Having my orchids turn into “little monsters”is one of my life goals😺 thanks for another great video! I was one of the people asking for beginner cattleya ideas🌞

My first orchid was a Cattleya. I love Cattleyas! I don't know why Phalaenopsis is so popular. You only seem to find Phalaenopsis in stores, you have to go to an orchid specialty shop or order online for pretty much any other type of orchids. I've tried growing some Phalaenopsis but the Cattleyas are my favorite. We still have our first Cattleya at my parents home growing on a tree in their yard, it is a huge mass of a plant with dozens of flowers every year.

11:00 If you want even more red, there are now miniature Cattleya complex hybrids with true red flowers. The most common very red one is Cattlianthe Little Hazel, but hybridizers are making new ones on a regular basis.

I can vouch for Burana Beauty. Mine was a rescue and rootless and the pseudobulbs barely shriveled before it grew new roots. In three months it was completely fine. Lovely scent and easy to grow, everything anyone would want from a cattleya. I also completely understand about Princess Jacky. She's so special to you it's hard to decide on an ID without being 100% sure :)

I have a golden peacock! I actually never knew what it was called until I found this video, but I have loved it since day one. I spotted the bright coloration and rescued it off the shelf at Home Depot when I was around 12 years old; begged my mother to buy it for me. Over 25 years later, it's still growing and blooming a few times a year. Very very easy and charming. It even loves living outdoors in the summer here in New England. It's been divided at least once; my mother has the newer half in her solarium and I have the older one in mine. I'm getting ready to divide it again as it has 3 new pseudobulbs and roots growing now. Glad to know that it's more forgiving than other cattleyas regarding timing, but I wonder if it's ok to trim off some older pseudobulbs and leaves that aren't looking so healthy. It has around 20 good pseudobulbs to work with, so I'm hoping I can sacrifice a few. I love your channel! It's really inspired me to get into keeping orchids again now that I have a good, if small, growing space.

It's a pretty good list to get people started. If I may be a bit of a pedant here, the term "bifoliate Cattleya" gets thrown around a lot but it can be very confusing. For example, two of your examples here, Rojo and Lady in Red, have Guarianthe aurantiaca as one of their parents. Guarianthe aurantiaca typically has two leaves per growth, but it should not be confused with the subgenus Intermediae of the Cattleya genus. Guarianthe species tend to be rather durable plants and we often grow them outdoors here in southern California and wherever there are no hard freezes in winter. And their hybrids often make for easy to grow plants for beginners. However, the Cattleya subgenus Intermediae has many species which indeed have two leaves (or more) per growth and thus are called "bifoliate", and some of them are very particular with regards to culture and would be quite the challenge for the beginner, with only a few exceptions. One of the exceptions is the species C. intermedia (from which the subgenus gets its name), which is a tolerant plant, and is probably an ancestor to your favorite "Princess Jackie". Most of the species in the Laeliinae have more than one leaf per mature grown (and some like Epidendrums can have a great many leaves.) So leaf count in these days of commercial availability of complex intergenerics isn't so useful.

I have one called Marie's love, and we had hazardous air conditions and she was one of the few orchids I had that weren't set back. My phal was fine and my phal like ones. But my orchids woth more pseudobulb type growths were not doing so well. My okika nova didn't do so well, but they didnt die!! My spider plant did tho. I guess my point is that cattleya as easier than you think to grow.

Hi Dany, many thanks for your videos, I’ve learnt a lot from you. I would like to ask suggestion for my BLC Sun Mei Gold. Bought in September in bloom, now she has developed many new growths and also many new roots. The pot looks very small and roots compressed. Would you suggest repotting now? Or waiting new flowers first since sheaths are appearing on new growth, and then repot? Thanks in advance

Hello, so, I had a lot of algae growth ontop and on the sides of my Dendrobium parishii's pot. The media is just pure Sphagnum moss. I wanted to get rid of all this green stuff because it burnt any roottips that came in contact with it. So, to get rid of the algeae, I sprayed the surface of the pot genorously with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. It worked great, but I think I overdid it. The moss in the whole pot, not just the surface turned to a ghostly, yellowish colour and the roots visible at the side of the pot turned completely white, including (at least I think so) the root tips. They do not feel papery or soft, though, they just look bleached. But what really concerns me is that last year's pseudobulbs are shriveling more and more every day despite normal watering. They where completely fat at the beginning, but now, they look very rinkly and are as thin as a twig. Is there a possibility that I completely messed up the root system? I've been at that point this march and it was no fun to get the tiny new growths to push out their own root system. Now, they are bigger and I doubt they will produce a new set of roots from the base. What do you recommend?
@MissOrchidGirl4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think it may be a coincidence, if the orchid isn't hydrating I would check the roots in the pot, they might be dead. A lot of moss and algae is not a very good combination, try a more airy mix like moss and bark, with bark as top layer like I do in my recent repottings ☺️

Can anyone help me, when I get catts in the mail, should I repot right away or wait until I see new growth?
@crestedargo46634 жыл бұрын
That is not actually an easy question to answer, especially not being able to see the plant and its media! There are so many videos on this channel about repotting and about cats, I think that you could find many answers there. I would personally repot immediately if the media is broken, with algae, if it smells bad or if I suspect that there could be pests in it; it would be way better repotting when the orchid is producing new roots, but it's not always possible. On the other hand, I would probably not repot the orchid if the media looks really good and the plant looks just a little bit dehydrated or a little bit "sad": the orchid could have suffered during transport and it could be better to give it a break from stress (maybe a couple of months) before repotting. If I think about my plants, I usually repot them immediately, let's say 4 out of 5 times. However the best person to decide in the end is you, because you can check your plant better than everyone else! I hope this helps... I've done some disasters in the past, but now with good media and a lot of light my Cattleyas are doing pretty well
@medsurgcutie4 жыл бұрын
@@crestedargo4663 thank you for such an insightful answer. Right now the media does not look broken down or smell bad so maybe I'll wait. I'm going back over the Cattleya care video and if I see anything worrying I'll repot. They're so little right now.

That happened to me too and I also had small new growths on all my Cattleyas, which for the rest looked quite healthy. In my case it was because of too little light. I only have western-facing windows and balconies and it was too shady in house for my Cattleyas; everything got better when I started to put them outside on the balcony during summer (but NOT in direct sunlight in the middle of the day!) and when I bought a LED to give them more light from october until april, when they stay inside the house. However there can be many other reasons: bad media, too little fertilizer, pests, too much water....
