@@gibzbuh Shirase’s mom died because she went back to the observatory and got lost in a blizzard for her laptop to keep in touch with Shirase. Shirase, in the stages of grief, and not coming to terms with her moms death, sent her mom 1101 emails over a course of three years (at least one email a day), holding on a to a false hope she was still alive. The 1101 unread emails was the sad confirmation that Shirase’s mom was truly dead. Earlier in the episode, the girls ventured to the observatory that the research team planned naming in honor of Shirases mom, turned to Shirase with tears and sorrow in their eyes, because they too thought Shirase’s mom was alive because Shirase only mentioned that her mom was in Antarctica.
