5:12 Another interesting thing to note in this view, is the lack of the decorative stone courses. Caernarfon Castle was basically built in hostile territory, and in 1294 the town was captured by the then Prince of Wales, Madog ap Llywelyn. At the time only the town walls and the outer walls of the Castle were largely complete, and the divide the two was just a ditch and a temporary barricade. Following the town's recapture by the English, the inner walls of the castle were built as quickly as possible and without the decorative stone courses, in order to better resist any further rebellions by the Welsh.

One significant factor in this scenario would be ease of donning/doffing. It would be difficult-to-impossible for someone to don/doff a full suit of plate by themselves. That was typically done by a squire. It would also be exhausting to march long distances since heat doesn’t escape well. The types of more-protective armor that could be readily worn and even marched in are (IMO): brigandine/coat-of-plates, a maille shirt with half-sleeves, a cuirass/breastplate. Add a gambeson with long sleeves underneath and a helmet and that’s probably all you could carry in addition to your pack.

Shields are stinky and make you the oildrum from half life 2 if struck with a lasgun from really far away, and are easily bypassed by missile-tech, bomb-tech, and dart-tech which all slowly push their way through shields. Anyone with a knife can make it through. Slow moving poison gas passes through. The only thing they are good for is bullets which nobody uses anyway. Especially on arrakis of all places, having a shield in the open desert is begging for a worm to swallow you. "Im gonna turn on shields" an idea thought up by the insane in the dune universe. It wont make a difference. If you are meant to die, you just will, and that goofy ahh shield wont stop it.

*In Derek's defense...* Yeah, Derek doesn't always get stuff right. BUT HE DOES start extremely interesting discussions, across a VERY WIDE gamut of accumulated human knowledge. The follow-up challenge videos, to Derek's initial "instigation" videos, is all part of what always proves to be a very interesting saga. Over and over again, I always feel enriched for watching all of the "follow ups" (...to Derek's "foul ups"; 👈 see what I did, there?)

In the german language there are two words for castle: Burg (a fortified more medieval like fortress something like dover castle) and Schloss( a more renessaince like less defensive manorhouse something like SCHLOSS Neuschwanstein). In the german version of the books Hogwarts is referred to as Schloss Hogwarts, so yeah Hogwarts is a castle (as in Schloss).

Early man, stone age: I have created this thing called fire. But fire spread, cause trouble. Hmm, if only I had a place for the fire. I know! I dig ditch, put stones around wood! But smoke inside bad. Oh! I put hole with flap in tent top! Now smoke escape, and flap of woven grass helps keep rain and snow out!

Artists and people are not mad about AI art as a tool, they are mad that companies are exploiting and training their models by scrapping whatever they can find on the internet without compensation, and then charging people a premium to use their model.

However. The United States Calvary carried swords long after the repeating rifles were common and their swords were far from just ceremonial. They were used extensively during hand to hand combat during the Spanish American war, the Native American wars and all the way into the civil war. And now they are still used by the United States military although more for ceremonial purposes and not in actual combat.

If you get a proper bath, wit proper tools, sop and clean washcloth, you rub you body like a chief and wear clean clothes... you can smell good even 2 weeks later. Yea, medieval people know how to wash themself because they had work for days and they did not like bad smell. Back in the day, you eat when you are angry, you drink when you are thirsty, and you wash when you smell. Simple

this is a problem of grammer ergo the word fortification gets shortened to fort then evoles a different meaning over time ergo you can fortify a slip trench but a slip trench cant be a fort . so a watch tower is and always will a fortified establishment now we run into the next grammer problem people pretending to be super cool and intelligent using a foreign word to describe something that as a word already ie french/latin castle meaning fortified shortened to fort causing problems to future generations ergo ye (cannot put the correct letter as it as fallen out of usage that describe th)is now spoken as ye instead correctly to say the its why education is important fun fact on grammer watch life of brian romans go home then realize english is based on scandanavien/german/french/latin making it a dogs dinner mix up

Something I find with these videos - they so often idolise the faiths of those making the swords "in the traditional way", when imo they wouldn't do the same if it was western Imagine if there was a monastery somewhere still forging swords the way they had since the crusades. At each step they say a prayer, etc. Would it be covered, and as positively?

It always amazes me how people fluctuate between the opinions that ancient civilization was either extremely intelligent or stupid. If the Egyptians were able to utilize copper and bronze mirrors strategically to illuminate their own palaces, why wouldn't the medieval era people of nobility spend money to do something similar? All it really takes is adding a removable copper lip to the windows and arrowslits to allow the sunlight to refract off of and shed illumination if the windows themselves didn't provide enough light. Vinegar makes an excellent cleaning agent and scented oils were common enough to be sold to peasantry all across the European continent. Even after the collapse of the Roman empire, the trade routes continued to exist, and they continued to do business all across Europe, Africa, India, etc. Yeah, I'm with Shad on this one. This is either someone who doesn't know any better, is trying to run a propaganda campaign(like the Revisionists did), or fed an AI generated story onto their channels to churn out content.

19:00 an addendum: since these castles were probably plastered on the insides, often times with white or another bright color, that greatly increases the efficiency of those windows by maximizing the reflection of light by the walls. The building I work at has the same principle applied with roof windows that lead into a shaft down the central corridor where the walls and floors are white, such it's well lit during daylight without needing side windows nor electric lights, while another building on the same campus that doesn't have the all-white corridor has similar roof windows but the corridor seems visibly less bright.

Katana can be divided into Koto(古刀) 10~16C, Shinto(新刀)16C ~18C, shin-shinto(新々刀)18~19C, Gendaito(現代刀)19c~ to present. Basically the price of katana is based on the history(prestige of who owned it). On the otherhand the less quality katana would be the Shinto made in the later 15th century since it was mass produced to meet the demand during the Sengoku period and the start of the Edo period when a high quality katana was not required.

*Shad got through an **_entire video_** on Castles... without shouting "MACHICOLATIONS!"????* Shad are you feeling unwell? After viewing that original video, I guess anyone would feel that way. *One thing about "Castles were cold"... **_the entirety of the planet during all of the Middle Ages were somewhere between 2 to 4 degrees Celsius (planet-wide) warmer than present day_* That's why Castles were designed the way they they were: to keep things cool (because the outside temperature was too warm). Yeah, during the so-called "Enlightenment" period (during the Little Ice Age and Maunder Minimum / Dalton Minimum / Spoorer Minimum) those castles were utterly freezing. Which is where the lie came from.

The giant pot is a good reminder that you're lucky to still be living in an era where the utensils and items from these past times are still available. If you go back to earlier civs, most of their stuff (particularly metals, since they can be melted and reused) is simply gone forever, and the mystery of what went in their holes on the ground will remain unsolved. We know those holes in the castle were for cooking in giant metal pots. Will our great great great great grandchildren know? Or will they call it a religious site of some description?

One thing to consider with dwarves is that in most settings, their warfare is mostly evolved from defending their homes and mines underground. This means close quarters, often with repurposed tools. Think: trench warfare. Reach becomes less important in tight quarters and long weapons would get in the way in mines, caves, and tunnels. Shields and one handed axes, maces, hammers, and short swords are probably the best.
