The cement board is a good idea for a skirting material. Flame resistant, and if you coat it with a hydrophobic material, especially where it comes in contact with the soil, you lessen the chances of moisture wicking up to your framing. Gotta love that good ol' bubble-foil too. Great stuff.

Great video, the cement board is perfect. I am a proponent of a totally-sealed crawlspace. If the crawler is cooler and the outside air is warmer (and warm air can hold more moisture than cold), then when the warm moist air enters the crawler, condensation happens and mold follows. I like crawlspaces built and insulated just like the structure above. If the vertical foam on the crawler wall can go down below the frostline, even better, the dirt floor will remain much warmer. Then a crawlspace vapor barrier on the dirt floor, sealed to the foam on the walls, finishes it off. If it is in the budget, a 2-inch concrete "rat slab" over a moisture barrier allows one to put a mechanic's creeper in the crawler. Talk about luxury! Heating the crawlspace by circulating upstairs air through the crawler is a great idea, keeps the upstairs floor nice and warm. Sealed crawlspaces. Frog butt tight, no spiders (spiders love air flow; they let the wind bring the food to them), no mold, same quality of air as upstairs. A wonderful living space for very short people!

Hi JC ive been watching you for quite a few years and remember privious videos where you show this method of the bubble wrap. We had a mobile home with lots of ventalation around the whole mobile. The park had a water leak under the home that no one (we had several plummers and the park matiance staff go under there with the same result, no leak! We were told there were several low spots that were collecting rain water and to put several box fans under there to dry it out. Which we did, but we still had a very bad mold problem in the master bedroom closet. The closet wall backed up to my daughters bedroom where her bed was also against that same wall. Altho we never saw any mold in her room it still bothered me it was there. Finally i called the water co. Told them the problem and he came to look. He said the whole end of the mobile was moldy underneith, and the ground was just saturated with water altho there were no above ground telltail signs. The ground was spoungy and that end of the mobile had sunk on its piers about 6 inches. He nosed around and found the water leak from the main. Told the park manager and we filed a lawsuit documenting everything from when it started having problems. We had professionals come and get rid o&$f the mold. I lost clothes shoes and purses as the mold was on my side of the closet. We asked for restitution for extra heating costs in the winter, replacement of my personal items, the walls, flooring, sub flooring and carpet in the master bedroom. Also to have it releveled and repair the roof as the 6inch dip caused the roof to crack and leak. It was a mess! Took the park 2 yrs to complete the repairs and we had to continue living there till it was done. As time passed the damage from all the dampness caused the floor all over the movile to get soft spots which we bought sheets of 3/4 inch plywood and just threw it down over the soft spots my husband even broke thru one spit in the livingroom with one leg. After that we started looking for a new place to live. The park manament refused to pay for new flooring throughout the mobil stating they had no proof it was their fault. So we moved and even tho we owned the mobil we didnt want to be bothered to pay for the repairs which would exceed anything we'd recieve from the sale of it. So we locked it up, left whatever we no longer wanted in the mobile, put the keys in an envelope with a note saying we donate it to the park manager! We decided she was so nasty we'd let he deal with it. Recently l had a chance to go by the park and its still there. There were a whole lot of repairs needed to bring it back up to code sp the park ate it not us! My hubby did do the bubble wrap under our next place, floor and skirting as the house we bought was up on puers, so thank you so very much for all your "how to do it right" videos. ❤

Wow! Great subject! We are building a cabin on piers , and we skirted it with hard foam insulation, no structural wood. We screw it against the deck ledger, then we put some dirt on the outside at the base and on top we line it with 6mill plastic that is also extended 5 feet around the outside perimeter too, keeping the moisture away from the cabin. So far, the basement is doing good. We had -27F , we had to heat it a little because we aren't ready to move in the house (no insulation in the walls yet) and there was no heat at all coming from the house. We are living in the camper on the property while we are working on the cabin. Hopefully, in 3-4 months, we can move in. Bubble foil is going to have a lot of use

Thanks for the great tips as usual. Seems if you can take advantage of the geothermal heating of the ground, you don't need to go crazy on insulating the crawlspace. We were looking into a geothermal heating/cooling system and found out the ambient temperature of the ground when you get down to 4' or so stays consistently at 45F degrees. It doesn't take a great deal of energy to heat or cool from that temperature to allow for comfortable living space conditions.

SKIRTING The method that you're talking about, using Styrofoam under the bottom plate, is a common practice used when building concrete grade beams on piles. It's called void-form. This is a good idea, as the Styrofoam also acts as an insulator at or below grade. Now sand can be used as a type of void-form, placing at least 3 - 4 inches under the bottom of the skirting, so long at it is not compacted. The combination of both sand and Styrofoam will ensure that there would be no heaving, whatsoever. Another way to ensure your skirting will last longer, is by 'hanging' it from the bottom of the cabin. The skirting is built using screws and glue, then installed with glue and screws to the bottom of the building, leaving a void under the bottom plate that can be filled with sand and/or void-form. I like the idea of flashing the bottom plate, however, I recommend that the bottom plate be clad entirely with flashing, protecting all three sides from soil and water. VAPOR BARRIERS It is always a good idea to place a vapor barrier on a crawlspace floor. It prevents 'vapor drive' from pushing up water and gases, like radon gas, into the crawlspace. It would also be a good idea to install weeping tile, sloping the floor to a central drain, which flows outside of the crawlspace. This is just in case there is a leak from the building above, or a mishap like flooding from outside, whether by mother nature or a child leaving the hose on. Vapor barrier should also be installed on the inside walls of the the crawl space. It will prevent cold air from driving through the the walls in the winter, as well as holding your insulation in place. The vapor barrier from the walls can be sealed on top of the floor's vapor barrier, creating a sealed crawlspace. Now venting should be installed, for use in the summer months, especially if there is a considerable amount of humidity or rain, but they need to be closed and sealed tight for the winter months...that is, unless you plan to heat the crawlspace. Just a few suggestions that I hope will help.

Very interesting to know that the foam method has been used before as i have never heard of it nor seen it done. I used to leave a void beneath the plate but then thought of filling it with foam and have been doing this ever since. I totally agree on the vapor barrier. I don't use it beneath my cabin because I rely on the ambient temp of the ground for keeping my crawlspace at an even temp. Blanketing the soil traps the ground temp beneath it and my crawlspace becomes colder. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You can also wing out with styrofoam equal to the depth of maximum frost. Will never heave. Done in the far north on cheap indigenous homes to save with slab on grade foundations. Also now common in the lower homes in Canada.

IMO I don't think you could overdue the styrofoam.

Styrocrete is cheap and will work as well. You could trench pour it.

It is a shame that many building standards don't include some of the more practical and cost effective means of doing this. The benefit is likely reducing the paperwork involved by getting out of zoning regulations until they "catch up" to backwoods reasoning. :)

Mr. Boss, I have a question?. I live in northern Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. I have a attached 2 car garage, with two metal garage doors, I want to insulate these doors so I can use this space for a small work shop Should I use foam board, or bubble foil, so I can try and heat this space. I find all of your videos most informative, and educational. Thank you. You certainly are a smart person. Bob

I always recommend putting the foil on the inside of a wall so that is reflects heat inward and NOT on the inside of exterior sheathing or a rim joist because that reflects cold outward and creates moisture behind it. For your application it a way it'll be doing both and I can't say if it would create a bunch of moisture behind the foil. Put up a sample and see what happens. Let me know what you find.

The best way to build a crawl space is dig footer and lay up cement blocks..then you can keep the cold weather and the mice out. Yes sometimes you can't do that and you have to build piers..just my two cents😁
@thebossoftheswamp9 ай бұрын
True but this video more related to building on piers.

Hey Boss, excellent video! Your thoughts on using expanding spray foam instead of styrofoam? The soft type for windows and doors. Just a thought.
@thebossoftheswamp9 ай бұрын
Yes and I do spray foam the joints and around the piers. If you had enough of it, it would work great under the entire perimeter.

Hello J.C. and Lori! Just wanted to ask if you "script" out your vlogs before you record them; you come across as so prepared so I was just wondering.......like all of your projects, they are always well made! Speaking of projects, have you given any consideration to merchandising that "Backwoods Logic" logo on T-shirts, Sweatshirts, and hats? I think it would be a good revenue streeam for you....(I would buy up a hat or two if you do....!!) Hope all is going well, and God Bless Always! ~Lou
@thebossoftheswamp9 ай бұрын
I don't script them actually but sometimes I've reached "Take 26" before I've spit everythiing out correctly haha. Yes I do intend on making hats and shirts with that logo. It's on my to do list. As always Lou, I appreciate your kind words.
