Thank you for the great collection of legendary dance numbers and the stars of the Hollywood Golden Era. Russ Tamblyn... an unsung hero of the West Side Story acrobatic dancing style. We all remember Rita Moreno, Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, gorgeous Gina Trikonis and Richard Beymer and legendary choreography by Jerome Robbins and the divine music by Leonard Bernstein, but it was Russ Tamblyn who made us smile with his iconic Officer Krupke dance number...

I first saw Donald O'Connor in the mid fifties doing the "Francis the Talking Mule" movies. Later, when I saw him in other work I thought how callous Hollywood could be relegating such a fine actor and dancer to these absurd movies. They were enjoyable as a kid, but after knowing and seeing what Donald was capable of doing, well, what a shame. One wonders what would cause him to work in those films. For the money? His fame was fleeting. Too bad.

You missed Eleanor Powell - greatest tap pioneer of the movies! Beautiful, creative, athletic, graceful, ethereal, unique. Head and shoulders above all the rest. Her own choreographer and blazed the trail for every female dancer that followed- or tried too. Also an integrationist ahead of the times. One of the most remarkable dancing performers in movie history.

Dancers in general have their own unique style and express it differently. Gene Kelly, Cyd Charrise, Nicholas brothers, Fred Astaire, they're all great. Overall, this stuff is better than the garbage we see/hear today.

There is a moment from 'Thousands Cheer'. Clearly the compiler wanted to stress the Technicolor period, but Metro's golden time had begun in 1935 with 'The Great Ziegfeld' the first Eddy-MacDonald hits and above all 'Broadway Melody of 1936' and 'Born to Dance'. That pair foregrounded the next move forward in dance films from the Astaire-Rogers partnership: a soloist who could choreograph herself in any style and setting, from simple to 'cast of thousands'. Ellie's breakthrough makes her the true fairy godmother of MGM musicals. And the lyricist of her first hit was none other than their godfather- Arthur Freed. But in the cavalcade of talent that filled screens for the next 20 years, there would never be another Powell.

Let me be the first, I think to mention this name: JUDY. She was the best singer, and a good dancer, and a huge BOX OFFICE. Gene Kelly was an amazing dancer and his 1st film was For Me And My Gal starring Judy. Judy matched him step for step, as she coached him start to finish in his 1st film. For which he was always grateful. She was pretty good, compared to Gene's dancing, but, he didn't give her both barrels, he gave her one barrel. But, Gene always credited her for making it easy for him by guiding him along every step of the way. NO PUN INTENDED. THEY DID LOOK GOOD DANCING TOGETHER.

July 31, 2020:: I love TCM for their dedication to bringing back restored Silver screen musicals that since I was a child never get tired of viewing. Many I own & cherish. The Musical sets back in the 30s & 40s must have been as beautiful as it was when Dorothy landed in the land of Oz! I leave it to my imagination. I was told the sets were beautiful but color was very expensive. What turned it off and who's brave enough to turn it back on? It was so wonderful then. I was born in 1944. It was before TV was popular or affordable. The Moving picture theater was where I got to see Silver screen oldies. For 20 cents, I got to see two features, the world news and a cartoon. Times have changed haven't they? :o( As Bob Hope would say, "Thanks for the Memories" Karl. The Socialist are trying to overthrow our land of Oz, Keep the history fresh in their minds so they realize what they do.

Poor Donald O'Connor? No. No !. Donald was an outstandingly talented artist.! He grew up in vaudeville. He was performing from the age of 13 months. He was the consumate performer. He could do everything! - Sing, Dance, Act , Perform Comedy.! He preferred playing to LIVE audiences. He didn't really like movies as it was a static 'one off ' - he said he preferred stage and live appearances as he could perfect and improve his performances . He loved to improvise his routines. His career was spread throughout Stage , Screen , Television, Broadway, and Las Vegas cabaret shows. He was brought up to make people laugh and enjoy themselves, and that is what he did. The age of Musicals was over by the end of the 1950's. Kelly and Astaire were the musical superstars of the heyday of the 30's, 40's and 50's. By the time Donald exploded onto the scene the Studios didn't know what to do with him! Donald worked up until 4 years before he died in 2003 . He worked for 74 years ! He was the most delightful, kindest, considerate, generous, and the nicest man . You can see that in his screen persona....He was even better in real life. Don't say 'Poor Donald O'Connor ! He was a superstar !

Actually the late 40s early early 50s were a tough times for MGM. By the mid 50s, the studio system was crumbling and TV was making huge advances cutting into movie studio profits. By the end of the 50s MGM had to break away from the theaters (Lowes) in what was another blow. Everyone in the industry already knew by the mid 50s, that MGM's golden age was finished. "Once upon a time in Hollywood?" MGM was in Culver City, where I grew up. So were Selznick Studio and Desilu. It drives CC natives like me nuts when Hollywood gets all the glory after we did all the work. People in Burbank, home of Warner Brothers Pictures, probably feel the same way. OK. I'm finished. I feel better now.

Kelly and O'Conner's style was very unlike Astaire's. Less 'graceful' perhaps, but more athletic I would say. All of them amazing. Among the girl's, I just am unable to arrive at even a close three, outstanding talent. These musicals, which, as it happens where all really before my time, are something I don't believe we'll ever really see again. But then, I hope that we can say the same thing about what talent is currently creating in future generations.
