I have mixed emotions about Skil, although I am proud to see the brand making a bit of a comeback. My mom worked in quality control at a skil plant from 1978-2007. When she started they were owned by Emerson and at some point during her time they become a Robert Bosch owned brand. I also had 2 uncles in shipping/receiving, 1 in hr, and 1 in engineering. Growing up skil was the only brand I knew. Most of the tools we had were actually the ones my mom had used in testing. That job put food in my mouth, braces on my teeth, and eventually allowed me to be the first in my family to go to college. After 29 years working there they pulled the plug on the factory and moved production to China. I know it was just business, but when that happens to your family you take it personal. Swore I’d never buy a skil tool again. I had to eat my words though, and have to admit that their 12 volt stuff is about the best thing going for the money. Glad to see the brand living on, but it stings when I see the “made in China” on the new stuff. My old mag 77 with the made in the USA on it will always be my favorite tool.

I honestly respect people who have criticisms and make consumer choices for reasons besides tool quality or brand loyalty. Unfortunately, it is hard to find any tool and hardware corporation that hasn't made these types of business decisions either openly or surreptitiously and then tried to act like they didn't (looking at you Stanley/Black & Decker), or those who lobby for government deregulation or support predatory business practices which ultimately harm the very markets they sell to. Being a conscientious consumer for certain trades or hobbies is much harder than others, but I applaud those who take the time to deliberate and make choices beyond "What tool color is best?"

I just came across this video - thank you! I'm tempted to get both. The flip drill is on sale at Lowes now for $80 and the multi-head on Amazon for $119. The fact that the flip drill works with either their 12v or 20v batteries is incredible - all tool companies that make 12V and 20V tools should do this! The flip drill seems especially valuable when working on a ladder or in cramped spaces and don't want to carry both a drill and a driver, and even more so for someone as clumsy as me who's prone to fumbling and dropping bits. And the multi-head is worth it for the offset alone - when you need it, you need it.

Great video @VCG Construction! I still have my grandfathers Skil drill from when he was a contractor. I still use it because in some sense it keeps a connection to him even though he isn’t here. He was an incredible carpenter. Modern Skil and Skilsaw tools are great!

I can’t believe the features that set this drill driver apart from the leading brands. The light bar, included adaptors, molded foam case, the battery charging feature, and price too! I’m impressed. Great review! 🎉

I think something important to reiterate is the 65 watt charging you're getting from these batteries for charging things like phones. For context, most power bricks that used to come in iPhone cases were 5 watt chargers. Most bricks that come as fast chargers now in Android phones are in the range of ±65watts. Although I really like my M12 tools, I should've definitely gone ahead with SKIL. I had the opportunity to get a sweet deal but Milwaukee got me with their tactics. lol Great vid Vince, keep it up!

That installation driver is nice. The flipping one is nice, would be great if you could set them differently when you switch chucks. Set one to drilling mode then when you spin your chuck to fasten it to the chuck setting. Innovation baby!!! But we need more hours.. haha. Thanks for the video Vince, makes me think of getting an installation driver too.

Bosch, Milwaukee, and DeWalt already have the 4 way driver. The 12 volt DeWalt is very tough also, so not sure how much more power this one has if any. However it’s nice to have competition.

I have the Skil 12v line for my travel tools. Very impressed especially for the money. I also have the Milwaukee M12 I use regularly for comparison. Is the Skil 12v as good as the M12? No. Is it much closer than I would have thought? Yes.

Great to see tools like this marketed towards people who can't afford the more trades-focused brands. Still, it'salways weird to seed Skil come out with specialty tools like this installationa driver while neglecting more basic offerings, like the cordless router Vince asked about at a trade show 5 years ago. Oddly enough, Masterforce (the Menard's house brand which is also owned by Chervon) has a cordless router design which uses a digital RPM display and a digital switch-lock, making it a combination of the old Makita palm router and the Skil 3-1/2" corded router with the digital speed control. I know they are all seperate companies, but how common is it to see design notes or patents being shared among tool company subsidiaries (Kobalt, Flex, Masterforce, Skil, etc.)?
