Wait, WHOLE PLAYTHROUGH? all routes ? 🫠 But yeah, this game is maybe the best switch game to me as well. I REALLY hope we will get more of the persona social mechanics for the next big fire emblem.

This together with the more "realistic" or grounded character artstyle and multiple story paths, makes 3 Houses my fav of the series or at least top 3. I´m always impressed how good 3H is in general, considering it seems it was rushed and left unfinished in many aspects. Maybe in 15 years they remake it and add all the features and story bits we missed (and listening to the Edge of Dawn thinking Edelgard is the one singing won´t hurt as much)

The writing of Three Houses is what draws me in the most. Especially with the characters. They felt like actual people, not just tropes with a face, which a lot of fire emblem games don't seem to get right.

Sadly the hardcore FE fanbase seems to have more mixed to negative opinions on 3H because they miss weapon triangles and feel there's too much dead time between "gameplay" (aka battle maps). Also they usually don't care about the story. But after having 3.5 stories and some of them being the best in the franchise in a single game Engage felt like such a mistep. Not only because of the anime v-tuber aesthetic but also streamlining too much the characters and story while being a nostalgia trip throught the franchise (with spoilers for some of the older games) just when the series had hooked many casuals and first time players again. Sales numbers don't lie. Same as Awakening, 3H re-invigorated the series. Even if I didn't enjoy every aspect I'm glad they can do this mass attention grabbers to keep the series alive when it's needed. Just hope they balance things better for the next game

But I have to agree, and I hope Intelligent Systems see this trend and can continue to invest in a good story, while still keeping gameplay rewarding and well paced. But even then, I would sooner go play 3H over Engage, even if Engage has better gameplay.

@@mafiousbj It's more so that while running around the monastery picking up items etc. is fine and fun for the first couple of months, but having to do it usually 1-2 times a month (per story chapter) DOES become tedious busy work quickly, even on a first playthrough. Bonding activities like meals, fishing for instructor points (how does fishing make you a better instructor?), and finding and talking with everyone; these are intended for the player to do as a rational, economical side of the game and they DO NOT particularly add to the story once you've done the repeatable activities once or twice. Like, yeah I get it Petra and Rapael like meat, Lorenz and Dorathea like singing... That tells me something about their characters, but once I know it I know it. Don't make me spend 20 minutes doing the same busy work over and over between chapters just to avoid missing out on resources they need for instruction and battle. If anything that depersonalises and abstracts the characters to numbers and values, tools to optimised, instead of simulated PERSONS with agency, with whom we could share special moments.

It's what kept me going through what was otherwise quite a slouch of a game. Its highs were majestic, the story had a fantastic premise with loveable characters and an incentive for another run. It was held back severely by overly drawn out sidestuff, such as the monastery and the fact you'd have to go through that first section of the game again. Reliance on too many gameplay elements and mechanics, combined with uninspired, often reused maps, hindered by a relatively poor technical performance. Would love for this series to perhaps take a step back, and take a few notes from Triangle Strategy. That being said, I still hold the game dear, being my first game on Switch as well as the first game I played in this series. It's a good game. Just too ambitious for its own good.

1:46:48 Makes me remember all the times I made friends fight each other on my first playthroughs, before I knew how recruiting worked, and I was left with my heart broken. RIP: Mercedes vs Annette, Byleth vs Edelgard, Caspar vs Linhardt, Edelgard vs Dimitri, Catherine vs Shimir, the entire Blue Lion friend group. I felt like a monster tearing these relationships apart.

It's a shame FE3H music isn't on Spotify. There are ways I can listen to it, but it would be convenient. This is some of the best music in Fire Emblem and I hate to see all these restrictions on these songs.
