Anyone who is here while looking into current (2024) online esl teaching opportunities like myself ... notice that this video, as well as majority of others ive seen ... are made by esl tutors who are non native English speakers ... and obviously there is nothing wrong with that ... but after getting a few mins into the video .... and hearing the numerous gramatical errors and overall poor communication skills ... which would be the level of expertise that the student would have access to ... Surely native english speakers, with a tefl type course would be a shoe in over tutors such as the poster here ...?

A shoe in? Not really. You would think so, but tutoring companies are cheap. Over 90% of the companies out there offer low pay. I've only seen one company that pays about $18-20 /hour. The majority of companies out there offer slave wages of $5 to $10 hour or lower...

@@steve9473 yeah. a lot more profitable to hire a hundred non-native teachers who can afford to be paid $5/hr than a hundred natives who would require at least $10/hr. the native-ness of the teacher doesn't necessarily imply quality but money's always going to talk the loudest at the end of the day

The first company only accepts 4% of the applicants, the second company does not accept South Africans, which is ridiculous as a South African English is my first language. And finally the last company pays so low it ridiculous. For me personally, the recommendations are useless.

@stevenvanrensburg - Not only that, this person giving the information, is not a native English speaker, and cannot even pronounce the words correctly. As for Skyeng, it is an insult to anyone who is teaching English, to pay these disgusting rates! The cost of living is sky high in South Africa, and they expect us to work for,peanuts! We are not monkeys!

SKYENG in the video is just 1 example of foreign companies underpaying their tutors, and more and more (as a South African) I am noticing this exploitation of South Africans. Do they really consider 3 USD for teaching a 1 hour class a good rate? Have they even done their homework to see what is considered normal pay in a South AFrican teaching setting? I dont think so. I have a university degree in English and Linguistics, did my first TEFL course in 2000 and then my CELTA in 2004. I got paid 3USD in 2000 working in person at a TEFL school here. I then moved to another school that paid USD 5.5, and THAT WAS 16 YEARS AGO! What on earth makes these guys think that 3USD is a good rate for South Africans? I'm sorry, that's daylight robbery!

@Athena - I absolutely agree with you!, The companies have no idea of what the basic wage is, in South Africa, and why should a person with a degree, who is teaching, be paid,a non living wage?!?!? The companies who hire tutors, must get over themselves, and educate themselves, on what a native English speaker is! We have many native English speakers in South Africa, and just because we have eleven official languages, does not, in any way indicate, that a person is a non native English speaker. If a person says he or she is a native English speaker, he or she should be paid accordingly. The UK tutors, and the American teachers get paid far more, up to 25 dollars per hour or more! Yet, the companies hiring South African tutors, think that the tutors, need to suck it up, and work for a meagre pittance! This is totally unacceptable, and as previously mentioned, daylight robbery or slave wages! South African tutors do not need to put up with this, but apply to companies, who pay a decent hourly rate, in line with what they would pay a UK based tutor, or an American tutor. Over and above this, the native English speakers in South Africa, have excellent pronunciation, and a pleasant neutral accent, and are well versed in the language. This can only benefit potential students. For this reason, I think the companies ought to have a good hard rethink about the wages they pay South African tutors, and pay them according to what they pay other native English speakers. It is way overdue! More often, than not, the companies also completely overlook South Africa, and do not include it as one of the countries, from which they hire.

It's robbery in the USA too. Especially because the cost of living is much higher here. That will barely buy you a small trip to the store once a month. And you'll never be able to afford rent.

Specifically, they accept applicants from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
