Stevie and Caroline's interaction is so minor, but significant at the same time. They're two of the only characters in the series who say exactly what's on their mind without bullshitting, lying to themselves or acting nice to save face (Caroline kind of breaks this mold later but she's still one of the more honest characters generally speaking). He says probably the rudest thing you could possibly say to the mother of the bride at a wedding (calling Shiv a slut) and she immediately likes him for it because it's the truth and he actually had the balls to say it.

The first is just rent-seeking (You could have gotten a better price and are just leaving money on the table by not offering a lower price), but the other is adverse selection. Think of buying a used car. If you buy a used car from someone on Craigslist and the the seller smiles when you agree to a deal, what does that tell you? It for sure tells you that you offered more than the minimum he would have accepted. It also tells you that he might know something about the car that you don't that, had you known, you would not have paid the agreed-upon price.
