Andrew Robinson With sufficient engineering, I can’t see why an all in one box - black or otherwise - couldn’t be “audiophile” grade ( a term I’ve long found troublesome for the elitist connotation). This video popped up in my suggestions and piqued my interest enough to dive a bit deeper into the Naim website, and I’m curious as to how you connected your turntables? Granted, I didn’t look at their own specs to see if they incorporate their own pre-amp/RIAA EQ stages and or DACs - a feature now not uncommon.

I connected the record player which has a built in phono preamp to the Atom's analog audio input. If your turntable doesn't have a built in phono preamp, you would need to use one with the Atom.

Andrew Robinson Kinda thought that’d be the case. It’s been over 20 years since I bought my current Rega 3, and to be honest, at least 5years since I listened to it - so there go my Audiophile credentials out the window😉 I’m guessing that as a currently active reviewer and recovering audioholic you probably get to see a lot more vinyl spinners with built in phono stages. The Atom does look like quite a nicely though out product, thanks for the review - and your continued refreshing candour.

What the heck is "Audiophile Grade" anyway. I am confident that an all in one product can be rewarding and enjoyable but, probably not for me. I will explain. I love vintage and tubes. That's all. Just my thing. Nothing wrong with all the other stuff and I am in no position to judge anybody's choices. I am eccentric and I have learned to embrace it. My own private Idaho.

I have completely transitioned from big, powerful, audiophile level products, to a more streamlined and flexible setup. B&W Formation Duos as my speaker setup, a BlueSound Node 2i as my central "server/streamer". The Node 2i decodes MQA and sounds superb via the Formation Duos. My entire CD collection is ripped in .FLAC format, and is plugged into the Node 2i via a 512GB SSD drive. My TV is connected via the Node 2i's optical input. My PC and my Cloud Drive, as well as my Wife's music collection on her Mac, is accessible via the Node 2i's network share capabilities. Sounds as good as, if not a tad better than anything I have ever owned in the past, which includes various high-end brands.

In the UK at the back end of 2017 I attended a Naim launch evening where the company introduced the Atom, Star and Nova. They used a pair of Spendor Floor Standers as I remember, maybe A4's. The first half of event was spent listening to a nice but predictable range of sample recordings being both streamed and accessed off the seperate Uniti core hard drive. It was as Andrew described across the board brilliant but it was the second part of the demo that was really interesting. While we chomped through a tasty buffet the Naim guys along with a BBC recording specialist set up a chair and a couple of Microphones ready for a really talented local young singer who's name escapes me at this time but I will add it when I remember. Anyhow she performed a gorgeous short accoustic set of 3 original songs accompanied by her own lovely guitar playing. The guys digitally recorded her beautiful performance. When she had recieved the richly deserved applause from the audience of about 25 people, the room settled and they played back the recording streamed to the Uniti Atom. The result was a stunning lifelike rendition of what our ears had already enjoyed live. It was to all purpose so close to her living breathing performance that you could if you closed your eyes almost convince yourself she was sitting there in front of us, it was that visceral and believable. Incidentally the big brother to the Atom, the Uniti Nova, is as convincing an argument for a high end one box music system as you can ever want. Expensive yes but if you offset all the money you save on expensive seperate Amps, Dacs, Streamer etc. You could buy a pair of High End reference Speakers and headphones and never look back, it really is that good. So not surprised but happy that Andrew and Kristy loved the Atom too. Sorry for the long winded story btw. 🤭

As an owner of the Naim Atom for the last 8 months I can say from my experience it was a fantastic buy. I paired the Atom up with Burchart S400 speakers so I was into it about $5000 and I was very worried about such a costly investment. My worries have all been put aside. With Roon and Qobus subscriptions the Atom was the best choice in audio I’ve ever made.

Andrew, thank you so much. Based on your excellent review, I took the plunge and bought a Uniti Atom last week - I got a cracking deal with a 35% discount!. All I can say is wow!. When I set it up, I decided to play a Best of Bowie CD and selected "Changes" as the first test track. My wife was in the kitchen, and within 2 mins she was stood in the room with me with a grin on her face, commenting on how fantastic it sounded - I think her words were "it's so clear and clean sounding". I have to tell you, in 20 years of marriage, she has never once reacted to any new piece of gear I have set up - until now!. We then spent the whole night playing CD's and streams, and the sound just got better and better as it warmed up. It was like re-discovering my music collection all over again. One very happy Atom owner here.

I would think people who have $3500 to spend on a streamer would already have an integrated or more likely a separate pre and power amp. Also while it's very nicely designed, since most of the interaction with it happens via your phone anyway, I'd personally rather have it tucked away where it isn't seen making that a moot point. I'm obviously not the target audience as I feel like a $150 Raspberry PI with a decent DAC would be indistinguishable sound and function wise but it does look very nice. The need for a very expensive streamer just escapes me.

My problem with any streaming device at this price is the lifespan. Just like Sonos just did, pretty sure Naim is going to deprecate support in 5-7 years and turn it into a $3,200 paperweight. I'd rather spend $2,000 on an integrated amp and $1,200 for a streamer. When the streamer gets put out to pasture, I'm only out the $1,200.

I've had the Atom with Focal 906 speakers for a few week now. It's amazing how simple it works, Tidal and Qobuz built it Spotify connect too. It's also got Chromecast and airplay support too. So it's got all streaming and internet radio at the touch of a button. It's beautiful with a lovely user interface that knob on top screams turn me up. I've also connected up my Rega turntable and that's now sounding better than ever. Overall it's fabulous sounding looking with the best UI on any high-end hi-fi equipment. I'm very tempted next to go for the MuSo Qb2 in our kitchen and take advantage of Naim multiroom. I'd love my record player to become whole house. Thanks again for your review. Cheers. Jon.

I auditioned the NAD M10 and the NAIM Uniti Atom a few months ago. I rarely just sit in the sweet spot between the speakers, i.e. I move around the room a lot. The Naim seemed to have a limited focus sound stage, while the NAD sounded good from lots of different places. Also the NAD has Dirac room correction, and I have an L shaped room shape. I got the NAD and am very pleased with it.

Despite your constant gushing over this unit, I am not convinced the $3300 tag would give me that amount of AQ improvement over what I already have. 2 years ago I got an overall sound (and most certainly bass) improvement when I connected the Line Out of a THX hp dac/amp in front of my Parasound P7/A21 combo. The improvement is so good that the Uniti would have to provide at least 4Xs the improvement to cover that $3300. I wouldn't make that bet.

I actually went into the shop to buy the nad m10. Preferred the naim for build, for the quality of its screen, and found it to have more punch and clarity than the Nad M10. Had it for two weeks and absolutely love it. My only issue with it is the hdmi hardly ever works connected to my LG oled,so I’ve just ran an optical cable instead. The naim is connected to a pair of Kef R5’s and it has zero problem driving them. I’ve had Arcam and Cyrus separates in the past and this has the beat and in one discrete box. As has been stated,it looks like a lifestyle product, but gives absolutely nothing away in terms of sound quality compared to separates

@@robertsmithrs407 thanks for sharing your experience. So basically apart of the HDMI issue you found the NAIM to be "better" in every aspect? Funny enough, here in Germany Naim is even cheaper than NAD. I'm really interested in having that HDMI port, that's why your (and Andrew's) reports made me to think twice. What are the pros of HDMI over Optical? Have you noticed any difference? How about the front USB port, does it read FLACs and WAVEs? Thanks

Thanks for the great review Andrew! I swapped in a Unity Atom into our HIFI system (Naim NDX2/NAC282/HICAPDR/NAP300DR, Focal Sopra2, REL S812 Line Array) at ~ $90K, and and it held its own with control, imaging and musicality. It is not for everyone because of the price, but if you are into 2 channel music there is NOTHING made from any manufacturer that comes even close to the performance of the Unity Atom. We also paired it with the Focal 806s and for $5K it is competes with our reference system in listening enjoyment. Keep up the great reviews!

Sounds like a real winner of a product for you 2-channel enthusiasts. Unfortunately, as somebody that really enjoys surround sound, I don't see how I could ever justify the cost of this unit. Sorta wish they would come out with a version minus the amplifier section so that we could enjoy the user interface of the all-in-one streamer. Hi Andrew. Thanks for reviewing Naim Atom. Had the device myself, right up until I borrowed a NAD M33. After a few days I was sold, and bought my own NAD M33, and my Naim Atom has long since been sold, the same is my Naim amplifier. In exchange, I got 2x200 watts in 8 ohms, BlueSound, 24-bit/192 k-Hz HD, Dirac Live-System, e-Arc, 2 MDC-Slot for HDMI and USB, MQA, better and clearer sound, more open and present sound ... more connections and much- much more. So all in all, the NAD33 is this year's high-end purchase, not the Naim Atom, and my B&W 804 D3 and myTechnics 1210 GAE with Cardenza Black fits the NAD33 perfectly, absolutely perfect. Try it Andrew, you will not be disappointed. Kjeld Krabbe, Copenhagen.

The reason I chose the PM-12SE over the Marantz SACD30n was the PM-12SE handled "burned" CD´s, CD-R and DVD-R without problems, (I have a lot) and that old bad-sounding CDs from the eighties, are lifted up to a completely different level . I'm interested in the M33 but honestly, the comparison here should be with the Naim Uniti Nova and not the Atom. I've compared the Atom with the M10 and for me, it's hands down the Atom. Just a fuller, more engaging listen. I'm hoping to get the Nova and M33 in the house to directly compare.

Naim has been around for a long time and is synonymous with high quality, so the price is not surprising to me. I will agree that this can be a product that other companies should emulate. Maybe a piece that does not have a built in amp? Without an amp it could cut the cost down considerably. I know that folks who already have amazing amp/pre-amp set ups would love this type of device as an add on to existing systems without paying for an amp that they would not use. I can tell by looking at this unit, that the quality runs deep. I am sure that there were no short cuts or cost cutting measures in the design and build. I'd love to take it out for a spin. But, the price tag would keep me away. But, I am glad that this is out there. It could hopefully inspire other products like it at price points that more can afford. Time will tell. In my system I do have a media player/streaming service that has the services that I use built in to my A/V receiver. Tidal, for instance, is one that I use above all the others. I'd have to agree with Andrew that the Application that is native for the A/V receiver leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to using the Tidal service. The native app for Tidal is much better when used on my smart phone, tablet or my Windows PC. So, if anything else can "trickle down" to other manufactures is how they can improve the use experience with the application's UI. I can also say that if the product can preform at a level that this unit does, then you should consider this "audiophile" all in one unit over separates if that is something you are willing to do. Just sell your old stuff, hook this up to your favorite speakers and have fun!

A shame you've overlooked the NAD Masters M10. Easily the most direct competition. Larger screen. Touchscreen. Bluesound interface. MQA decoding. Multi-room capability. Roon endpoint. Proper speaker terminals. Dual sub out. Dirac room correction. More power. Those are just the additional features. What it doesn't have is the larger price tag, unnecessary remote control (one is optional) and large top mounted volume knob (hello touchscreen).

Just because you don't see the value, doesn't mean a value for the right customer isn't there. As for your claim that I have to play nice with those who send me review units, may I refer you to my Polk Audio reviews. They sent two products and both times I wasn't much of a fan. Companies like Naim (and Polk) are real businesses and know that not everyone is going to gush about their wares, and not every person on the market is in the market for what they're selling. I don't know when this notion that if a product doesn't speak to each individual audiophile it must be crap started, but it's getting old. If the Uniti Atom isn't for you, then it isn't for you. No shame in that. But to make a blanket statement like everyone is somehow doomed because you disagree with one review, that's more cringe-worthy. Thanks for watching all the same, and be well!

Andrew Robinson Thanks for your response. All valid points. But may I share a story, inspired by you. It’s about a Pioneer SX-450. Actually, two of them. I watched your video about this unit, bought two of them on eBay for 180 bucks. I built a super unit between the two, hooked it up to my TLC roku 55 inch tv, added a Bluetooth input. It will do everything I need it to do. So thank you, pairing old tech with new sometimes is just better, and waaaaaayyyyy cheaper.

I auditioned by the Unity Atom and the NAD M10. M10 was more detailed, a little forward on the high end, a larger touch screen and blusound that works perfectly. It was also about $500 cheaper. I was concerned about the class D amp, but I have no complaints, 100 watts vs 40 on the Naim.

Hi Andrew. Another great review, so thank you for listening to thousands of pounds (dollars) worth of stuff so I don’t have to. Recently I’ve thought about adding a dedicated streamer to my system, or changing it entirely for something like this, but I went with a more convoluted home-built thing which to my ears sounds brilliant. Weirdly though, watching you and your channel has made me listen to more music recently than almost anytime since I bought my TV. I’ve only ever had two channels though, and my HiFi has been used for the TV / home theatre sound throughout, but actually listening to music fell by the wayside. Now I’m spinning silver discs again, as well as streaming TiDAL and Spotify. So, many thanks to you for your work. It’s reminded me why I spent lots of money on my system, and got me back into the pass-time of listening to music and enjoying my equipment playing it.

I auditioned the Atom back in early March, fell in love. My dealer then made a mistake with the order, and to compensate gave me a Uniti Star for the same price that had just been returned by someone preferring multichannel after all. Or whatever. I didn't care. To this day I feel extremely lucky, and he's got a customer for life. The level of control it applies to my modest Dynaudio EMIT's is astonishing. I recognize all of the sound signature descriptions in the video, the Star is just a bit more powerful. Andrew discribes it well, it's kind of addictive, you just want to keep listening. The only con for Star (or Nova) for that matter is that it's twice the size and therefore lacks the attractiveness of the smaller Atom (WAF!), edging towards the classic big black slab presence.

IMO a one box solution can absolutely be an audiophile grade. It been my experience that a lot of the gear that comes from the UK have deceptively low power specs and so seem over priced eg NAIM, QUAD, REGA or LINN . . . I think it may be British understatement. Anyone that listens to these brands or similar may not agree they're good value but will understand why people buy them. I also wondered why you didn't mention NAD M10 which is very similar in size and specs but slightly cheaper. While the NAD doesn't have that lovely NAIM volume control it does have a touchscreen interface and VU meters! and everyone knows that VU meters make equipment sound better ;)

I think this is a beautiful product. I have previously used a Sonos system in multiple rooms, and I loved the simplicity and how the interaction with the system worked via the app. However, there were always services and functions that were in the back of my mind by way of “I wish it could do this... I wish it could do that...”. That taught me to never again buy into an all in one system that will keep me at the mercy of the manufacturer in terms of functionality, especially in a fast developing environment where new services pop up every day. The amplifier section will probably last a lifetime, and the DAC may serve you a decade or so, but all the rest will be outdated quickly and that would mean throwing the whole thing away. I bet you that Naim will come up with a touchscreen version in a year or two and all you will think of is upgrading...

Everybody is a 2 channel home theater enthusiast. That's the reason sound bars are selling so well. Nobody believes it's better than home theater or even a stereo setup. It is either because people don't want 7 speakers and 2 subs in their small apartments or because they are stuck with buying a receiver to power their stereo speakers anyway. The stereo amps that have basic functionality that receivers have had for years, like HDMI and music streaming/casting etc. cost more than an entire entry level home theater setup. So, the only affordable option is the sound bar. I don't understand why more two channel affordable amps don't have an HDMI.

Naim has a well earned reputation for building quality high end audio components and you certainly seemed smitten by the "Naim Uniti Atom" integrated Amp DAC/streamer. The price will limit potential buyers to those who have high end separates in their system already and I am not sure that they want to bypass their expensive amps. I do not keep up with the Naim product line but I would be interested in a DAC/Streamer sans the amp. Thanks for all the work you’re putting in to these reviews! I find them very helpful when sifting through gear to demo. A question for you, since you’ve reviewed the Naim Atom and last year also reviewed the Buchardt Audio speaker S400: what is your opinion on pairing the two (if you tried that combo out)? For my medium-sized room (high ceiling a bit over 3 meters, and around 30 square meter floor space), I ’ve got the larger and more powerful Naim Uniti Nova amp. Back when I was deciding on which amp to get for the S400s, I tried the speakers with both the Naim Atom and the Naim Nova. Both the Atom and the Nova made the S400s sing nicely, it was easily noticeable how the Nova has more power than the Atom (better control as well as bass playing the S400s, not a surprise since they are a bit power-thirsty speakers). Until discovering the Naim Uniti amps, I had bought the NAD M10 amp. I tried the M10 at home for about a month, with several speakers including the S400s. The NAD M10 together with the S400 left me wanting more power, and I therefore returned the M10. My comparisons of the Naim Atom vs Nova were unfortunately made at the HiFi-store. A much smaller room than my livingroom, as well as being decorated with sonical improvements, instead of actual furniture. I now, almost a year later, have this itch. Would an amp with DSP/room correction - such as the Dirac Live in the M10, or RoomPerfect in Lyngdorf TDAI 3400 - make the last pieces of the puzzle fall perfectly in place?... I really enjoy the Naim Nova though, and only paid a few hundred euros more than the price of an Atom (though it usually is almost double the price of the Atom). I would’ve imagined being even more pleased than this though, considering my memory of the demo in the store, and the amount of money. I completely blame my room for messing up the sound, since both Atom and Nova sounded great with S400 in the store. Maybe when Buchardt release their own integrated amp with built in ”room correction” DSP, I’ll need to try that out.

The founder of Naim liked to make lower power amps and anyone familiar with the NAIT series of integrated amplifiers can attest to their sound quality. The NAIT 2 in particular is in demand and people spend ridiculous amounts of money for them and even more to improve them. The NAIT 2 has less than twenty watts. I really wish when I got into this hobby back in the late 80's I'd just bought a pair of Epos ES-14's, Rega Planar 3 and a NAIT 2. I'd probably still have them today.

Unsophisticated, non-audiophile guy here. My concern is that any kind of what I will refer to as an All In One device, even one as slick as this can leave you with an outdated, irrelevant piece of technology in a relatively short time period. Take for instance the best fixed lens camera or all in one desktop computer. With Moore’s law in a matter of no time the sensor or processor in these devices render them obsolete. So in 3 years will the Atom still be relevant or will the DAC or other components compel me to use it as a doorstop, step stool or set it on a table for a garage sale??? This is where the NAD M33 piques my interest with it’s two expansion slots. This would seem to help “future proof” the M33 to a certain extent. Everything comes at a cost though as the M33 appears to me it will run about $1k higher than the Atom. All that being said, beauty and practicality have never been good bed mates. I want the Atom bad, I mean real bad. I am a flawed, weak man and nothing would make me more happy right now to set this on my shelf and bask in its eerie glow.

*TO ALL VIEWERS:* I am well aware that in this review I say "Naim Uniti Atom" a lot. I get it. You do not need to tell me in the comments. But, it should be noted that I do not script these reviews, but rather work off of bullet points so as to keep them more "organic". In the moment I'm not always (fully) aware of how many times I say a product's name. I assure you if I say the name a lot, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with a review being sponsored or whatnot, it's just me trying to get my thoughts out. Speaking of sponsored messages, WE ALWAYS DISCLOSE when a video is sponsored. ALWAYS. FULL STOP. There is ZERO ambiguity when it comes to when we received any sort of promotional consideration for we always disclose it by saying, "this video is sponsored by..." If you do not hear and/or see this disclaimer a video on this channel is NOT SPONSORED. I have ZERO issues with doing sponsored videos as it is one of the ways this channel (and my family) earn money, but I ALWAYS DISCLOSE it. Additionally, I have ZERO influence on a product's price or pricing at the time of any review. I simply report the figures provided to me or that are publicly available at the time of any given video. All pricing is subject to change without notice. While you may disagree with this product's pricing, that doesn't make it "evil". Companies are free to charge what ever they wish. If people don't buy it, then they'll likely have to rethink their strategy. However if people do buy, then the price is fine (for them). Like I have repeatedly said in other videos, not every product is aimed at every consumer, so know which are for you based on features and budget and which aren't. If this isn't for you, either don't watch or just watch for fun. Lastly, if you cannot conduct yourself in a way that is respectful to others or myself, if you cannot levy your grievances without resulting to personal attacks and/or insults, don't comment. None of this stuff is mission critical in the grand scheme of things. A product existing, or me liking something you don't doesn't mean the sky is going to fall, or that any of this is going to affect you personally. Remember, the only person who has to like the sound of your system is you. Be well, and now on with the show. -Andrew

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the nicely done review. I own the Uniti Atom since more than a year a go and was excited from the very beginning that such a small box can sound that great. To be honest I’m a huge fan of UK Audio manufacturers (started with Rotel etc,) and went now for the Atom because of the nice look and good sound. Nevertheless I have some complaint which are related to the usability of the user interface. An nice example for a rubbish user interaction (from my point of view) is the following scenario: When you listen to the Web Radio in your favourite list and you change the radio station directly at the atom by pushing the favourite button on the Atom, the symbols appear in large size on the screen of the atom. If you skip the radio station of your favourite list withe the remote control it appears a tiny list on the display of the atom. Even to read the symbols requires to move closer to the atom. So for what do you have a remote control if the symbols are that tiny that they can be read only when you’re next to the device? This might not be a issue for people with eagle eyes and the ones who’re using their smart phone as the main remote control but it’s definitely not thought to the end. Another complaint from my side is the the display brightness in dark rooms. You can choose only 4 different settings (low, normal, bright and completely off. I wish NAIM would update their control panel with a slider so that you can lower the display much more. Especially in a dark environment the display is too bright and you can see that it shines too much. Power off button in the app Really strange I found that to shut down the atom you need to hangle through the app by pushing the small preferences button and there you will find the “power off” button. What’s that? The app could also provide the possibility to readjust your favourite radio stations or to generate own lists. So far I haven’t found out how that works. Anything else? I wished Naim would have left an USB connector on,y on the backside of the Uniti series. Uniti Atom, Star and the Nova look so beautiful and clean designed. An then NAIM puts a ugly USB port into the Acryl front panel. I mean they managed to hide the WiFi Antennas but kept the useless Front USB port that used only once in 18 months? My conclusion: A very well masterpiece of hardware with room for improvement . Especially on the App side when it comes to settings. All the best G.

An update: Seems Someone at Naim was hearing my prayers 😀 The issue I mentioned with the radio station symbols when changing them with the remote control are fixed. If you press now the favourite button of your radio stations the symbols are enlarged and you can see them from larger distances. Hope Naim will implement a finer brightness control of the display so that the atom doesn’t appear in dark ambient shining so bright... Still happy with the Atom...

Please don't use Steve Job's name in vain. $3,300 for a 40 wpc integrated without a built-in phono section and OEM support not worthy of the price, you were obviously paid well for the review. I won't buy a 50 year old piece of electronics that contains un-obtainable parts. Sounds like Naim will support this toy for 5 years, if you are lucky. No MQA is the last straw for an AIO.

Andrew has a good ear and way of describing how this sounds. It does not sound hi-fi with high resolution or much air. But its not warm either. It just sounds right, and its hard to put your finger on how. Naim has its own sound that is not neutral, it's for music lovers. You get into the groove and stop analysing things. But I am just repeating Andrew...

overpriced Naim junk. Put it side by side with a Bluesound or Cambridge Audio and it is destroyed. Had it for a month, kept thinking I was missing something, and sold it. If you love streaming, spend the money on the Auralic. One and done.
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Auralic is not one and done, as Auralic is not an integrated amplifier the way the Uniti Atom is. The Auralic is a streamer and DAC, and in some instances a preamp, but it is not a one box or all-in-one solution. As for how the Naim compares to Bluesound or Cambridge, to each their own.

I wouldn't say Naim is a piece of junk, but there are other all in ones that are much cheaper than Naim. The Naim brand is not known for it's value proposition. But for the price, you do get a very good build quality. Having said that, I wouldn't pay the price for this all in one, which will be obsolete in 3 years time due to fast emerging technologies in all in ones. They'll probably add in a DSP module or MCQ support in the near future.

Naim gear is far from junk. Ledgendary gear. I'm not a naim fanboy but when you consider how many boxes this one box replaces it makes the $$:more palatable and even a value in naims lineup. None of their stuff is cheap. Never has been. The auralic gear is not a all in one box solution like this. And I'm sorry this one box is way above the bluesound combo. Wondering if this person has even compared in person this piece. Folks tend to have this reaction to gear they can't afford.
