I loved how the show essentially had 3 finales. All in a row. One where they get to save Earth. One where they beat the Bad Place and get to go to the Good Place. One where they save the Good Place. [And one where they all return to some form of cycle.]

In a way, even in the real good place Michael was being tortured. Even the angels barely hesitated before dumping all of their problems and responsibilities onto him just like everyone else always did, tricking him into putting himself in charge of the entire realm and then literally running away.

By your thought, boredom should prevent this, by being the "down", however, it's not enough to make the alternation of good and bad emotions. The idea is that humans need sorrow to value happiness, disappointment to value hope, pain to value pleasure and so on.

Ya so the actual "good places" are the successful version of what he was trying to create. As their isnt any actually not evil or unholy people except for several dozen across the whole of human existence. Ya humanity sucks that badly. And out of the several dozen only one was begotten son (not a f up at all, no sin absolutely loving and honest).
