Thank you all for the compliments! Just to be clear - this is not EVERY app available. There are others that I did not show, but many others I have tried. None fit the criteria. Absolutely awesome video! You are saving 1000s of people many hours of frustration. I'm all for Scenic but as an Android user I will be using Kurviger Pro ($6 one-time) until Scenic is available on Android. Kurviger does not have all the features you (and I) need, but it is outstanding to find and navigate twisty roads (and Scenic actually uses their engine as outline by its developer in the comments).

it appears that Scenic did not invent the technology but rather has licensed it from kurviger who's website is... www.kurviger.de the kurviger company also has produced an Android app of the same name. kurviger app comes in two flavors: kurviger Pro which has no ads and has all features activated all for a one time $9.49 charge kurviger [free] contains ads and does not have turn-by-turn navigation I am in Ohio,USA and despite the ".de" website and app origin one can click the British icon/flag and everything then appears in English, thus far my testing shows apps and navigation is spot on.

I would have reviewed only Apps that have the requisite features-at a minimum, off-line navigation and route planning/creation. For me, route file importation is vital. Though I use Garmin GPSs, I use REVER Pro as a backup. I create routes on Garmin Basecamp and import files into REVER. REVER also has access to Butler maps. With the goal of riding the best motorcycle routes while I can (67 years old), I download/map routes then import them into GPS. RoadRunner mag is an excellent source, many States have GPS files and numerous Apps have routes.

Wow, must have been a ton of work to do this video! Thanks for making it. Just FYI, Google Maps has recently added (at least on android phones) where you can add multiple stops for a trip, so you can direct where you want to go, rather than taking a google predefined route. Great addition to the app. Now they just have to add the feature to android auto and that will make it my go to app: Music, navigation, calling, and all voice activated. While I'll use GPS apps for shorter trips, I still like my dedicated tom tom rider unit for longer trips. I like that it's built like a tank and I don't have to worry about the elements plus I have my phone as backup if it fails. I know there are a bunch of opinions on dedicated GPS for motorcycles and they're also cost prohibitive for some. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for the time and effort! I wish I would have saw this or something similar years ago to save myself a lot of time. However to accomplish something as epic of a task as this a great deal of time should be spent with each app. It seems that may not have happened specially with InRoute. I have used InRoute for many years as my route planning app. Its probably not as intuitive as other, but once you learn it it’s very powerful. There is a free version and the extra features are fairly cheap. I use it to route most curvy, most dry, least wind, etc. I LOVE InRoute for route planning! Also I am not a fan of Waze, but truth of the matter is that oddly it’s sometimes (some locations) better at generic rounding and navigation than other apps & it has the HUGE advantage of potentially warning you of obstacles in the road. I a lot of times turn Waze on without a route (for alerting only) and run it in the background.

I watched this mostly out of curiosity, and now I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $1500 for the GT package on my bike, that would have included "Navigation"... I never would have used it anyway! If I'm looking for someplace specific, I'll look it up at home first on Google Maps, or pull up Apple Maps on my iPhone if I'm out on the road somewhere. Otherwise, getting on the bike and just heading off in any direction and getting lost is really what it's all about. Good on you though for taking the time to review so many apps.

I purchased Scenic and the lifetime subscription. It works very well with my Sena 30K. I can play music and the app will interrupt and give me voice directions and tell me when I’m over the speed limit. There is a tolerance on the speed limit notifications, with separate tolerances for city and highway. The breadcrumb feature works well and I also like the ability to create and share routes. I can see routes from anyone that makes their route(s) public. It will navigate you to the beginning of the route and then through the complete route. I find it a very worthwhile purchase. I saw parts of my state this weekend that I would have never seen without it.

Hi Brian, thanks for all your contributions to the bike community, and definitely those of the FJR crowd (I ride a 2004 FJR). Don't think I heard you describe an app that I used for free for about a year, and then eventually decided it was worth just a few bucks ($12 ?) to go the full featured paid version instead. OSMand Plus has been pretty good to me over the last couple years of northwest USA and western Canadian trips both solo and with others. I use a modest Acer MemoPad ME176c (7") tablet running Android OS version 5, and find OSMand Plus provides most of the end to end functionality many distance riders may want. Note that this tablet has both American 'GPS' and the Russian 'GLONASS' GPS receiver chipset; I am always ONLY using actual satellite data, never trying to rely on urban cell tower coverage and burning mobile data for my navigation. I invest some time creating multi-day routes in Google My Maps, then export each in .KMZ format, navigate over to www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input and upload my .KMZ files, converting them on that site to .GPX tracks. All my desired details end up in the .GPX file, which I then just download to my GoogleDrive, then from with OSMand Plus, select that file, and tell it to begin navigation. It does good turn by turn, has no trouble with Bluetooth, records your actual (ridden) path to another .GPX file for later recall, and seems to be operating quite stably on Android now. Because I can use a tablet as a traveling computer to check emails, surf the web, maybe review a bike repair manual in .PDF, live stream my tunes via bluetooth, etc - all means my previous Garmin / conventional GPS devices are simply not comparable.

Nice job, thanks you for all the work you put into this. As someone that is also investigating smart phone GPS for motorcycle, some of my own issues I have found. First, Offline use, and the ability to import a route created on my desktop is a must have. Second, I will be happy to pay a reasonable price for a full featured app that will do this. The app should be able to operate like my Zumo 660 in that it can be used without a route and show me where I am and what streets I am approaching. One of the biggest problems I am finding is quick readability of the map. The Zumo does a great job of making the side streets very easy to see at a glance. Many of the apps I have tried are not nearly as readable as the Zumo. Side streets are very light white lines that blend into the background, or just have poor contrast. I should mention, that I am using a Samsung S8+ for my evaluations. The Screen on the S8 & S8+ are fantastic in the sunlight on a motorcycle. This does make everything else easier to read / work with. I have not yet found an app I am will to recommend to someone to spend their money on to replace a Zumo. The economics are different of you are looking at a smartphone GPS software solution VS buying a Zumo. How much would be reasonable to spend on an app to not have to buy a Zumo $$$?

Bryan, WRT the Rever app, I have to disagree with some of your comments in your review of it as I've been using it for a couple months--including using it during a few rides I've taken with it. It *does* allow the importing and exporting (using .GPX files) of customized routes when using the web interface--which automatically synchronizes with the app once you've logged-in. I've used both Basecamp as well as Google Maps to create routes and exported the routes to .GPX files and imported them into Rever via the website and they came into the Rever app just fine. The app showed a colored line over the roads where the route was to take place. The app also features off-line maps for areas which are inaccessible via cell service. However, there were no turn-by-turn instructions on Android yet which is touted to be coming soon (there are on v3 for IOS now), so you just had to watch the map to make sure you were following the correct route while on the ride. I guess that's why I still have my Garmin attached to my handlebars for my turn-by-turn routing. :-) Anyway, thanks so much for the review on the rest of the apps out there! I now have more to test out on my own. :-D

Hey Brian, how are you getting on with this Scenic app? On your recommendation I tried it and I find it excellent. Much better than Copilot I was using before. The only issues I have with it are 1. Turn by turn verbal instructions (which I do use) are often wrong. It does not seem to know the difference between a proper junction and a bend in the road. That's got me in a mess a few times 2. Sending maps you create in google straight to the app via the Scenic Motomappers website usually messes up the route and you have to edit it once imported. But if you first convert it to a .gpx file and then send that to the app via the website and import it, it works perfect every time 3. When you have imported a map from the queue (which you have sent via the Mottomappers website) and into 'My Favorites', it remains in the queue making you think it failed to import. It will not delete itself from the queue until you physically delete it. 4. It is not as intuitive as it might be. Eg search for an address, and find it. The intuitive thing to do (at least for me) would be to then press the big red button 'Start Trip'. But all that does is record your journey - not guide you to a destination. To get directions you must remember to press the much smaller arrow in the address popup box 5. If you search for a place name while there is no GSM or wifi, it usually cannot find it. Only if you know the exact address, then it works But these are just minor complaints which I can live with. Overall, I love it!

Noted that you didn't mention Furkot when reviewing Scenic (which has Furkot integration). Surprised by that. Furkot is a really decent and pretty powerful trip planner - especially if you are looking for POI/interesting things to see/do near your planned trips/routes. It's also handy for finding/booking accommodations/lodging, finding good places to eat, etc. etc. I'd certainly go to Furkot before relying on Google My Maps. I think you gave CoPilot short shrift. CoPilot does everything you stated as a requirement (it is a fully functional offline navigation solution) and provides a solution for Android (which Scenic does not). Importing planed routes/trips into CoPilot is simple (Furkot, for example, exports to .trp files). CoPilot is relatively inexpensive, but not as inexpensive as it used to be. Once upon a time - not all that long ago - you could get a non-expiring full featured account for next to nothing. Still, even at it's current rate, it's not unreasonable.

Thanks for the Video. As an opinion to your video Google Maps IMHO has nothing even remotely close to it for it's money and it's resources. The only way to complement it is by having a non-phone GPS. I'm curious, this video is now almost a year old. Have you found an app since that meets more of your criteria? Doing a North Carolina to Nova Scotia this fall and in need of a good app.

SO far Scenic is still the best - they say a major update with POI is coming in a few weeks too

Great explanations and reviews of these. I agree that Scenic does seem to be the best for the options I seek: verbal turn by turn directions; offline maps; ability to plan a route of my own. BUT, I have one problem with it that none of their FAQs nor help desk were able to answer. I use only the turn by turn verbal (not the screen) because I keep my iphone 6 in my pocket and just pair it to my bluetooth helmet speakers. My problem is that the verbal directions stop after a while during all of my rides. Sometimes when I go off the route to get gas or food, but other times even when I stay on the route. Any recommendations? PS I know this is not the official Scenic help desk, but I have run out of options...

It's not perfect, that's for sure. While I have never had them not go off on route, yes they stop off route after a time. I too run with it in my pocket sometimes. My biggest issue with it right now is lack of POI but the next version will have them, in a few months (claimed).

Very useful video! I have a Garmin, but prefer to have just one device. I'll try Scenic, thanks for all the research and sharing it. Stay safe...

the current version Sygic does (again) allow loading of pre-saved routes (with a current max of 26 waypoints) it is however a format specific to Sygic Sygic is planning to restore full functionality, but that is currently technically impossible (a waypoint is named using letters for markers, the alphabet only holds 26)

I find on Google maps, if you're in the bicycle mode for planning, it will give you good motorcycle-friendly routing.

Thanks for the information as I am in the process of researching motorcycle GPS apps or devices. I have an old TomTom and an old Magellen which I will experiment with. I'd not thought about saving routes as I was just interested in off the network GPS. I did learn that the Garmin Nuvi 1490T is capable of accepting routes made on a PC and I've found used ones on Ebay as low as $35. I just may research that as well.

Nice video with one exception. It would have been great to hear the names again. I still don't know the winner. Sorry but 1 can't sit for 1 hour.

Scenic looks good, except, it doesn’t show up on CarPlay with my iPhone and 2018 Gold Wing DCT Tour.

Hi Bryan, great and informative review. I am the same camp as you, an old TomTom app user, but miss the ability to upload .gpx files. Have downloaded Scenic and it looks really good. One question if I may, what gloves are you using in the video?

You made a mistake about google maps. You can choose to avoid motorways and toll roads there - just tap on 3 dots in the top right corner and you will have options there. Additionally you can edit the route on your computer (just drag the route to any point you want) and send it to your phone. What's more you can add points to your route even on the phone, so it's still quite manageable. Not saying it's the best navi for a bike but it does the job.

Many updates since this video. Still a challenge finding the best app for motorcycles! I keep testing and switching almost every ride.

The primary reason I use Waze is its ability to output the turn-by-turn directions to my helmet's Bluetooth device. Can Scenic Motorcycle Touring do that?
