So, wanzer is short for "walking panzer", but that doesn't make sense, one word is German and the other is English. It should use the English word "tank". They should call them "Wanks".

It's partly because "panzer" is the word for "armor" which also just happens to be used for their tanks. Wanzers are walking armored units, so calling them walking armor is pretty accurate.
