus or for other week long treks. So back I went, bought x-t2 this time and 18-135 as my first lense..I'll probably buy 10-24 when I'll get rid off what I've left from canon. Funny it sounds, but I actually bought crop sensor camera just to be able to use this focal range on one smaller lense instead of 2 big L glasses, which covers just a couple millimeters more. It's far from perfect, but at least I'll have it when I need and it is weather resistant, which I'm very happy about. So I couldn't agree more on your words about it being the best as first lense in the bag. For someone who shoots landscape and is out for a hike or climb or travel a lot anyway. Cheers!

One lens? 23 1.4, or 14 2.8 for travel. Though I'm likely picking up this one soon to put on a second WR body (I have an older X-T1) for a WR versatile kit. I have trips to both Florida and Hawaii coming up and the chance for getting wet from rain or salt water, or dust/sand from wind is high. Still haven't decided if I want 16-80 or 18-135 though... Probably will get the 18-135 though, for more reach to my kit. My longest lens now is the 56mm 1.2. I could have 14 2.8 on one cam and the 18-135 on the other for travel. If I'm in a kayak though, I'd likely only grab the x-t1 and 18-135...not my non WR primes.

Matt, small lens 3.5 to 5.6 (thats a drawback) Would have liked a constant 2.8 but for the cost the G7 and an extra lens plus a small monfretto tripod, spare battery plus tablet can fit in a small cross shoulder man bag so when lm out touring OS no one notices you have the camera gear. Just have to accept the few drawbacks with the MFT gear. Keep up the good work, l see the subscriptions are almost 4500!!! Regards Rob

@@matthewstorerphotography I love the primes. I'm a sucker for them. But changing lenses gets old pretty quick. And my 16-55mm is amazing for studio but the weight is definitely an issue when travelling. I'll see how heavy the 16-80 turns out to be and then I'll be able to decide.

Ahh you have the 16-55mm. Is it super sharp? This are the two lenses I will decide between when it comes to that point. Interesting to hear you will look at the 16-80. Main reason?
@AlreadyTiredOfYou
@AlreadyTiredOfYou 5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewstorerphotography yeah, I use it in studio cause I don't need shallow depth of field in controlled environments... I'd rather have the whole face in focus. The main reason I'll look into the 16-80 is because the 16-55 is too heavy to carry around. And it doesn't have OIS which is a pity. I've looked into the 18-55 but it doesn't have WR which puts me on the fence... But at the same time it's so light... I believe the 16-80 will be the best of all worlds (for travel). I'm really looking forward to testing it.

How is it for primary video shooting? I've just bought the x-h1 and ordered both the 18-55 and the 18-135 as second-hand lenses. Is the 18-55 range of the 135 lens comparable to the 18-55? For primary video shooting its a little soft over 70mm and I was struggling to focus on many occasions zoomed out. Its great for versatile shooting but the 18-55mm is the go to filming lens for me! Its great throughout the whole focal range (some vignetting at 18mm 2.8) but the image stabilizer in both the lenses is great! I will always use the 18-55mm for just video shooting :D Feels great on the X-H1

Got to agree with your general comments Matthew: super zooms are handy if you can only have one lens with you, I've used a couple in the past incl a Tamron 18-270 which I still have, but I've found that even at their sweet spot (f8 or wherever ?) and keeping away from their extremes of focal length, they don't deliver as sharp images as more conventional zooms of say x3 or so. The plus side is, as you say, they are versatile and let you get images that you wouldn't otherwise get unless you were carrying a bag full of other lenses.
