@Spacewolf Blackmane Yeah; he was. If only he had been that amazing in the 2008 series. Why did they make him just as terrible as he was in Revenge of the Sith? The 2003 series already gave a great explanation for his nerf in the film: Mace Windu crushed his chest with the Force during the Palpatine kidnapping. When I heard that they were continuing the 2008 series, at first I thought: "cool; maybe they can recreate and update that awesome scene", but then I realized, "But what would be the point, given 2008 Clone Wars Grievous is already as terrible and cowardly as he was in Revenge of the Sith..."
@matthewmuir88845 жыл бұрын
@germanvisitor2 I wouldn't go as far as to say undignified: he gave Younger Obi-Wan a lot of trouble despite lack of Force-Sensitivity and being severely nerfed compared to the 2003 cartoon. But yeah; it's saddening what they did to his character in ROTS and the 2008 series. I read somewhere that the change was because they were writing the cartoon and ROTS at the same time, and the Clone Wars writers didn't know about the cough or his cowardice; instead having it that Grevious simply knew when to fold when he clearly wasn't going to win. But why give 2008 cartoon Grievous the cough?! Keep him the badass antagonist he was in 2003!

Not just a difference in mechanics with the arms and hands, also a difference in the movement of the lower arms, as they're usually depicted without shoulders, just sticking out from the torso. I assume this would have a big impact on the way the arms move.
@christiangreff57645 жыл бұрын
And also a problem with moving your body together with your attacks/blocks/... You either wield more weapons parallel to each other (which reduces the advantage of more weapons) or you wield some of them not in synergy with your body (which reduces their effectiveness and is kind of a balance problem). That's why I would choose a (long) main weapon and use the other hands for defensive (short parrying weapons or shields) and maybe one alternative weapon with less rwach for opponents that close in. My idea would be a spear/flail/polearm in the lower hands and two shields in the upper hands. Attack your opponents legs with reach (and easier acces because lower arms) or counter their attacks while blocking with shields. Maybe even better: One shield in one upper hand, a two handed spear in the lower hands and a shorter spear (or sword) in the other upper hand. Reach of a two-handed spear, defenses of a shield and a shorter spear (or sword) for opponents that close the distance; while simultaneously loosing as little as possible to the additional obstacles that having two additional arms creates for wielding weapons.

I often thought about traditional Nagas in this sense. Do yourself a favor and don't double the shoulder joint. Just bring the pelvic girdle up, potentially to directly beneath the rib-cage. Then just use the preexisting ball-and-socket joints of the hips, make the second arm set modified legs. The shoulder mechanism is _very_ complex, and requires a lot of interacting muscle groups and specialized bones. If you think about it, the most convincing dragon models simply mount a ball-and-socket joint on the back face of the scapula, as anyone looking at the anatomy sees the problem of just trying to double the shoulder mechanism. The only caveat to "leg-arms" would be the lack of backward mobility. Forward/up/down/left/right, all pretty good. Behind? not so much.
@LizardBrain7235 жыл бұрын
@@blackguard5883 A very interesting thought, but i don't believe snakes have hips and the appropriate joints? I should probably say by snake people, i don't mean they just have snake heads or features, they have full serpentine forms and these four arms protrude from a "torso" upon the upper part of this lengthy snake body.
@blackguard58835 жыл бұрын
@@LizardBrain723 It depends on your evolutionary pattern. But lizards came before snakes, and lizards have hips. Even if they were arboreal reptilians, or even weasel-like mammals, those limbs have to come from somewhere. Easiest solution is from quadruped to 4-armed slithering. And from my perspective (as a biology nerd), your best options are either in the trees, or in the water. Check out PBS Eons "Great snake debate" video. In that case, the pelvis moved down the body and was minimized. (Edited for typo)

For my D&D games, four-armed creatures wield war-scissors. I don't mean the roman siscor, I mean actual sisscors the size of humans. The scissors snap forward and *WHAM* your arm's been dismembered or pinched.

Here is my favorite: Two shields and two spears, practically getting 2 hoplites with the price of one. No more phalanx weakness on the right flank, no more formation drifting right, less chance of breaking the shield wall, etc.... Also two shields on the upper and two xiphos on the lower, very nastily effective in disembowling understroke and stuffs... Or, maybe two shields on the lower while the upper arms would hold a single spear. More control that way. Or, for ranged fighting, how about two repeating-crossbow? Now that would be an idea, MOAR DAKKA lolz.....
@thetalantonx4 жыл бұрын
That's definitely my tied for my favorite, with the other being four spears or four piercing blades. Being able to generate as many independent lines of attack as possible, or cancelling all possible lines of attack through defense and still being able to generate your own lines seems to be the best way to go. Second-favorite behind those two would be something like two short blades and two armored gauntlets. Being able to grab and neutralize enemy weapons and still attack.

There is also a little disadvantage to being 4 armed that their armor would have a lot of openings. Imagine the opening below the armpit on a normal human and multiply that by 2, plus the impossibility of using pauldrons in the lower arms and also that chest pieces that can't comfortably go around you back as a solid piece. They would probably have to use chainmail instead of plates for the chest and torso.I guess your best strategy is using shield + mace with a dagger as a secondary option and hope for the best. Because thinking about it. If i were a four armed man in battle with a human i would use 2 arms to stop the movement of my opponent and 2 arms to attack him.
@1FatLittleMonkey5 жыл бұрын
The difficulty in making good armour, and the extra arms, would favour the species sticking with shields. Instead of plate armour, you might see two shields on one side. A larger lower shield to protect the legs and main torso, and a small nimble upper shield to protect the head and arms. Lock them together to create your own "shield wall" against ranged weapons. Double handed spear on the other side. If the opponent gets inside the spear, the shields can be bought across to defend _and_ bludgeon while you draw back and shorten your spear-hold (two hands still available to move your grip quickly) or drop one hand from the spear to grab a dagger from your belt. (Aside: Speaking of shield-walls. What about 4-armed critters in formations. The upper arms could act like the second line in a formation, except being able to reach even further over the shield-wall. A shield and spear wall with these guys would be nasty.)
@DocWolph5 жыл бұрын
You might want to look at some species of beetle to get an idea of how armor for a four-arm would work. Pauldrons would not be fully required for the lower arms but would, if used, be considerably smaller or set lower on the lower arm shoulders. And it is assumed that such people would develop armor that is actually fully protective, not needlessly encumbering, and would learn how to wear and use it like a proper defensive system.
@matthewmuir88845 жыл бұрын
I would imagine that they can wear plate armour on the upper part of the chest and the upper arms, and could wear that over mail or a gambeson (and jack chains on the lower arms in the case of gambeson), and I think they would want just one shield; any more would be overkill. The shield would be held by one of the lower arms, the other lower arm would carry a spear, and the upper arms would carry various weapons based on the situation: swords and maces/warhammers if the enemy closes in, and javelins for throwing or for using as spears if facing an opponent with a large shield.
@ninjahombrepalito17215 жыл бұрын

I thought some extra options that I think you haven't considered. 1- Towershield and pike. Having four arms they could wield incredibly long spears (like a pike) with only one side of their bodies and on the other side wield a incrdibly big shield. That would make them able to engage enemies from an incredibly long distance with a practically total defence against ballistic weapons like bows and crossbows. Also, wielding the tower shield with two hands they could swing it more easily taking advantage from the leverage granted by a double wield (exacly like a two handed weapon). 2- Two handed weapon and two armored fists. In this configuration they would use the two handed weapon in a classic why but they also have the advantage of having two extra hands free. They could, for example, parry a blow from the enemy and at the same time grappling him, maybe stabbing him with a really short weapon like a dagger or some sharp studs on the knuckles of theur gauntlet. 3- "Super-heavy" lever actioned crossbows. One problem with a crossbow is the reloading times, parially solved with the lever solution. Now image this creature that wield the weapon with one hand, pulls the lever with other two hands and is already ready to place a bolt with the fourth hand. 4- Crossbow, shield and spear. Practically the same of a pavese-equiped crossbowman but with more mobility and combat effectiveness. Let me know what you think about these options and continue your work, it's AMAZING!

For the 1; I feel that the tower shield should be made for being one handed with the option of being two handed. That way you can two hand it for the extra nimbleness and leverage. But then one hand it and pull out a well place dagger if someone got passed your pole arm; or go 3 handed pole arm. I'd also like to see what 3-4 armed weapons they could come up with. I also feel like there are some weapon designs that could be viable for a 4 handed creature that just aren't effective for 2 handed creatures. For instances could a 4 armed creature use dueling shields effectively?

1 is basically a hellenic phalanx except with full size spears. Plus, the third hand can use a short sword so the phalanx doesnt have to drop the spears to resort to backup melee.
@Beremor5 жыл бұрын
Here's my two cents: 1) I see three big problems here, and all are related to the weight of the weapons. The first problem is that with a long and heavy spear as well as a massive shield, manoeuverability becomes a big issue. You'd basically have to haul around several pieces of encumering equipment at once which would slow you down massively. The second problem is that fighting with such heavy gear would probably exhaust you quickly. And the third problem is just balance. I don't see an average human-like creature being very stable on their feet while handling two pieces of unwieldy weaponry at the same time. 2) I agree, that sounds like a solid idea for dueling purposes. In general, having one or two hands free is a massive advantage in dueling, but that constraint alone still leaves you with loads of choices, such as taking a buckler or dagger in one of your remaining free hands. 3) I don't see that drastically improving the fire rate of heavy crossbows, but it might be worth considering. The big limiting factor of war crossbows (at least as far as I've seen) is obviously the stupendously high draw weight. If you have a crossbow that is light enough that you "only" need a lever to cock it, it won't have much penetration power, and if it's heavy enough that it needs a winch, having four arms won't help you much. 4) That could work out, yes. I don't see any fundamental flaws with that.

Now this single 4 limbed soldier (4arms) is doing his own volley technique that would normally require 2+ humans to stagger in order to maintain that same rate of fire volley. Yet just a single 4arms is firing nonstop (similar rate of fire as the 2+ human formation. Same applies if using single shot/ musket loading rifles. In fact, all the way up the military tech tree from basic swords all the way thru bows, crossbows, all the way until automatic machine guns, 4arms will have a distinct and SIGNIFICANT advantage. ▪Once you get to fully automatics individual prowess falls away and just accuracy of aiming matters.

@elementalist19844 жыл бұрын
Gatling guns are typically hand cranked. So if a four-armed creature is holding four gatling guns.. Who is turning the crank that enables the guns to fire? Your thinking about a minigun. As far as electronically operated multi barrel firearms..aka miniguns. you have to worry about the power source, which on early miniguns were large batteries of a similar size we use in cars nowadays. So with four miniguns you would be talking about hundreds of pounds in just the weight of the batteries. And that ignores the weight of each gun as well as the force of the recoil from trying to fire four at the same time. Not only that, you would be better off using multiple select fire rifles. Possibly M-16's or even the larger M-249 SAW due to the fact that they are self loaders and don't require a power supply. Even in this case I'd only dual wield rather than quad wield due to the need to reload as well as having the ability to use arms 3 and 4 for stability.

I think four armed creatures could make full use of the phalanx formation with 2 arms holding a long spear/pike one arm holding a shield and the final arm above the shield would have a small mace for countering any armored foes that make it past the wall of spears. Alone away from the shield wall this would still be effective at reach and close up. As for range the Roman pilum would be a great option for just about any creature but with 4 arms they could possibly carry more of them and throw them in mass as a group. Also the two arms on each side could be tied together and used much like a standard person's just with more mass and strength behind each action allowing normal fighting styles to be used and for there added arms to be hidden under long sleeves as well as there hands having twice the gripping strength and surface area. A four armed creature trained in western boxing would also be vary hard to deal with even if they only master a few basic combos.
@matthiuskoenig33785 жыл бұрын
roman legions only carried 2 pilum as that was all they useually needed as the pilum has a short range so they would typically only get 2 vollies before close combat ensued. a more useful one handed ranged weapon (for non-skirmishers) would be roman war darts. the roman legionaries switched to these from the pilum as it has greater range but the same penatrating power, roman legionaries could carry and use 6 war darts in a battle, in theory they could carry more but those extra would not be useful as you only get about 6 vollies before you close with the enemy (and bows and javelins make better ranged weapons for skirmishers).
@Rexotec Жыл бұрын
Awesome video! Making a fantasy race that 4 arms and I definitely think pole-arms would be far more utilised than we would think of for humans. Particularly the legionnaire combo - Imagine a 2-handed pike, kite shield, and a shortsword like a gladius, ultimate defensive powerhouse. The caveat I think is that when it comes to armour depending on anatomy it would be far far more restrictive and things like plate would limit the range of motion egregiously of those arms, which might make chain or scale the limit, which would mean shields probably remain prevalent well beyond what humans would think is necessary (I mean they have the arms for it, it's a non-problem really) The other option is ofc the berserker, which while falchions are a pretty good choice, think of perhaps a katar-like punching dagger with an armoured gauntlet to protect it for the lower arms, which would be far more useful punching instead of making big swinging actions, and you could hold up those knives in a boxing-like guard, leaving the upper arms free to wield anything really... pole-arm... claymore... I think my favourite would be some kind of naginata or guandao now THAT would be terrifying to face...

I am late to the party here but I love this concept of four-armed man-at-arms. There were a couple of thoughts I had, while not quite traditionally medieval a kite shield with a second handle for greater articulation of movement in parrying and blocking could prove useful. Secondly possibly leaving one hand free for grappling purposes, or allowing for the possibility at least ie) having a shield, spear, "longsword" setup were if needed one could one-hand the longsword and say grab the/an opponent to throw them off balance or disarm them. While far from honourable a "free hand" could deploy pocket sand into an opponents eyes while still wielding your 2-3 other weapons. This is all just a fun thought experiment, love your channel please keep up the good work.

Trying to imagine the logistics of holding a weapon with two arms on the same side, one on top of the other, it would dramatically change the swing angles and balance from holding it with an arm on either side. For a sword it could possibly be even better, since holding a hilt with two hands on the same side would allow for freer range of motion of roughly the same angles as with one hand, and the lower hand would naturally fit lower on the hilt. For a spear it seems more awkward, since two-handed spear stances take advantage of holding the spear with a substantial gap between the hands and shifting the body to compensate. Two hands on the same side couldn't achieve that gap as easily without holding the spear at basically up or down angles or having one hand way back behind you at an awkward angle, and using one-handed motions with both hands on the same side you would have a harder time holding it horizontal. Swords are naturally angled upwards or inwards anyway with one-handed stances, so hand over hand wouldn't interfere with the motion as much, but a spear with its longer length would just be sticking up into the air higher and you'd have to hold one arm at an extremely awkward angle to thrust it straight out in front of you. What would you think of using a spear with both upper hands, then lower hands using a long sword and dirk or long sword and shield combination? The spear would have the more comfortable two-handed stance, especially for downward thrusts, and could even be shifted to hold with one hand while the other is used for other things, maybe even taking advantage of wielding the sword with two hands on the same side. Or simply going spear in one upper hand, sword in two hands on one side, and lower hand with a shield or dirk. Love the questions you raise on this channel, thanks for all your insightful videos!

I would imagine that catapults would be placed behind the castle wall rather than on a tower; that way the enemy can't see them and hit them with their own siege engines, and also can't see where the rocks will fly until after the rocks are already in the air. For ballistae, I have no idea.
@bengrogan97105 жыл бұрын
I can't think of what video but he has already addressed this in one video or another. The basics is that the area and structure of a tower top platform are not well suited to carry the weight, nor have the size needed for siege engines to be crewed efficiently and cannot be fed with ammo easily - if such where used they would likely be inside walls where they are on solid ground, with space and as a 2nd benefit they are protected from direct fire from enemy siege weapons.

Good idea with the "rubbing the belly-patting the head" concern. Know idea if you were right to dismiss that concern, but still, good thought. That said, I have 3 additions to the conversation; 1) I think the idea of using multiple shields might actually work well with using something a little bigger than a targe or small kite shield in that the fighter could use the shields as bashing or chopping weapons when CQC but when closing the gap, they'd be a one-man Phalanx! This would work amazing when on a team with other specialists (say, archer 4-arms) or other species. Not to mention, this would be far more flexible for large defensive coverage in enclosed spaces like dungeons. 2) Assuming a Goroh/Machamp style configuration of arms (the 4 shoulders form a rectangle planar with the vertical), and assuming that their rib cages and spines are, at best, as flexible as ours, they'd have to be creative with their fighting style. The reason is that they still have limits to how they can use their body weight behind their strikes. (Same reason we tend to strike one arm at a time, leverage). 3) Last but not least, I can totally see a situation where 4-arms would be game-changing; castle stair-wells. I'm surprised this hasn't come up much on your channel, but medieval castles would often have staircases that would spiral down counter-clockwise and be very narrow. This allowed the predominantly right-handed defenders to have an advantage against any predominantly right-handed attackers attacking from the lower levels of the castle. Even if the 4-arms have are right-side dominant, they'd still be able to use a shield and sword on the same side which would be nearly impenetrable in those stairwells. (In other words, the one-man phalanx I mentioned above).

Shad, i really think you should do a part 2 of this. First of all, to explain why some combinations wouldn't work so well. Many of the comments here take into account only the arms when using a weapon, while you use your whole body for a swing or a defense stance (shoulder, chest, back, belly, waist). In a 4-armed creature, how the shoulders would act would be an important debate. Besides, where would the extra arms stay? At waist height? Or over the shoulders, from the back? They have the same range? That would be an important difference for combinations like the excellent shield and lance on the left side and two-handed sword on the right side, so that the shield does not impair the movement of the spear since they would be on the same side.

I think you missed an obvious potential pick. In the same line of thought as the doubled up bow (using two hands to hold the bow, and two to draw), using 4 hands on one sword maybe a *tiny* bit interesting. Imagine the potential power behind those strikes! And all these thoughts are based on the biomechanics of the second set of arms, their flexibility, rotation ability, etc. And that's something that can change from fantasy to fantasy. Heck, the most interesting ones I've seen are the ones that come UP from the back. I don't think using two bows would be very good, simply for the fact of aiming. It's the reason why dual wielding, say, pistols in real life isn't (likely, I'm no expert on the subject) a great idea: You can't accurately aim two projectile weapons at once (I'm sure some people CAN, but the amount of training vs the effectiveness of the technique I don't believe is worth it.) There's two potential downsides that comes with 4 armed creatures in combat, I see. One is energy. More limbs require more energy, might tire out more quickly, unless the internals were adjusted to compensate, as I believe Roy McLellan said in a comment. The other is armor, especially plate. There's a lot more moving parts with 4 arms than 2. Chainmail and other, for lack of a better term, less complex types of armors would work well of course, but plate specifically....it sounds like an engineering nightmare to me. For a fantasy setting, I'm personally leaning towards a spear or longsword in the upper hands (as the "primary" engagement weapon.) with a kite shield in the bottom left (or the creatures non-primary side. I'm assuming that the upper arms would be the "main" set, and they would still have a preference to one side or the other, like we do, and thus the shield would likely be in the least-primary hand.) and a dagger (possibly sword-breaker style. For added defensive capabilities.) in the bottom right. Two focused on offense, one purely on defense with potentially opportunistic offense (shield punch. Ooh, shield punch to the gut, unexpectedly. That sounds painful.), and one that is, at least in my eyes, equally capable of attack and defense.

I can attest to your claim of dual wielding pistols being very hard but possible I've done it before and the best way I've found is to use low recoil firearms (so they don't go flying) and to cock them inwards twards each other by about 45 Degrees to bring there sight pictures together then aim with both eyes open one on eatch sight and then alternate between them always starting with your dominant hand and finishing with your off hand. It's very inaccurate compared to normal shooting but is a very fun challenge just don't expect to hit anything farther than 30 feet.

In Destiny 2, one of the primary antagonist races is a species known as Eliksni, which are four-armed insectoids. One of the main criticisms I always had of the Eliksni is that they never seemed to use their lower arms for anything. Hell, they even developed a practice known as docking where they would cut the lower arms off. Mithrax is one of the better-known Eliksni, and he is a Splicer: a Eliksni able to commune with machines. In the Season of the Splicer cinematic, you can see him holding a Wire Rifle with his upper arms, but his splicer gauntlet is on his trigger arm, when it would probably make more sense to have it on one of his lower arms.

@caraadler70515 жыл бұрын
I know that physical weapons are discussed more on this channel, but I think a combo that needs to be discussed when it comes to a four armed fantasy race is the power of a battle mage. For instance a four armed battle mage could wield a spear/shield combo on one side and then perhaps a mace and healing/offensive spell on the other side. Although with spells another factor to consider would be how much available mana or spell slot capacity the four armed creature would have, and I think this opens the door to a variety of interesting battle tactics than what we are used to seeing in a fantasy setting. For instance a self healing phalanx could be unstoppable for a brief period of time until there are no more spell slots left. Or a four armed war mage that can cast three fireballs and still get off either a healing spell, a fourth fireball, or a dispel magic spell to counter spells from the enemy.
@Kindrick3 жыл бұрын
While the enemy is still at a distance, maybe a crossbow flanked by 2 shields. This seems like a good situation to use 2 shields in, because you got your ranged attack down the middle, and protection from either side without having to interfere with your ranged attack. Plus, you'd be able to close that gap when reloading, protecting yourself from retaliation when your threat of shooting is down. Or, alternatively, two crossbows, assuming you'll be able to reload one as you're finding a target with the other. At melee range, the double shielded crossbowman would be able to drop the crossbow and a shield, to draw a one-handed weapon and a two-handed weapon as their backup weapons, leading to the shield, spear, two-handed sword combo you talked about. Though, I imagine using a two handed sword with hands on the same side might not be as effective as using hands on opposite sides, so I'd move the spear over opposite of the shield so that I could use the two-handed sword with opposite hands.

People always answered my comments where I asked about that, and there whas always someone who mentioned that It would be not good considering the limitations that they would have for having to focus their brain to use 6 limbs and fight, but let's be real here, If a creature has evolved milions of years with more than 4 limbs, it's obvious that they are going to know How to use then better than us :^P
@JimGiant5 жыл бұрын
I agree but there would still be limitations. If 2 arms can be confusing for us in certain circumstances there would likely be circumstances where 4 arms would be confusing for them. Doubling the number of arms also doesn't just double the complexity either, it's at least 6 times the complexity and that's ignoring how much smaller the margins of error would be. With two arms weapon 1 can bump in to weapon 2. With four arms weapon 1 can bump in to 2, 3 or 4. 2 can bump in to 3 or 4 3 can bump in to 4. Like us they also couldn't engage with both sides at the same time without sacrificing reach either. In short they would have a huge advantage over regular humans with sensible weapon choices but giving them 4 one handed weapons would almost certainly be a bad idea.
@boomster22323 жыл бұрын
a shield and mace for the bottom two hands for massive protection and anti armour, then the top two hands have an instant legious for anti light, crwoud controll and for range.
