Agnes Moorehead was one of a relatively small group of actors/actresses who were fully successful in five media: radio, television, stage (musical and dramatic), film (in several genres) and spoken word. Unlike most, she made a successful transition from radio to television. On Bewitched, her costumes went from stylish to outrageous, but it was her voice and the cultivated mid-Atlantic diction that made Endora. (You could never be sure whether she was American, British, Scottish or an illusion of theater). In other words, talent and craft.

Endora will always be one of my favorite parts of this show-especially because I grew up watching it with my mom on Nick at Nite. She always joked that she would be just like Endora when I got married, because she would want to make sure that my husband treated her son right. Sadly, she passed away three years ago, but when I watch Endora meddle, it makes me feel like my own mother is still watching out for me (and making magic in my life). Thanks for the great memories, Ms. Moorehead. I bet you and my mom are exchanging notes in Heaven! :)

Agnes Moorehead : The one and only Endora
@nambypamby21473 жыл бұрын
@J LA I think the main reason she didn't like her role as "Endora" was because she had a long and prosperous career as a serious actor, and she knew she was going down in history for playing "Endora," so everything else she had ever done in her time would be over-shadowed by that one role. (this is just a guess)
@stmichl94333 жыл бұрын
@@nambypamby2147 I would say that's a correct summation. She had been mentored by Orson Welles and was a Shakespearean- level actress. Her vocal training and mannerisms bring the Endora character to life to the point that she plays it like a Shakespearean witch in Macbeth!!! She's that incredible! She rejected the offer of the role initially when asked by Liz Montgomery when Liz ran into her in a department store one day. But later came to accept it. It is true that great actors in those days would look down their nose at television as a new medium and not a serious space for their talents. Many old studio system stars like Moorehead who were ageing rapidly during the heyday of TV in the 60s like Crawford, Davis and so on felt TV to be beneath them and only did pilots or guest appearances when their careers were fully washed up and they had no other choice. But thank Heavens Aggy decided to accept the part of Endora because she gave younger generations a chance to see the marvels of her stagecraft and acting talents. Watching Aggy play Endora should be a masterclass for young actors these days in how to chew up the scenery and steal a show, single-handedly!!
@nambypamby21473 жыл бұрын
@@stmichl9433 Great explanation. I appreciate the details. She was too damn good. Also, Maurice Evans was another one on the show that could act on a whole other level. He was brilliant. There are no Aggys and Maurices anymore; not on TV anyway.
@stmichl94333 жыл бұрын
@@nambypamby2147 that's right. You might get them in the theatre. But not on tv and dare I say even in motion pictures these days. There are no actors - even the ones that people say are great like Anthony Hopkins - that are like those 2. It was a whole other caliber of actor and performer. I think a great deal has to do with the use of one's voice and an actor's elocution and articulation abilities. Many even so called legendary actors now - even Streep - don't have that baffling and beautiful elocution that Aggy and Maurice had. They have a Shakespearean way with the expression of the English language as well as a particular way of enunciating, pausing, and also the use of their whole bodies to make a point, or perhaps to stress an emotion or line. Watch the way Aggy often scrunches her face up, or her stare, her glare or the way she uses her hands. Her ability to express and interpret a witch's conjuring with the waving of her hands and kinaesthetics of her arms and shoulders I always thought (even when I was a kid) were absolutely mesmerising. Strangely, and queerly, Aggy's interpretation of Endora was somehow very modern at the time, as we hadn't really seen witch's portrayed in this way. They were usually old hags. But Aggy's innate and glamorous fashion sense (those were all her own wardrobe as her clothes weren't provided by the Producers or studio) really lent a certain vitality and modernity to the role of Endora. Watching her pop in and out of various fabulous ensembles (really chic two-piece suits often) and a plethora of different Hairstyles and costume jewellery for each outfit) was part of the real magic of Bewitched. It was like a small-screen runway show at a time when we didn't have internet or runway to watch everywhere. But Endora's moving and magical fashion show was really something to watch in those days! One has to remember that Bewitched began in black and white and moved into colour and so the female audience as well as the then closeted gay audience) were able to hold their breath in anticipation of Endora's next fashion trick, or gasp at her next look. Usually, she would change out of her signature turquoise and amethyst chiffon "Endora" witch's caftan and into something "mortal" whenever a visitor came to the door unexpectedly. Endora's transitions between costumes was to me such an integral part of the trope of "passing" for queer people. Agnes was a lesbian herself and I feel looking back, that this shift from witch to mortal; from queer to acceptable; from kooky to respectable was way ahead of its time but also very much of its time in prefiguring the three liberation movements of the time: womens', gay and black through the metaphors of taboo magic and witchcraft. I just loved all those nuances and transitions in the teleplay featuring Aggy as Endora. These are stagecraft feats that a lesser actress just wouldn't have understood or perhaps underplayed, but Aggy Moorehead got it all implicitly right. She was really quite something. Quite an artist.

Its interesting to note how little comedic work, Agnes had in her distinguished career, prior to this role. The real magic came from the actress, not the special effects dept. This woman was one of the greats of cinema and stage. Not only could she not give a bad performance, she could not deliver a line that did not burn indelibly. There was not a dull, drab or inconsequential moment in any of Moorehead's body of work.

I think the older generation of British Shakespearean actors, tended to look down on things like working in television, or science fiction and fantasy, as a step down, as something of an embarrassment to their career. The way that Alec Guinness felt about doing Star Wars... What they didn’t realize about pop culture phenoms in television and film... is how much they are loved, by a mass audience of fans, far wider than stage and even the big screen. All these years later, both old and new generations of fans, love them. This woman was an acting powerhouse. Anything she set her talents to was elevated. Plain and simple. It’s all good. All of it. We were lucky to have them. Truly.
