Burgess Meredith is one of the greatest actors who ever lived. He specialized in quirky characters, but one of his best was in OF MICE AND MEN in 1939. The final scene, where he realizes he has to kill his friend Lennie (Lon Chaney Jr) is absolutely heartbreaking!! His performance in the TWILIGHT ZONE episode, THE OBSOLETE MAN is stunning, and beautifully acted. He had a long and amazing career doing what he did best. Making us believe he was someone else.

Burgess Meredith reminded me here of my Grandfather. He was a champion featherweight boxer, survived the Great Depression, joined the army and ended up jumping out of a plane on D-Day with the 82nd Airborne, survived the war, used to cut wood, farm, and do everything he wanted up to the age of 84. He smoked a pipe from the time he was 16, ate bacon, eggs, everything you weren't supposed to, and he was diabetic but you wouldn't know it. He was all of 5 feet 3 inches tall, never weighed more than 130 pounds in his life and was the toughest man I ever met.

Burgess Meredith was one of my favorite actors, he could play anyone. He had some of the most memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone filmed, "The Obsolete Man", "Printer's Devil", and "Time Enough At Last" were some of the classics. He then went on to play The Penguin in Batman in the late 60's, and then Mickey in Rocky 1, 2 and 3. Going way back there's an old version of Of Mice and Men that he was in that's excellent in WWII he helped make several US Army training films. He could literally do everything when it came to acting.

It’s important for children to have interactions with older folks. Good perspective. My kids were seven and 10 when they’re great grandfather died. It was their first experience with death but they knew it was coming. I guess it’s how we learn

Grandma lived to be 91 and for the last 10-15 years of her life she lived on basically just tea and eggs for breakfast, then Ice Cream and Mallomars for snacks. The doctors would probably have had a heart attack if she told them that then they would have tried to get her on a bucket load of pills to "extend" her life. Then they would probably change their minds when she told them she didn't have any health insurance plan.
