Steven is my favourite male ballet dancer. So versatile, fluid and joyful. The sheer speed, strength and expressiveness. And the Czardas - the way he combines the ballet and tap so energetically and passionately. That's a true artist right there.

Being a classical dance examiner I have some tap friends who believe I amongst other classical folk do not appreciate tap. Personally I love it. I then show them Steven with this czardas video, sit back and watch their faces. I have always believed in the marriage of classical, jazz and tap with any genre of music to show that with careful planning it will all work together. Thank you for this lovely vid of Steven.

You've seen him as the Mad Tapper (Hatter), right? I've looked to see if he had some tap or even Irish step dancing in his background or just picked it up on the fly. He's fabulous, whichever!
@robertmcnamara54072 жыл бұрын
@@minissa2009 No I have never really seen the whole thing. I saw him tap at the Prix de Lausanne gala concert I think it was. He grew up here in Australia as a tapper, well all rounder I believe, but his ballet took the lead.
@minissa20092 жыл бұрын
@@robertmcnamara5407 Thanks for that. Now I can quit lying awake nights 🤗. He's amazingly versatile, and I didn't know he was an Aussie! One of the finest moments in my life {I know, I need to get out more} was during an evening when he was dancing SB with Sarah Lamb and was keeping up a "you are there" patter of all the backstage activity leading up to curtain. He showed some pages from Ballet Hero, a really cute Manga he was involved with. I made a comment on the hero's art work as though I were critiquing a live dancer, just being silly {great line and epaulement, needs to work on relieve or some such} and he favorite it!

My most favorite Steven McRae solo is from the finale section of Chroma. So sharp and musical. I used to watch it on loop when the ballet was first on youtube. It was taken down for years and recently resurfaced. I was ecstatic! Anyone know the solo I'm referring to?

If you watch the rehearsals for Alice in Wonderland where he played the Mad Hatter in a sequence that combines both ballet and tap, he said he found it really hard to continually switch between the two dancing styles and would mutter to himself "Ballet! Tap! Ballet! Tap!" to remind himself which one he was supposed to be doing 😅

Steven's Csardas is fine, but I keep thinking he needs a costume to really carry it off! Love his tapping choreo. The sad prince, I'll call it, I've been looking for and now here it is. Sleeping Beauty? The third has to be La Fille mal Gardee. Love the fourth episode, he is so clever! Last looks like the final pas of Nutcracker. Steven McRae is a brilliant executant!

What I really admire about Steven McRae is his dramatic talent. He becomes the role, he is totally different in a light role in Ashton's Fille than he is in the solo in Sleeping Beauty. He is fantastic in the Christmas commercial for a whiskey, and in Wheeldon's Alice as the Mad Hatter, he steals the show.
