It’s funny, I immediately thought that Nick was deceptive and not genuine, because the way Joe Alwyn played Nick kind of lent this sneaky element to his conversations with Frances… it’s like a combination of charm and that level of repression and stifled romantic expression almost doesn’t make sense in one human and therefore can’t be genuine. I don’t know how else to explain it, but I found it to be the top reason I didn’t immediately connect with the series. Did anyone else have a similar reaction or know how better to describe what I was feeling there?

For me, when I was reading the book I always felt really unsure about Nick, there was something that seems quite deceptive about his passiveness, like he clearly has wants and desire but he doesn't tell Frances any of them and he just keeps her hanging and she has to keep guessing

I also felt this way, I feel like none of the cast member actually had chemistry??? Idk like her and Bobbi, Melissa and nick, none of it felt genuine

I'm reading the book now and I haven't watched the movie except a couple of here. Reading the book I also kept feeling unsure and suspicious about Nick, but then I started to realise that the book represents quite well how anyone feels in a relation: each person brings in hers/his personal insecurities and can't know what the other person is feeling. It made me think a lot, because I tend to be like all the characters in the book, taking my perspective as the correct one, which is not always true. That's something I'm appreciating about the novel: it shows how each person is a universe in itself. It also makes me reflect about what should be the best way to enter other's people world.

Yeah. Like a predatory quality to his passiveness. But then I liked him because he played back on my instincts of him.

The scene with Frances trying on his coat, when he said that it suits her, I thought to myself “yeah, I make a great lesbian”...

Very much like Normal People. You may as well have had the same actors.

Boring, boring, boring. No personality from either of them. No banter, no excitement, no chemistry. Both terribly self-aware. Very affected acting.

Why do I hate Nick so much?
@EmitopiaАй бұрын
Because he is a grown man cheating on his wife with a college student, he’s admitted to cheating on her multiple times before having a affair with Frances, He and Melissa justify his infidelity by saying he’s depressed, and he shows no growth throughout the show…

@@Emitopia When did he admit to cheating multiple times? Melissa is the one who had all the affairs
