Love your reviews thanks again. My favorite edc this year (2016) same as last : Spyderco: Manix 2 translucent blue..beefy leaf shaped blade with light weight and resistent Spyderco, Endura (consistent since 94) the Endura model is awesome. Tops Mil-spie folder...solid quality. Benchmade Mchenry one of the best, love it...I have more but those are my frequent carry.

Great video. Love your "Best of ___" compilations. Helps to remember items that I may have viewed on your channel and others, that I forgot about...as in..."I was going to buy that!" Question, though...about Victorinox Swiss Army products? I suppose my choices below could cross the line into the "multi-tool" category, but though I have a Leatherman Wave, and love it, I tend to find that when I need a set of pliers or small wrench...I almost always dig around in my tool box to get a better fit and grip on what ever needs wrench or plier attention. I can't be alone with that scenario. I have a tool box at home, and in my 4Runner, a small on-the-go all in one tool kit like they sell in the front of Lowes/Home Depot. So, I got to a point where I drifted away from EDC of my traditional plier based multi-tool. Now, I have 2 pretty cheap folders that I like and use. So, my question -- Why do you guys tend to avoid Swiss Army/Victorinox products? (At least for a more 70/30 urban vs field use consideration; despite what we men might prefer, we don't actually live in the woods 70% of the time). I have 2 Swiss Army folders that I never leave home without: 1. Classic SD: (very small; key size) $10-15: It is on my key ring that I open all letters with, minor scissors for work that doesn't require sheers, nail file with small but handy flathead, tweezer and toothpick...so, I end up using it literally every single day. 2. And, a Swiss Army One-Hand Nomad Victorinox Grip $35-40: It ended up becoming my EDC by total accident, as a gift from the wife for "picnics", by her philosophy of use...turns out, not only good for picnics and hiking, but about everything else...and CHEAP!!! (and, it bumped my Leatherman from "EDC" to "EDCC", as in, every day in my truck "C"enter "C"onsole"). Tools: -- Large, TOUGH, liner-lock 3.5" serrated (an option I chose), that I use for everything from food prep to minor sawing of limbs in the yard...cutting open boxes...and it is stainless steel, so not too much maintenance. And, it is bigger and thicker than my L-Wave blade! -- Liner-lock bottle opener with large flathead/light use pry tool, etc...multi uses a week. -- Can opener used multiple times a week for lunch at work (tuna; soup), with small flathead, -- Corkscrew I use for red wine at least once a week (Italian wife), -- Awl that is very capable, but seldom used. Your thoughts?

I consider a good Scout Utility Knife ( sometimes called a GI knife , or camp knife ) to be the best pocket knifes around . Before my wife and I were married over 20 years ago , I found a 1968 U.S. Camillus military issue pocket knife in a trash pile . I have been carrying that knife everyday for over 20 years and I can't tell you how often it has come in handy . For instance , we were at a friends camp for a BBQ one time and he forgot the can opener for the beans at home , my Camillus GI knife saved the day buy using it's can opener . I have tons of stories like that . If your looking for a high quality Scout Utility Knife Broker makes one of the best . www.boker.de/us/pocket-knife/boker/classic-pocket-knife/110182HH.html.

I don't get why Spyderco always does these massive finger choils. They are just not necessary on a folder. If they brought the edge all the way back you would be just as close to the edge as with the choil, it is just a waste of blade. It rather makes sense on a fixed blade with a massive guard and to change the balance to a more controlled grip. On a folder however it just makes you carry a huge knife for a little bit of blade.

I'm a bit surprised that all of these knives are contoured for push cuts, and all have a finger guard, with some a rather substantial one. Don't you guys take pull cuts (paring cuts) or pen grip (scoring) into consideration at all? Any chance of at least recommending one EDC knife that'd also be good for everyday tasks like whittling and scoring?

I git a rat 1 because it was highly rated( highly over rated ) .it was cull in the box .first opening lock stick had to unlock it with a screw driver to un lock it . second opening didnt notice the lock fail .it popped shut on my thumb .didnt need stitches ( a sheeple would have ran to emergency room for stiches and sued ) fixed it .good thing i checked it out because it was a pink one for my daughter .wanted to get something better after that .but it worked ok after I fix it . I call them crap 1s . I got the ganzo 727 ( the ratfink ) much better knife ( same size blade shorter handle g lock better stronger ) for a little less money .

These are great knives, no question, but I put my big knife money into my survival knife, and I do carry several folders on me and I get them from Walmart for $3.96. I consider folders to be disposable. Mind you, that doesn't mean you are wrong and I'm right or vice versa, it's your money so spend it like you want. I have a friend who bought a thousand dollar knife and I couldn't believe he spent that much on it, but he did, and yes it was a super-duper little knife. He loved it, then he dropped it while he was showing it to a fellow and he dropped it over board. Now that could happen to anyone, but it happened to him and he was out the grand. Like I said, it that what you're into, great. Have them, enjoy them., I just don't see the fascination with folders, and that's just me.
@bob_345-g3d8 жыл бұрын
I think a good way to look at it is like some people look at cars. A cheap beat up toyota corolla will get you from point a to point b no problem. For some people, that is all they could ever want or need from a vehicle, but some people get really into cars as a hobby or they have a specific need that a corolla cant do. Its kind of the same way in the world of folding knives. Those $3.96 knives will do just as good a job as many high end knives in most typical use cases, but sometimes people just want that extra bit of quality.
@kenparnell42978 жыл бұрын
It really comes down to what you want to spend on a folder, me? I'm getting ready to order a custom knife, survivor style, the knife and case for it will most likely be in the $1400 range. So, I get that. Some guys like the high end folders and some don't, the $3.98 Walmart folders will do everything I need for them to do, and some folks won't agree and that's fine with me. Back in the mid seventies I came across a guy at a flea market who was selling stainless steel "Sharps" brand knives with a leather belt case for $5.00 ea and I talked him down to $4.00 each if I bought twenty of them. I still have three of them, and that was forty years ago. I've lost them, broke them, abused them, pretty much anything went with them. Now would a high end knife out last them? Sure, no question, if we assume you don't loose it or get it stolen from you, sorry but a high end knife like that will very often be too much temptation for an honest man to handle. For me, it's enough, but like I said I do put the money on the other end, with my survival knifes. You usually have only one of them and you require everything from them. Chopping, killing, defending yourself against predators, digging, splitting and just about everything else. It really does come down to what a fellow, or lady. wants in a folder.
