I use the Shimano EH500 pedals. They are SPD on one side and flat on the other. Best of both worlds.

Same, heard people complaining they're harder to clip into but I've had very few issues (they're heavier on one end so the clip side is almost always up when you reach for it). They're my first clip-in pedals and I had no problems learning to clip in with them, and I can still use the bike for commuting in sneakers too.

I only just started to use SPD pedals and have the Shimano PD-ED500 light action pedals. These are the best and safest for beginners in urban situations, when you need to get your feet off the pedals. I used the Shimano PD-ME700 and didn't get on with them at first. Also they were heavier than the PD-ED500 pedals. The cleats that come with the PD-ED500 are multi-angle release, while the PD-ME700 comes with single angle release cleats. When you are in busy places like London, you don't want to be caught out!

I’ve had the same shimano ultegra ( excuse the spelling) pedals for 6 years and they have been absolutely fantastic just gotten regular full service on the bike every 2 years and been able to upgrade other components and gotten me through 2 different frames on the same pedals there still going strong

Want to second what Nick says about the Look version of SPD pedals. They have a better platform, and combined with the shimano adapter (3 bolt to 2 bolt) on my road shoes, gives me a seemingly wider and more stable surface to push against with every pedal stroke

Second this. I have the Look SPD pedals too. Been fine on my gravel bike. Also, when I swap road wheels in, have been great for longer road rides too.

Ride spd on road. Won't go back to flats unless i have to. I feel way more secure on descents when clipped in. Definitely more connected to the bike. Not as worried about my foot slipping off the pedal if there are bumps that i can't avoid

New clipless pedal user here. I’m running Crankbrothers Double shot 1 pedal. I like it because I can run the spd shoes or if I’m just going to run around the corner I can wear regular sneakers . One side clips one side flat pedals.

The XT SPD pedals have a pretty nice, big platform. If I did gravel, I’d probably put another pair of those on that bike.

Stamp 1 pedals on Wide Vans slip on is my favorite. You can find both on sale for 20 bucks in the winter, no need really to go beyond this.

SPD for me on all my bikes road and MTB. They are also super easy to service and last for ever. Another bonus is your mates are also most likely to be using them ( in the MTB world) so you can jump on and test ride their bikes.

Proper flats and mtb shoes off road, mix between spds and Look on road. Couldn't care less about efficiency, but there is a feeling you get on clipless that isn't there on flats

Halfords team spd pedals and decathlon RC500 gravel shoes are my go to for the good bikes. Raceface Chesters on the commuter (only worth getting if they are on promo for €30 on Amazon though....)

SPD on all my bikes. They are just so easy to live with. I have two pairs of shoes: rigid sole for max effort rides and flexible for social rides. SPD-R is a disaster for newbies and cafe/leisure rides. I’ve seen too many ‘once a week on the club run’ riders fumbling and hesitating at busy junctions while they try to engage SPD-R.

I bought a used 90s road bike as my first bike since I was a kid. It had SPD pedals and I have no issues as a new rider. Its helped by the fact I cant remove the pedals since the last owner cross threaded the pedals on both sides 😅, but my first beginner shoe as been nice and in a years ill update to better shoes to gain the ability to walk easier off the bike

Shout out to the company 'Pedal plate', who make plastic inserts for clipless pedals. It means you can ride with your regular, comfortable shoes without having to change pedals.

Not all SPD pedals are double sided, I have a pair of XLC PD-S05, very light (128g per pedal) which are single sided.

For it is the situation you ride in. If you ride allot in an urban situation I prefer flats. You can simply react faster. With long countryside rides I prefer clicks, but when the rides are above the 150km I prefer flats again. For the simple reason, your sometimes to tired to disengage easily….

If you’re commuting, just get toe clips or foot retention straps! I love the feel of riding with foot retention, my riding is much more efficient

Those are dangerous you can break your shinbone in half. I'd only use those if you were riding fixed gear freestyle.

Re pedals - just get a whole Mountain Bike! You'll be much happier!😂 Happy Christmas to all rodies - hope you keep safe all next year - I wouldn't want to face modern traffic - I feel much safer on a downhill ! Regards Tony Sadler South Wales UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🎄🍻 Oh, if you want an MTB pedal take a look at "HT" ridden their flats for years - brilliant performer's, without issues, fully serviceable.

Flat mountain bike pedals with mountain bike shoes. Too many traffic lights and too many pub to be messing about clipping in and out. When the experienced racer takes away slower than me at the traffic lights... I don't want to be messing about clipping in when I need to be concentrating and dodging traffic through a junction. And make sure that they have reflectors (to be legally compliant) if you want to ride on the public road in the UK in the dark.

Clipless is overrated. Go. Good flat mtb pedals with spikes + hard sole minimal shoes is good enough for 80% of casual riders, who don't care too much about the absolute best power, and the highest possible efficiency. It's been shown in many YT videos that the benefits of clipless only come through in sprints and hill climbs.
@Wichyn1
@Wichyn1 Ай бұрын
Yes, I've have virtually non difference in terms of power when gettin back to flat pedals. Although I have to say that even though might just a feeling, when raining I feel more confident with clipless, on flats I'm a little worried I'd slip from the pedal

For real. Bike companies are constantly shooting themselves in the foot by putting the worst possible dollar store grips, seats and postage stamp pedals on complete bikes so that new riders have a bad experience. Nice big flats with some set screws feel so nice with a pair of Vans or basic flat sole shoes. I'm sure some people love clips but the fact that there are mountain, road and gravel clipless pedals when your feet do not touch the ground kind of show what a scam some parts of the cycling industry really are.

Absolutely the truth! The vast majority of “cyclists” should just have their bikes ready to ride without having to wear “cyclists” shoes! Bike riding should be about having fun! Clipless is a waste of money and cause beginners to fall and get hurt and quit before they even get started

Agree. Especially on routes with multiple stop lights, high car traffic and intersections, clipless became a hassle.

The vast majority of cyclists have no need for “cyclists” shoes that clip into “cyclists”pedals. It’s a complete waste of your money. Get some good flats with sufficient grip/spikes. Use wide toe box comfortable shoes! Seriously you will ride so much more and “win” all the races that you never enter anyway because you’re ready to ride basically all the time!! People have to quit buying into the BS that they have to dress like a “cyclist” to be a cyclist. Find a bike you love to ride and set it up to ride it anytime you have the free time to ride it! Spend your money on the bike..specially the tires and wheels and even the bars. The only cyclists gear you should possibly waste money on is something to help you be more visible to drivers…otherwise throw on some workout clothes and just friggin ride more!!
