It is a sad situation, but that is the way it is...a bushknife is a part of their everyday life, and serves as both a weapon and a tool for gardening. Rural villagers always carry one with them.

@@lifeinpapuanewguinea Thanks for explaining. After watching some nature videos I'm stunned at the natural beauty of PNG but also stunned at how unsafe it is there.

@@nandorblue Thank you! Yes, PNG is a very beautiful place, and I wouldn't say it is unsafe.... Most visitors are usually welcomed heartily into family homes, both in urban areas and in rural villagers by PNG locals and can visit around freely, but of course, with a local guide. It is unsafe inasmuch as the natural environment, weather and lack of development and government services is concerned but still you can get by with the assistance of a local guide. In terms of crime, maybe we can compare the crime rate in Port Moresby (or PNG as a whole) to New York city or any other major metropolis to understand how safe it is here. PNG has received so much negative publicity from the media which thrives on negativity and bad news for profit that it has a tainted image, however, many individual visitors have left our shores with a great experience and fond memories!
