This is really interesting, thank you. It's always interesting to see how roses fare in other people's gardens. What works for one doesn't for someone else, particularly smell!! I find Eustacia Vye and Boscobel wonderful. Love Lark Ascending too because it gets hips, as does one of my top three roses, Tottering by Gently, which just does its thing in a corner and is so lovely at dusk when the pale lemon colour stands out. Roald Dahl too ... love him!!

I enjoy your enthusiasm, your garden and your roses are very lovely. I agree once Eden starts doing her thing it’s hard not to be drawn in by her blooms. I hope to be able to purchase her again. I moved across the country and left mine and many other great roses behind. I took cuttings but lost everything when the temps were in the negatives. It’s ok because I get to start the rose garden all over so hopefully lots of roses I’ve never grown before. Thanks again I enjoyed the tour and your thoughts on each variety.

Hi jade. I’m not making videos at this moment in time but will gladly try and tell you about it. My maid of Kent this will be its 4th summer. Difficult to say how tall it has grown with the way in which I’ve trained it, but id suggest 30- 40ft. Which includes a few twists and turns in the pliable canes. It will pretty much cover the front of a house if you wished. I can’t remember what size they claim it grows but mine has exceeded it considerably. A lovely large group of small clustered flowers that I don’t get scent from. Very healthy. Strong grower and a truly fantastic display when in flower. Now the downside and you have to bear in mind this is just me and my rose. The breeder happens to be my local garden centre and they state it’s a repeat flower that repeats very well throughout the summer. I haven’t had much luck on that front. The first year it was once flowering. Second year again once flowering so I spoke to the breeder asking there advice. They advised that I prune it back hard which I did. But the following year again it flowered only the once for me. I spoke to them again with my situation earlier this year and they are puzzled saying that even if I didn’t prune it won’t help but reflower!!!! so this year they have asked that I just dead head without pruning. And this I have done. I haven’t pruned this year at all. I will just dead head when the time comes. That said for me it has acted like a well behaved rambler with such a magnificent display that lasts a good 4 weeks. The fact it might not reflower for me it’s staying just for that. But I do suspect this rose should repeat very well. I don’t doubt the breeder at all. But this particular rose has been in the ground for some time now I don’t want to replace it with another. Mine gets full morning sun from pretty much sun rise until midday. I hope this helps a little.

I could have watched for two hours. Thank you very much for sharing. Queen of Sweden was already on my list to purchase, but she’s been moved to the top, along with Eustacia Vye. Do you plan to train Amadeus to wind horizontally along the trellis to promote flowering along the canes? I agree with your observations of Iceberg. I planted two last year, and they are underwhelming to say the least. I’m replacing them with New Dawn and Colette. My favorite DA this year, and last year, is Desdemona. She is never without flowers, always the healthiest, and strong, mostly upright growth.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the lovely comment. Yes I hope Amadeus can reach that top trellis to then train along horizontally above that window. I have a white climber the other side now and hopefully they can meet on that same trellis. And I think you’ll be very happy with your new roses. I can certainly recommend both. New dawn I have seen and it’s fantastic. This year I couldn’t decide between Desdemona or Claire Austin. I went with Claire Austin and have to say I may have made a mistake. Personally I find CA a little flaccid. Good growth but the flowers are pretty heavy. I hope age will stiffen her up a bit. Thanks very much for commenting and thanks for dropping by.

I meant to mention that Desdemona has a lovely scent as well. Not as good as some of my others, like Princess Alexandria of Kent, and Lady of Shallot, but in my top 5. PAK is also a very upright rose in my garden, and the bloom as well as the color are outstanding.

What a lovely graden! Thank you for inviting us:) As for black spot - in my conutry we are not allowed to spray, meaning we must try other ways. I use something called Feed and Shine once a week, it´s a foilar fertilizer with good oils and sea weed (I think) that is supposed to also prevent fungal diseases. I´ve used it for several years and I´m very pleased with it - LOTS of flowers and very little black spot despite weeks of pouring some summers (I live in Sweden):) I think it is available in your country too so you could check it out. I have not tried it myself, but there is also trichoderma that I think you put in the ground or spray on the roses, it´s quite popular in Sweden and something I´ve been recommended to try several times. However, you can´t use trichoderma and Feed and shine at the same time. Just wanted to let you know there are alternatives to chemicals that might help:) And I agree with the comment about Desdemona - wonderful rose!! First year and +50 buds - despite sun only for 5 hours and the fact it´s been pouring the last two weeks and only 15 degrees :( The first flower opened this week and it´s SO lovely and smells fantastic!

Nice talk through, I just got an Eden rose 88 a few days ago from c and k jones roses, late in the season tho'. My iceberg flowers well but also black spot ridden. I've still got my eye out for amadeus ☺️. I have seen queen of sweden recommended elsewhere as a better rain tolerant one also its one for cut flowers. Not surprising given its upright growth and taller stems; almost like regimented soldiers. An instagramer I follow had said the best rose is the one currently flowering 😆🤣.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 3 жыл бұрын
Yay really glad you got Eden rose 88. Be very interesting to see what you have to say about it. Some of the videos look fantastic with many many flowers and strong growth. But mine has definitely stuck still. I’m not sure if it’s transplant shock it’s going through and perhaps it’s a rose that doesn’t take too well to having it’s roots disturbed while being transplanted (which would explain the other comments I have seen on newer roses. So if you haven’t transplanted yours yet I’d be careful of the roots. I’d want them suckers tighter in the pot without too much disturbance. When I potted mine the roots and soil around them were pretty crumbley. Hopefully we will get to see yours. ;)

Hi again Michele, Queen of Sweden done fantastic for me that first year. Many flushes and lots of flowers. That particular year It was a wet year also with lots of rain. And queen of Sweden does well in the wet weather and or strong winds. Eustacia Vye not so much. However this summer just gone queen of Sweden didn’t do as well for me. First of all it was much much drier giving other roses the chance to shine better. Also queen of Sweden in my humble opinion is best planted next to a raised pathway so you can look down on the upward facing flowers. If you have an area like that in your garden I doubt you’ll be dissapointed. Eustacia Vye is best front of border with its shorter height and fragrance. But queen of Sweden definitely has a place in my garden for the wetter summers and longer duration of flowers. I just hope next year she does better for me. Thanks

@@Jay_Jay squire’s black gold.. ( rose tree & shrub ) compost is the best ever.. but..the traditional compost is good too or any good company’s .. when planting always give it 2 hands full of fish with compost mixed in.. now give it ( top dressing ) of compost & fish both couple of handfuls every two wks. & water it in thoroughly & your sad roses right now will get life into them & guaranteed flower plenty till December ( i worked at a garden centre for 23 yrs. )

Jay......I would strongly recommend 'Roald Dahl' from DA. Currently got about 70 flowers on 2nd flush. Been amazing every year for flowering. Mine is now 4 years old in a large pot. Others in my family have bought it after seeing it.
