The cars "folding" is one reason why the drivers don't hurt them self that much (google crumple zones). With that being said it can't be healthy in the long run doing that...

from my personal experience I can confirm that banger racing had me the least 'hurt' of any sport I've competed in. I usually compete in dutch autocross and was more stiff in the neck after a day of autocross than after a day of bangerracing :)

tldr the cars are bit with protection around the drivers but are also built to fold. so the cars take the hits and then as soon as a car is structurally unsafe, the marshals notify the other drivers.

Depends on the event and the track. Racing can get you a trophy but sometimes wrecking as well. Drivers only have to pay for insurance.
