I think they kinda had a few different straight characters based on the episode. Sometimes it was Ann, sometimes Ben and yes, sometimes Ron. But all of them also had elements of their character that were silly.

The treat yo self episode where Tom was telling Ben it was okay for him to get the suit and be himself was honestly super wholesome, I loved the episodes where Tom’s good qualities actually shined through. And any episode revolving around Donna is just good, her character is so sweet and kind, no matter how sassy she may act

I love that episode. No one needs a friend like Tom normally, but everyone does needs a friend like Tom who is that supportive about something we may be embarrassed about. Anyone who can get a "Ben Wyatt" type of person to express themselves and be proud of who they are like that is an absolute treasure. If you have a friend like that, hold on to them!

I think my favorite part about Ben is that every relationship he has are such oddball pair-ups, especially with April, Andy, Tom. They all rag on Ben for being a nerd, but he helps to balance them out. It also shows a great contrast between him and Leslie: Leslie is often the voice of action that tells them to realize the best of themselves, Ben is the voice of reason who gives them adulting advice.
