I know its just a cheap Mora but idk about grinding a divot in the spine. Just use the knife to cut a notch into a stick and you can do the same thing without comprimising the tip of your knife that you seem to be building a survival kit on...

Really good. I'm an electrical contractor, so I have no shortage of electrical tape, but I watched and went to the store and bought an inner tube. Great idea. So practical. Also the way you did the cord with the plastic keeper. Very practical.

Maybe put the bow drill grommet on the side thats visible when the knife is in the sheath. Cause if I'm using the knife to hold down the drill I want the knife in the sheath for safety while working the bow with my other hand.
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
That is a good idea. I flip the knife over and put it back in the sheath while trying to use the bow. Doesn't fit great but still covers the blade. To be honest I haven't had a lot of success with the bow method of fire starting. I live in a very rainy part of the world so it's pretty much a last resort.
@BretCahill2 жыл бұрын
@@westcoastwoodsman2289 I can understand that. Bow drill will always be special to me because it was the first method I was successful at when I was learning fire making techniques.

I use a piece of silicone straw for the ferro rod tubing and wrapped everything in electrical tape rather than a piece of inner tube slightly thinner/lighter plus now I have tape instead of the tubing so it’s more expendable and no glueing required I did this mod to my garberg I did not add the brass or the hole in the blade I feel like it’s not worth it to weaken the blade enough to pick things up, a stick or gloves or anything else is a better option imo. And since the garberg does have a 90 deg. spine no filling necessary. I also have the morakniv spark and the mod I’m thinking of trying on that one is adding a small pouch for a multi tool or maybe tinder/sharpener

Saturday 16 November 2024 09:35 Hr. Thank you for such an informative and well executed video regarding the MORAKNIV COMPANION sheath and your favorite ferro rod attachment system. Material, tools, and information. The three most important things needed to be successful at any task. And your video encompassed all three of those aspects. Good job, well done, sir. 🎉 Hope this comment finds you doing well and that time is being kind towards you and your family. Do you have any information on how to use the MORAKNIV COMPANION belt sheath oval suspension holes that reside on the back of the knife sheath belt suspension loop?

RUS: Если добавлено огниво, то вместо паракорда можно использовать джутовую или пеньковую веревку 2-3 мм в диаметре, её можно использовать в качестве растопки. Еще и стоит раз в 5 дешевле, рулона хватит на много лет.

Hi, silly question here, but what is the pipe plug used for? I love all the other mods and will be using them on my Mora as well as my niece's. Thanks for the video!
@westcoastwoodsman22894 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. The pipe plug is used as a block for the top of the spindle in a bow drill set up. I made a short demonstration video today and posted it.

Finally found this again!!! Was absolutely positive I subscribed the first time I watched this and saved this specific video to do this later but alas the YT gods decided to make me work hard for it... Over 2 weeks to find this video again!! So happy I did (ended up watching way to many with people using electrical tape for everything ~ when electrical tape is in a vehicle wrapped around anything in an emergency bag for say 2-3 years when YOU decide it cannot wait any longer to checked because husband won't ~ and the tape has slid (melted) and left sticky residue that even the most OCD clean everything person cannot remove my search brought me to the best video ever ~ yours).
@westcoastwoodsman22893 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I'm not a fan of electrical tape either. It makes a real mess if it gets too hot in the sun or wet in heavy rain.

Great Mods !🎉 What brand of Fire Steel is that? Perfect fit. I want to get the same
@westcoastwoodsman22898 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm almost certain it's a generic Coghlan 1005 fire steel. I'm in Canada, so I just get ferro rods from the dollar store or Canadian Tire. I think the fire steels are all made in the same place. They all have the same dimensions, just the names on the packaging are different.

Instead of the bicycle tubing can you not use heat shrink wrap"?
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! You definitely could use large shrink wrap. I like to use bicycle tube because you could use it to make bands or burn it if needed. Use whatever you have handy to fasten the fire steel to the sheath. Its most important thing is to have the fire steel attached and with the knife when you need it.
@kennethmcdonald97362 жыл бұрын
I had the same idea a log time ago, but I found I had to slice horizontally all the way down the tubing or the firesteel got trapped in the tube

The butyl rubber of the inner tube can also be shredded and used as tinder...you obviously have the fire cord but you can just use bike inner tube to attach the ferro rod to the sheath for emergency use.

Is that 3/8 inch inner diameter for the clear PVC tube? And what width of firesteel do you use to fit well? Thanks so much!
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
Sry Max, I missed this question somehow. The tube is 3/8 inside diameter and th firesteel is just slightly smaller than that so I would guess 5/16th. Wish I would have caught this sooner. I hope your mods worked out anyway.

Just a regular Coghlans type ferro rod. The handle that Coghlans uses is a generic type that most of the "cheaper" ferro rods come with. They all nest nicely with the Mora sheath.

Thanks for watching. I like the hair band idea. I will give it a try. I suppose the notch does compromise blade strength but I haven't found it to be an issue for me yet.
