You are welcome, Kathy! We've slowly been retiring toxic cookware from our kitchen. We can't afford to do it all at once but every little bit helps. Merry Christmas! :)

Great video! I don't even trust silicone utensils for cooking. I stay with stainless steel and wood. When using plain cast iron, acidic foods such as tomato, more iron will be drawn into the food. When I was a teenager I used to use carry aluminum cookware when hiking and camping because it was lightweight. But I was alarmed that when scrubbing them the water turned gray. At that time I did not know that aluminum was a neurotoxin but later stopped using them. People should know that most restaurants use aluminum cookware. Again, some of that aluminum is going into the food, especially the more acidic. Aluminum cookware should be illegal to use in any restaurant or other food preparation business.

I am using my grandmothers cast iron skillets. FYI if you are older, like me, the Dutch oven weighs over 10#--without ingredients which is why I can not use them for oven meals. Oh dear, I have put my wooden spoons in the dishwasher(on top) for years and they are just fine. I have had them for 10 years. Do you think we will see adds in the future, " have you or do you know someone who has used silicon"--you know those lawyer adds? HAHA! Love your videos.

I bet those are some lovely cast iron skillets! Those Dutch Ovens are very heavy - we forgot to mention that. We have a very old dishwasher and the heating element dries out the wood to the point that it cracks. We also have very thin/cheap wooden spoons so that doesn't help. We think about that all the time, "What materials do we use today that we think are safe that one day we'll find out are toxic". Thank you for watching and for the kind feedback, Jeannine!

I've seen other people use the "fish spatula" --I need to get one because I definitely miss having a flexible spatula for certain things. Also, did youall see me breaking my wrists carrying heavy pans! 🤣

We're going to need a bigger kitchen if we don't stop buying new kitchen utensils and appliances! The finish in our electric stove is starting to flake so we're shopping for gas stoves right now. The only wrist breaking I saw was from that awesome kettle you have! :)

Is the interior of your Dutch oven stained from food? I have cleaned my Dutch ovens by boiling a small amount of food grade hydrogen peroxide and water, but I must've used too much peroxide on one of my small Dutch ovens because I removed the smooth finish on the bottom. How do you clean yours? I probably shouldn't care about the interior, it's essentially seasoning I guess.

Ben here. Yes, ours has stains. I once cleaned it lightly with steel wool and it looked new again. However, Alex pointed out to me that the staining is normal. We didn't want to compromise the finish so we just use a sponge and scrub it until smooth after use. The staining, like you said, is just proof that it's used and loved. 😇

Thank you, Laura. Making videos like this is difficult as nearly everything these days have some sort of toxicity to it the more you dig into how items are made. Our intent is to get people away from the most toxic items and use some of these recommendations as a bridge. We are constantly evaluating our kitchen and taking new steps to removing toxins from our food and home. :)

@@lauracofman7128 We were in that position for YEARS, Laura. We finally decided that the best decision for us was taking a step in the right direction was better than being frozen with analysis paralysis. As soon as we did that, it was a snowball effect. I hope that helps! :)

@@Aprons.Overalls I'm so afraid of making a wrong decision. My teenage daughter already has heavy metals in her body, probably wreaking havoc. She has lots of medical conditions

@@lauracofman7128 We are so sorry to hear that, Laura! That is a more unique situation. For our situation, we tried to rationalize what we considered to be the most toxic - which were all of those non-stick coatings. So wanted to get those out of our lives ASAP. Cookware isn't a lifelong commitment and you can always upgrade to even "less toxic" varieties in the future. We did the same with foods. We slowly started paying attention to ingredients on our processed foods, then started buying whole foods, then to non-GMO foods and we are on our mission to being 100% organic. The point is it was too much of a change to make overnight. Once we got ourselves moving in the right direction with a decision of "how can I reasonably improve the situation right now?" allowed us get started on the journey and we have kept with it. We constantly are learning and using our budget to make changes/upgrades along the way. I wish you and your daughter the best and hope that you have confidence when you make your selections. Remind yourself that you are already ahead of the game. The vast majority of the population doesn't even pay attention to this stuff. You're already ahead of the curve! God Bless. 😇
