I can totally understand that guy buying his wife a pool table. If she enjoys playing pool, it's a gesture that says he wants to spend quality time with her. I once bought my wife a set of golf clubs for our anniversary. The golf shop clerk questioned me, and I answered that I was going to teach her golf. Again, it said that I wanted to spend quality time with, instead of escaping the house, leaving her there for hours during the day.
