Both Maurice Evans and Agnes Moorehead made their reputations in the legitimate theater, playing in both classical drama , comedy, even musicals by the greatest of dramatists like Shakespeare, Aescalyus, Bernard Shaw. Behrman, etc. The only difference between the two, was one did it on the West End, the other on Broadway. You can see that training and background in their performances of these two perfectly if broadly created characters.

+Callista Soo, the original Darrin ( Dick York ) had to leave the series do to a serious back injury he got while filming the 1959 movie They Came to Cordura with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth that York would receive a permanently disabling back injury. In York's own words: "Gary Cooper and I were propelling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' men down [the] railroad track. I was on the bottom stroke of this sort of teeter-totter mechanism that made the handcar run. I was just lifting the handle up as the director yelled 'cut!' and one of the "wounded" cast members reached up and grabbed the handle. I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed-one hundred and eighty pounds or so. The muscles along the right side of my back tore. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, the addiction, the lost career. HE was in pain through out the first 4 seasons of Bewitched Because of his back injury, which sometimes caused him to seize up in debilitating pain and York requiring assistance to walk around. some episodes had him in bed or sitting on the couch In spite of his suffering, York maintained a professional presence on camera. While filming the fifth season-episode "Daddy Does His Thing," York fell ill and passed out he was too sick to go on. he had a temperature of 105, full of strong antibiotics, for almost 10 days. From York's hospital bed, he and director William Asher discussed York's future. "Do you want to quit?" Asher asked. "If it's all right with you, Billy," York replied. With that, York left the show to devote himself to recovery. From season six until the series ended in 1972, the role of Darrin Stephens was played by actor Dick Sargent. Sargent was originally offered the role of Darrin in 1964, but turned it down to do a short-lived sitcom called Broadside.

Of course, Dick Sargent was gay (so was Maurice Evans; we won't even mention Paul Lynde…) and Dick York wasn't. York's Darren was much more obviously attracted to Samantha. But yeah, even Robert Reed was more able to portray a convincing heterosexual character than Sargent. For whatever reason, Sargent's character was written and directed as more dyspeptic and grumpy than York's had been.

I am sure I and in the minority but I think Dick Sargent did okay in the role. He was more calm than Dick York's version. I am 40 so I wasn't around when the show originally aired. Elizabeth sure looked very stunning in that short dress. She sure does look very sexy. It would have been great to have a mon that dressed like that.

@twill50773 жыл бұрын
No, they had an open marriage. Maurice explained it in the episode where Endora changes his young personal assistant into an elderly one.
