Typically, people would use wax, as in Greece, papyrus, as in Egypt, clay tablets, as in Mesopotamia and the near east, and leaves, as in S.E. Asia. They would usually write with a stylus that could gouge the material, or a brush/early pen and ink. However, stone would be used if a message was of particular import, like the great carvings of Egyptian tombs, Hammurabi’s code, or the structures of Rome that featured script. There were other ways of “writing” too, that are even more fascinating. Some Native American peoples have wampum: beads arranged in very specific ways to impart a message or concept, though, as far as I know, these are more symbolic, and were never really used day-to-day as mundane records. The Inca, had a similar system, where they would tie knots in a length of string to convey a message or keep record.
