Hey PF, I used to drive Caterpillar 777 rock hauling trucks in a mining company. Every December, the maintenance crew would start winter rebuild services and to remove the giant lug nuts, they would heat them with an oxygen acetylene torch and then immediately hit them with ice water. The expansion and contraction breaks the rust very quickly. Usually one time around would loosen the nuts. Excellent vid and a very methodical approach as usual. Appreciate your time and effort.

@ProjectFarm5 жыл бұрын
Thank you!
@BigBear--8 ай бұрын
Well consider that these nuts were originally only torqued down to 80 Ft-Lbs. If they were torqued down with more force, more force would be required to get them off, that difference in ft-lbs would grow, and be even more significant. Also depending on the tool/wrench used, it could mean the difference in potentially breaking something like a ratchet vs not breaking it. Also he starts out with new bolts. If these were bolts that have been rusting for years, it could mean an even larger difference in force required for removal. Along with the fact that the heads might be even more worn, and more likely to strip, so less force might be the difference between stripping the head, or getting it off. The point is, you're always better off using something vs nothing. Also more time for penetration is always better. These things can come in super clutch in more sensitive areas/projects. Where a broken bolt, stripped head, etc...could be the difference between a 15 minute job or a 4 day pain in the ass project.

Wire brushing then oiling the corroded accessible area of the threads helps remove the nut once you have it loose, though. Two other methods are the Blue Wrench and the Weld. Both work wonders...but not for exhaust bolts. Doze are de work of de Debbil. Another method which works on really beefy situations is to hit the bolt head/nut with a pneumatic hammer.

I like your attention to detail in all of your experiments. Using the same environment, same measuring devices, applying the product in the same way, etc. The only changing part is the product. It makes for really good data collection and trustworthy results. I am in the process of removing an exhaust and purchased Liquid Wrench based on your experiments. Zero snapped bolts so far.

The data might already be on several different videos, but as an owner of firearms there are tons of different lubricants out there designed to "protect" your investment. I think you could setup an interesting test involving a bunch of different firearm and non-firearm specific spray lubricants to find out which one works best to prevent corrosion (especially with your worst case scenario metal eating spray bottle you got there haha). You could even do it bracket style like the oils, if there is enough interest or data points to cover.

Two suggestions. 1.) Since price point determines how much product gets used why not apply a cost-weighted amount of product to the seized nuts? So a lot more Liquid Wrench. 2.) Determining how to reduce the torque required to close to 80 ft. lb. Which strategy works best. How much do multiple applications over many days help? Torque after 1 hr, 6 hr, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days. I loved that you used a control for the 1 hour and the 1 day marks. Even better that they averaged about the same. Thank you!

judging by the wear scar, seafoam looks like it might be a contender for an oil replacement test
@ariesmight69782 жыл бұрын
Seafoam did resist the heat and pressure tests. Seafoam may not be viscos enough for a stock oil pump. So a small engine test in a four stroke motorcycle. Would be required, or due to its high lubrication capacity. Work as a two stroke engine oil. But then again, seafoam resists burning in high temperatures.

Wow. I can't imagine how much work you put into those tests and put it all in such a nice video format, I don't believe everyone appreciate that plus you're so modest about it. Thanks a million for saving me money and time on buying the right product the first time. Suggestion: (since you asked so nicely) re-testing lots of your products after the product sits on a shelf or in a vehicle for a long period of time after initial testing, by testing in regular intervals, to test the longevity of the products. You always use New products. I'd like too see how long they stay "the best". Here I go praising your work and dedication and I'm asking for a lot more out of you. Wish I was in a position to fund you. Thanks again from an old poor man which is a little bit richer because of you.

Years ago I used to work for Ford. They had their own stuff. Ford Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor. I don't know if they still make it, but it was the shiznit. Lol I used it to remove a rear sway bar from a car at the junkyard that was completely rusted and sitting for years. I recovered every piece of hardware thanks to using it. It had graphite and foamed up. A drippy nasty mess, but worked great. I wonder how it would compare up with these.

I tried Seafoam Deep Creep. I knew I would have difficulty removing the rear shocks on my 2014 Sorento because they are notorious for seizing onto the bottom spindle. So,three times a day for 4 days I sprayed copious amounts of Deep Creep all over the lower mountings of the old shocks. I still ended up cutting the shocks off with a with an angel grinder. Then I had to cut the outer sleeve and chisel that off,burn the rubber off under that and then cut a notch into the inner sleeve and chisel that off. After all of that I inspected the spindle and surprise, surprise there was no sign of any of the penetrating oil inside any of those layers. It was a waste of $20 for the Seafoam and a waste of time sliding under the vehicle 3 times a day to apply the product. It also left bad oil stains on my asphalt driveway which I am still trying to eradicate. Threads or no threads I have never seen any brand of penetrating oil live up to it's claims. Extreme heat and the right tools are the only tried and true solutions to rusted nuts,bolts or fittings and I personally won't waste another second on any of those products.

Thanks, Project Farm, for your excellent video regarding the best penetrating oil(s) on the market specifically Seafoam's Deep Creep vs. Gibbs vs. Liquid Wrench! Based on Deep Creep's ability to handle the most heat while still being relatively safe from catching on fire I would guess that Deep Creep would be a much safer choice in lubricating heat shield & manifold bolts regarding rust protection?

Your comparison is excellent and helpful. If I would like to give you a suggestion is to include a test on evaporation after 24 hours. I haven't see that. True, most of us would like products to work instantly but the truth is that sometimes we must let time works its magic. I have used many of these penetrating oils and most evaporate after a few hours.

I think the reason I personally have always had better luck with Liquid Wrench then other penetrating oils is because of its low price, I tend to use a much greater volume which increases effectiveness in most cases. Because of the vast pricing difference between Liquid Wrench and some of the competitors, it would be interesting to see your tests using varied product volumes determined using the volume:cost ratio. In this case Liquid Wrench would get at least 3 times as much product per application and in my guess be the clear winner. I only point this out because of 1)The extreme cost difference and 2)The close results. The last thing I will say is that some of your comparisons could maybe benefit by giving the clearly more important tests a higher weighting so to speak. I've seen most of your product comparisons if not all of them. I too am a tester but I test electrical hardware and software applications for a living, so I often need to be very particular, but for your format I think you have the perfect time/explanation/testing/review balance and do a TREMENDOUS job. Helping us to use the best products for the job, increasing GDP, and driving competition between product manufactures, your work benefits society GREATLY and I just hope you realize how important and awesome you are. Many many thanks

Be interested to see a followup test for these three with the numbers for each penetrant -and- heat applied to the nuts, as well as a control just heat application to rusted nuts and bolts to see how the application of heat changes the torque values necessary for breaking rusted bolts loose. Maybe even a comparison of heat values, to see if more is better, or if there's an asymptotic level at which heat becomes a diminishing return.
