The guy in the back reminds me of Denis Leary. That's a compliment. Both the guys on this video are fabulous and very candid. Thank you for all the detailed comments. I'm training for my first Sprint and Super ever. These tips are truly very appreciated.

I started using Tailwind a couple months ago for long (10+ mile) runs and races....it's really all I need anymore. I just did the 2019 Tahoe Beast with only Tailwind. Highly recommend!! Thanks for the video guys!!

Brilliant video. I’ve never seen a couple of guys as down to earth as you. A little bit of swearing, you stated the facts and you were a laugh at the same time. Well done 👍 I love you mustard fact and the reason I was watching this was to find out about tailwind. Thanks

Thank you so much!! We try to have fun and share some of the odd but helpful things we come across. And our New Year's resolution is to take it easy on the potty mouth. The ole KZbin algorithm frowns upon that kind of stuff. :-) Best to you, have a happy and safe New Year!

Funny, as for the anti-cramping, I was reading the other day about mustard packs and pickle juice etc. Seems they work even before the salt can be absorbed. How? The salty taste in your mouth essentially tricks the brain into saying, "Ah, I'm OK now. Muscle, you can release." Thought it was interesting. Beast coming up in 4 days. Thanks a ton for the advice and recommendations. Much appreciated!!.

GOOD LUCK AT YOUR BEAST! AROO! And it's funny, our brains say "Eww, disgusting, I will release the cramp as long as you promise not to eat any more of that crud!" :-) Yellow mustard works for us, but we still think it's gross.

Thank you for all the suggestions guys. I’ve participated in a few 5k mud runs but now I feel ready to take on a Spartan Super. I was unsure on how to supplement during the race but I definitely feel prepared now in terms of what to consume. I might also pack a can of Guinness to celebrate once I pass the finish line 😜

Excellent thank you for watching! Yes, the mustard works, just the yellow mustard packets tho (not spicy, brown mustard, etc). It's too bad because we both find yellow mustard to be gross.

Thanks for all the info u guys post! I’m with u on the gu gels, but that tailwind stuff made me puke when I tried it. Got about 3 miles in to run and it all came back up! Lol 😂 doing trifecta this year! St. Louis Nashville and Dallas, Wish me luck

Oh no!!! Yikes, sorry to hear that. Ok, forget that stuff, NEXT. Stick with the gels and just good ole fashioned H2O. Good luck with your trifecta, be safe and have fun! Let us know how you did when you get a chance.

Awesome! Good luck at the Beast in Dallas! And yes, we found the Stadium Sprints to be kind of lame. They are mainly stairs, up and down and across aisles. Lame :-(

Cliff Blocks were my go to before, when i did half-marathons, they were easy to swallow and they don't have a stong ligering sweet taste like the gel i tried. However, i brought only that and water for the one marathon i did and i got sick of chewing on them in they end. I should have brought something else.
@OCRKings6 жыл бұрын
Right on. All that stuff, blocks, gels, etc. can get so redundant after eating them over the course of an event. We have had that experience as well. It's good to mix it up if you can.

Great video and very helpful. Question: Who makes the peanut butter gels that you talked about? Tried to get the “CU” (I think) from the video and Google it-no luck??? Name or link would be a great help. Thanks!
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Gu discontinued the gels I liked so much, but here is a link to the ones I use now: www.amazon.com/GU-Energy-Original-Nutrition-Caramel/dp/B00DP6ZWWC?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1 They have a bit of caffeine in them which I would have preferred to not have, but they are pretty tasty. Damer likes these in case you were looking: www.amazon.com/MRE-Peanut-Butter-Chunky-Spread/dp/B01NBVHE1D/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=mre+peanut+butter&qid=1574029006&sr=8-4 they are MRE peanut butter packets. They are pretty yummy too.

Hello! Thanks for the video - I've found this very helpful in talking the big obstacle (for me) of buying stuff to sustain me through my upcoming beast next weekend. I'm nervous about my first beast in Killington, especially about what to eat, so I was hoping to try out a few different things this weekend. I'm planning to bring the saltstick chews, a few mustard packs (although I hate the taste of mustard, you guys are recommending them so highly that I can't help but bring some just in case), some honey stingers, and considering the Cliff Bloks. About how many would you recommend that I take of those 3 things (salt chews, stingers, bloks) for the mountainous Beast at Killington? Also, without the MRE peanut butter or the peanut butter GU, are there any other recommended ways to get protein in me? Or would the Bloks be enough to take care of me? I did the Super in Palmerton ok, but that was my first long-distance run/hike, so I'm a bit nervous for the Beast.
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
Damn! Sorry we didn't get back to you before the race!! Hope all goes well - please let us know how it went. I would have recommended for the Killington Beast carrying 1000 calories of stuff. My load out would have been an item to consume every 2 miles. Maybe 4-5 gels and 4 stinger waffles. I would have had 8-10 chew-able salt tabs, and probably 6-8 mustard packets. I would also have packed 52 oz of water in my pack. Damer would most likely have had something similar, except he'd pack clif blocks instead of gels (he hates them). He's the peanut butter guy. I get a gram of protein in each of the waffles. I might also have carried an Ostrim beef stick instead of a waffle. They have 14g of protein. They are good for a "lunch" break and a good mustard delivery option. Also a good idea if you are going to get sick of eating sweet stuff all day long, sometimes known as sugar belly. Anyway, let us know how Killington was - hope you had a great racce AROO!

What gps watches do you guys use that lasts long enough for an ultra? Trying to find something that doesn’t die mid race and i know my phone would. The race pack is good but check to make sure the zipper works well and maybe lubricate it before hand. My zipper froze at a race just due to corrosion and lack of use. Worked to open prior to the race, in the race it was stuck shut and had to wait till i got home to use some wd40 and a pliers to re open it
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
Great question!!! We use Garmin Forerunners, and the newest one I have (the 235) will last until mid-way during the second lap. Both of us though are going to re-charge our watches at the drop bin area using USB battery packs. They will charge the watches just over 1% per minute. Even if you are in and out in 15 minutes (we usually take longer), you'll still get enough to probably make it well beyond the second lap.

can I drink energy drink on race day? is it effective for longer energy? thanks
@OCRKings3 жыл бұрын
You can drink an energy drink on race day yes, though that is not our preferred approach. We'd rather drink water, or water with Tailwind, or even Gatorade. That's preferred over something like a Red Bull or Monster energy drink. Too much sugar and caffeine we feel.

Have you guys ever tried the energy jelly beans??

No, have you? Are they any good? Are they caffeinated?? Let us know which ones and we'll try them out. Thanks!

They are Sports Beans by Jelly Belly. Depending on the flavor they have 50mg of caffeine. I've used them in a few Beasts and they taste great and definitely feel a little kick when I've used them.

I had problems with cramping at my Spartan race. Is there anything (like mustard) that I should eat a lot of in the days before the race?
@OCRKings6 жыл бұрын
Good question. Best advice, make sure you hydrate adequately the week before the race. It's not a bad idea to stay hydrated all the time, but at the very least, make sure you drink enough water in the 5 days or so leading up to the race. Don't over do it, because that will work against you, but make sure you drink the right amount of water for how much you weigh: www.webmd.com/diet/features/water-for-weight-loss-diet#3 (scroll down to the last 2 paragraphs). Also, make sure you drink a nice big glass of water as soon as you wake up on race day. Other than that, salt tabs and mustard will help, but those are more for dealing with the onset of a cramp rather than preventing one way beforehand.

The free lemon honey packets from 7/11 work great, and don’t have the lingering aftertaste of plain mustard. I prefer the salt tabs though, I bring 2 for every hour I project to be on course in a snack size ziplock i tuck into the hip of my compression shorts. I use them at the water/gatorade stations on courses from marathons to spartan races since i dont carry any hydration on me. Also love the cliff blocks, cant stand the gels for the slime paste texture that takes forever to choke down. I just pop a block in and slow chew as i go. I will be testing out your stuff too, thank you for another great video!
