These were in my opinion the best mods you could do for your 22R/E motor. They didn't break the bank, and the overall health of the engine and performance was noticable. I love these motors to death, and this helped my camper immensely.
Here is the mods from LCE Performance.

Here is an awesome trick that got my clutch to work when I was stranded in my motorhome in an isolated area far away from anyone. I could not get any more adjustment on the clutch adjustment threaded rod under the dash on my 1984 toyota mini motorhome. I could not get the clutch pedal to travel enough to allow the transmission to go into first gear on my manual 4 speed transmission. I needed the clutch slave cylinder to travel further to release the clutch disc. I thought about what I had available in the vehicle, then I came up with two options. I already had the parts needed on my valve cover to do the trick, which really fixed the problem, and it has worked great every since, (and it has been working for years). The first option was to remove one of those acorn type nuts from the top of the valve cover on the 22R engine. I used that acorn type nut on the rod coming out of of the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder to give it more travel. Fortunately this worked so my second option of starting the engine with the transmission already in first gear, by having the starter drag the vehicle forward until the engine started. I put the acorn type valve cover nut on the end of the rod coming out of the clutch slave cylinder. I put the rod that came from the hydraulic slave cylinder into the open end of the acorn nut , then I put then the round part of the acorn nut into the dimple in the metal lever that swivels into the hogs head which moves the throw-out bearing against the pressure plate o release the clutch disc. The acorn type nut gave the slave cylinder the travel distance that it needed to work properly again. Later on, when I was able to purchase a new slave cylinder, it would not work, so I put the acorn nut on the rod again. The acorn nut does the trick, and it has been working perfectly for several years without any problems.

Best 3 mods was the LCE RV, street header and 4:56 gears for my 1986 4runner. Total night and day for my 22re. I can literally cruise and take on hills with no issues. Thanks for doing this video to validate what makes 22r engines happy campers. I do recommend a 3 core aluminum radiator if you want to get more cooling out of it. Explore that if I didn't hear you correctly on if you did that MoD also.

I did similar modifications to my 86 pickup. The entire build consisted of this: Weber carb Offenhauser intake manifold Lce header RV camshaft Oversized valves 2mm I believe And a full tune up consisting of water and oil pump, timing chain, distributor cap, spark plug and wires, etc. Truck is an absolute monster now. I have no hesitation In telling you that it would hold its own against my old 98 Tacoma that was equipped with the 3.4 and manual transmission. This built 22r is right there in the same ballpark. My build wasn’t cheap, but if you have one of these 22r or 22re engines, and you want power, you do not have to do a swap. You can get power out of them.

@@SG_88 I can’t empirically answer that unfortunately. The truck isn’t a rock crawler, but I do take it on some technical trails. I’ve never had it cut out or suffer at angles, but I’ve never had it on anything incredibly steep. Moderately steep, but nothing wild.

I've never really had wild gains from upgrades on the 22R and RE engines I've owned over the years. Best bit of advice is knowing what they can and can't do. It'll never knock your socks off but they are definitely tanks. A baseline tune up is a great way to get it dialed in, the REs have their TPS sensor go out of adjustment sometimes and just getting that, clean injectors, fresh plugs and wires is a great way to get them dialed in. I put a "hi flo" head in from 22RE Performance coupled with an upgraded cam and shorty LCE header and it did help wake up that engine a bit. Never screamed but even with super tall rear end gears I could chirp the tires shifting to second.

Make sure your rotors are thick enough, then do some more agressive "street/track" pads. I like Hawk>EBC>PowerStop>Centric>everyone else. Brembo are good but wear too quickly, Better Pads and good tires make better braking. For rotors Centric blanks (many other companies rebrand centric and may be cheaper on occasion) are best value for quality. Don't waste money buying BIGGER brakes unless you are boiling your brake fluid.

I think everyone hates the 3vz because of the way they made the exhaust on the passenger side go up and over the bellhousing and into the driver side exhaust which creates a back pressure in the number 6 piston and it blows headgaskets. This is my second or third watch of this video. I have a 22re 2nd gen 4runner on 33’s. It has a bumper, winch, rock sliders, lift, and 4.88 gears. I am wishing for more power, but I’ve also neglected my engine a bit(it does have a new head gasket and machined head to its Final Cut before its scrap, so higher compression?). I just did an oil change with 5w30 Valvoline restore and protect(amazing oil) and it already feels happier. My prior oil change was cheap oil and marvel mystery oil. Just ordered a redline 261 crawler/torker cam and I wanted to know if I was wasting my money. Nope! Sounds like I’ll love it when I install it.

You got lucky with your 3.Slow(3VZ)...more than half had bad passenger side heads due to a flawed manufacturing process. Word has it the pour on those cast heads was done incorrectly making them structurally flawed...basically there was a 99% chance they would crack and leak antifreeze into the #4 and 6 cylinders on the right side eventually after enough heat cycles. It would manifest as a blown cylinder head gasket. I got a '90 4runner dirt cheap because of this issue. I swapped in a 3.4 (5VZ) in and never looked back, it was a direct fit due to the donor rig being a T100 and NOT a Tacoma model. Didn't even have to swap the oil pan! That 5VZFE was a beast!!! Back then they were easy to find, (2005) nowadays it is sought after and super hard to find(at least in Alaska, LOL) Thanks for the info on this 22R/E stuff. I have a free 1991 4x4 rig given to me because the 22R/E block got ventilated, so going for a swap in of a free 22R(just had to get it out of the woods and fight off a sasquatch for it) and am planning on putting the FI on it from the blown engine.

no computers on the mid 80"s toyota mini motorhomes, so I can do all of my own repairs, and the parts companies are overstocked on the parts so the prices are affordable. The insurance on a toyota mini motorhome here in nebraska is easily affordable. I could not afford the insurance on a regular vehicle on my social security income so I always drive this old toyota mini motorhome. The miles per gallon is great, the insurance is cheap, the license plates are cheap, the parts are not costly, I can do all of the repairs myself, the vehicle is tough and the transmission and engine are dependable. 162,000 miles and still running, without any squeaks or rattles. A very sound vehicle, reliable, affordable and dependable. Simple to work on. Great for a person living on a fixed low income.

Hooked headers make a header for a couple of hundred bucks. Another thing you can do is pull all vacuum lines except for the break boost and plug up the vacuum holes (if your carbonated) Also, a snow mobile open filter will fit the throat of the carbonator.exactly. when I put the snow mobile air filter on mine I only had to use the top plate became the bottom rubber of the filter has a groove that fits the carborator top. Also the valves, run them on the tighter end. I would adjust mine where it was alittle tough to pull out the feeler gauge.

I also found out that the rear end differential with the dually tires on my 1984 toyota mini motorhome was a rear end purchased from Winnebago for the toyota mini-motorhomes, which is the rear end made for those large Winnebago motorhomes. The original toyota mini motorhome rear end differential had problems, perhaps from people putting too much weight into the motorhome, so toyota had a recall to replace the rear end with the heavier duty Winnebago rear end. This is why my 1984 Dolphin mini motorhome with the 4 speed manual transmission, travels 7 mph faster when traveling at a highway speed then what the speedometer registers. I have to glance at the speedometer often in a city and subtract that 7 mph, so I do not get a speeding ticket. The toyota mini motorhomes (that are newer than mine) which have the V6 engine from the mid 90"s also have the Winnebago rear end, but with an automatic transmission, so those vehicles actually travel slower then the speedometer registers, so the driver wonders why everyone is passing his vehicle.

Question. Did the headers come with an oxygen sensor bung. So you can use an air fuel ratio gauge to look at the air fuel ratio at 1400 to 1600 rpm steady throttle to see if the idle feed restrictions are sized correctly. At 2700 to 3000 rpms to see if the main jet is too rich or lean. After you get both of those dialed in. Then test drive at 65 to 70 to see if the overall air fuel ratio is rich or lean. Change just the secondary main jet and test drive again. This is the modern way to calibrate carbs. Changing to headers really throws off idle transition. Primary and secondary jetting. Headers usually lean out stock jetting. Jets are available. Or use them from a junk carb. Drill them 0 001" at a time and retest as described above. A number 61 to 80 drill bit set is not expensive. About the size of a book of matches. A micrometer that reads 0.001" will let you know where you started.

Spoke to my electrician about the change over to 50 amps Was able to match up a transfer switch with my current load center and put a box in ahead of it so it only gets 30 A but now I have lots of extra breakers if I ever wanted to power a small village. PEx A some of the best pipe you can buy I bought all the fittings and the special expander tool off eBay not a drip. It's bulletproof propane conversion bought a couple of tank hangers cut a hole in one of the compartments put in a new regulator tested it for leaks done these things are so easy to work on If you make a mistake it's easy to fix.

Was cool with the rotary but if any one knows rotary engines, you better have a second waiting g on a engine stand cause you will definitely blow it up. It does alright most of the time, good low end torque, but at times it seems underpowered and it just seems like I have no reserve power when I’m hauling things. I am definitely going to try a street header to get a little more power out of the engine. It would at least give it a little more power to haul things.

My toyota Dolphin mini motorhome is all stock and is a1984, having 362,000 miles, and I have to drive it at 53 mph, so I do not open- up that second barrel on the carburetor, which would really hurt my 19 mpg gas milage. How I discovered that mph is by experimentation on long travels . drove at a specific chosen mph until I refueled. Then I calculated the mpg for the miles driven and the fuel consumed. I did this on many different chosen speeds and refuelings to find the mph that provided the best mpg. Driving faster then 53 mph would lower my miles per gallon. I do not know what exact rpm would opens up that second ventura on the stock carburator. When this vehicle was manufactured in 1983 for sale on the market in 1984, the national speed limits in the entire USA back then was regulated to 55 mph, so the vehicle was geared for that mph. To get a good mpg, a person would need to know at what rpm does your carburetor open-up that other barrel on the carb and engage the additional jets in the other ventura to flow more fuel and lower your mpg.

Toyota bought the Winnebago rear end differential to put into the toyota rear ends, because people would put too much weight in the motohromes and this would cause the rear end to fail, so toyota had a recall and replaced the original toyota rear end with the full size Winnebago rear end with the dually wheel. It is a rear end made for the full size Winnebago motorhomes, but is geared differently then the toyota motohomes were geared. Toyoyta does not have parts for that Winnebago rear end differential. I purchased the axle seals from Napa auto parts. I have seen some of these toyota mini motorhomes that were not taken to the toyota dealership for the recall, and the vehicle does not have the Winnebago rear end with the dually tires. You can easily see this when the vehicle does not have the dually wheels. My 1984 toyota mini motorhome was manufactured when the national speed limit in the USA was regulated to 55 mph, so the 4 cylinder engine with the 4 speed manual transmission will have the speedometer displaying 55 mph, but the vehicle is actually going 7 mph faster then what the speedometer states. I have to be careful in cities to not exceed the posted speed limit. The toyota mini motohomes manufactured in the 90"s with the V6 engine and the automatic transmission actually travel slower then the speedometer reports. The driver wonders why everyone is passing him.

I've restored 4 of these Toyota RVs. 3 had the 22re. One had the 22re/auto combo. A tune up is all it needed. With the EFI system properly operating that thing pulled right up hills. Got up to 70-75 quickly. From a dead stop it would just jack rabbit off the line which was surprising with all that weight on the back. One of them had the 3.0 V6 and a 5spd. Plenty of power but not THAT much more than the little 22re that's running properly. I have an 86 4runner with 400k on the 22re. It was poorly maintained by the previous owner so it ran horribly when I picked it up. Barely ran. Replaced a lot of things and got it running properly and now it's running great.
