In 1985 I had a 1960's Beetle. Bought for 500 DM. It was kind of a semi convertible. Huge fun. Sadly already many broken parts. I refused to give it away, but finally I did because I didn't have time for all the repairs. Still good memories...

Founder and inventor Vincent Bendix filed for a patent for the Bendix drive on May 2, 1914. The drive engages the starter motor with an internal combustion engine and is still used on most automobiles today. Bendix initially began his new corporation in a hotel room in Chicago in 1914 with an agreement with the struggling bicycle brake manufacturing firm, Eclipse Machine Company of Elmira, New York. Bendix granted permission to his invention which was described as "a New York device for the starting of explosive motors." This company made a low cost triple thread screw which could be used in the manufacture of other drive parts.

Hey there! I own and fly a Chief. The starter you saw is the "McDowell" starter, rare but very cool! As to your other question, no these planes don't do well at high altitudes. I've had mine up to 9500 but it was just mushing around. 5000 - 6000 would be reasonable but above 8k a takeoff would get sketchy in my opinion.

I hear 50/50. That it can be done. The other 50 says it's terrifying or nearly impossible at this altitude. So I'm always curious.

Bring extra points, extra belts and extra cannister of gas, fire extinguisher, a stick to dip in your gas tank because it has no gas gauge. My 67 doesn’t. I toolbox, satellite phone for when you don’t have reception and you have broken down. Etc. etc. etc..

I have 2005 620 variant of it and I have to say it was love on the first sight..that bike is sexy af.. Im small king as well and this bike is comfy.. few times I rode It 1000 kilometers (600miles for my burger eating friends) in one day and I was still fresh.. bought it for 2000 ish $ and 17K miles on the clock so almost brand new and still 20y old... I did valve adjustments and timing belts... Mr Drifto change them pls according to user manual it is every 12k or two years...Electrical.. yes my alternator died almost instantly after buying the bike :D what I saw on the forums alternators or regulators are going bad every 20k miles... my suspect is gunk in connector between regulator and alternator so check it and clean it :)

What a great goal! Doubtful the city has a whole lot to spend for this on a continuing basis, but should be easy to raise funds from pilots with articles in aviation mags and websites with links for info and donations, Go Fund Me, etc…. Many aviators will want to stop here to check it out. There is a lot of great and interesting history in that region.
