I didn't have time to do the troll train whilst in Eidfjord with Fred Olsen last May, but did have a look round the art gallery there. Some lovely paintings and I bought myself a postcard print of my favourite. I would love to go back again.

My paternal grandfather's lineage is from Eidfjord. The family farm plot was up on the plateau overlooking Eidfjord, their one room house was down on the shore of the fjord (they were "Housman" or tenant farmers). There is a lovely loop of a walk that goes along the stream in town, up to a lake, turns and goes further up to the plateau where farms, a little village and the iron-age burial mounds can be seen. The loop continues down to Eidfjord via a steep new road, or better yet, off to the side you can still follow a path that was used by my relatives in the mid 1800s. It is hard to see the remains of a very large iron-age grave site, framed by spectacular cliffs on two sides and the fjord, (at the end of the second longest fjord in Norway) and not imagine a special Viking grave site. An earthly Valhalla comes to mind. As noted, a tour of the old church which is also worth visiting. We stayed at a nice hotel over-looking Eidfjord with a good restaurant (the hotel was a short walk to town). I visited in the fall of 2019 by car via Voss and the tunnels and suspension bridge, we then drove up to the waterfall on a beautiful drive where remnants of the old road still exist off to the side. There is also a national park at the top of the mountain on the way to Oslo which is also magical. David Herreid
