It's not even a puzzle, it's a block labeled with the number of times you hit it to turn it a different color, and even though they change color, seemingly randomly to them, you should know that's the key and stop hitting it! I hate ranting like this, but it really is kinda dumb that they couldn't get it and thought people were just being assholes (sure, though, many were), but when you think about it, that rage is kinda justified. That's not even a puzzle, really. By Paper Mario standards, that's like the easiest it gets.
