For 9 ball my favorite position, is about 1 inch to the right of the center dot (end of the table) and second dot up( side of the table), I hit square with very slight backspin and as much power as i felt good with (depending on how much I was playing at that time). This was my all around break and had a habit (rough'y 30% according to a friend that watched me) of dropping the 9 ball on the break. One time while warming up for a tournament, I hit three 9 balls out of 5 breaks. My 8 ball break is what I called the Mizerak break (saw it in a vid of his), I start by placing the ball at the right side dot (End of the table) and second dot on side of table. I broke using your 2nd ball technique, with as much backspin and power as possible to prevent scratch. Usually ended up with 1 or two balls down, with a fairly open table

00:34 This is my usual break but I put left middle/high English on the cue and that throws the cue to the rail but instead of back up table, it slams smack dab in the center of the rack… Where the eight/nine is sitting pretty for an easy win. Yes, I do have to worry about my second shot being stuck but I let table luck determine my fate and it almost always works for me instead of against.

I once pocketed eight balls on the break in a quarterfinal match in central Louisiana. We were hill hill and I got the 8 on the snap. While I was bouncing around fist pumping, the referee for the match (Wayne Stevens) said, “Hold on everybody! I want everyone to come here and count the balls left on the table.” There were only seven. I’ve only made five balls on the break a couple of times in 40+ years, but never six and never seven and just that one magical time when I made eight.

2:10 This is my break but I throw the ball to the other side rail. Hitting just off center to the left side of the head-ball with slight top left works better. It allows enough time for all the balls surrounding the nine/eight to get out of the way when the cue comes slamming into it. You should try this method if you’re getting stuck dropping nothing. I’ve been using it for about forty years. That being said, they definitely k ow the stoke on their version. The speed seems to be more important than my style of break. I’ve got to intimate my opponent by making them as def as my right ear.

Thank you for all of your excellent videos. I have played in local pool leagues for a few years now. All of the local leagues play in bars on old Valley tables. The balls are usually dirty and/or worn; the cloth is usually dirty, loose, and with small holes or beer stains; and the old wooden racks make it impossible to get all the balls to touch each other. Maybe you could do a video analyzing how the game changes with those types of conditions. Breaking is the biggest crap shoot on the old Valley tables. You can make 3 balls with the cut break on one table, then step over to the table beside it and never make a ball; Same goes with the side break. It is uncanny! I have read that loose racks result in the 9 ball moving more, and that does seem to be the case. I would love to watch a video of you talking about some of these things--or maybe you already have? Thank you.

I have some advice for how to get a tight rack here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/break/racking/ Although, if the balls and cloth are really bad and you are using a racking triangle (instead of a racking template or table training), there really isn't much you can do to get a consistent and good rack (beyond the things suggested at the link).

I have been very much enjoying your channel lately. You are by all rights a true Doctor of Billiards, your knowledge of billiards is absolutely awe inspiring. I would like to ask you, as I have always wondered, what is your opinion on bending the cue stick on the table after braking, like Thorsten does at 10:00 for example. Tom Cruise also did it with his sledgehammer brake in Color of Money lol. Is there a risk of tearing the cloth and are there any advantages to this technique? Thanks for your videos.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards Жыл бұрын
This is common among power breakers who use a closed bridge and follow through straight and completely. There is no advantage to bending the cue, but following through is important for a powerful break. There is no risk to damaging the cloth unless the cloth is very old and loose.

I’m a brand new player, and 9 ball is so fun! Great game to play by yourself. This video is great. I’ve been watching old tournaments, and have a question: wouldn’t that soft break be illegal anyway since most rules stipulate the 3 ball rule? Where you need a combination of 3 pocketed balls and/or the balls to go behind the breaking line?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 3 жыл бұрын
The 3 point rule is used only in some tournaments. It is not part of the "official rules of pool." Maybe it will be added in the future (including "breaking from the box" and "racking the 9 on the spot"). Another great insightful and entertaining video by Dr. Dave! On a side note, 8/9/10 ball break shots and jump shots videos are the only "best shots" video that will not feature a bunch of shots by Efren! And top pros will often state that the guy that "figures out the break" will have a huge advantage in those games. And despite having an average or below average break his whole career and not using a jump cue, I believe 9 out of 10 serious pool players will agree that Efren is the GOAT of pool. How good is that?

I have a cheap 6ft table with 2&1/4inch balls , Everytime I break regardless of the cue ball position or where I hit the rack, the balls never travel up the table towards the head string. Any idea why this is? some times the balls don't break up that much after a reasonable break.

@@DrDaveBilliards I'm absolutely sure cory would give it his best try 😂. I guess the idea would be to make sure the rack chosen gives the fairest or most random split possible. Currently I sit at APA skill level 5-6 in the Palm Harbor area. When I was a 4 in one of the MVP tournaments, I needed one ball on the break where my opponent needed 3 balls. I break and make 4 balls, and unfortunately scratched... He made one & left himself for the next shot, made the second but hooked himself on the third and final ball. I could tell he was frustrated, as was I, but I had a glimmer of hope with him hooking himself... At this point, being frustrated, kicking at your last ball to seal the win is all you have. What did he do? He kicked extremely hard in hopes to pocket a random ball... What do you think happened?? OF COURSE, he made a random ball. Why would it go the other way?? hahahaha Moral of the story, if I would have attempted to control my cue ball even just the slightest, I would have been out and possibly won the tournament. I used to wonder why 10-ball isn't more popular than 9-ball; the thinking being that an extra ball would add an order of magnitude difficulty. But your break screenshots show that on a 10-ball rack, an ideal break could result in up to six being balls being pocketed. Is this why?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 3 жыл бұрын
10-ball has grown in popularity with the pros because with 9-ball, it is too easy to pocket the wing ball (even with an inaccurate hit at almost any speed) and get a look at the 1. It takes much more skill to pocket balls on the 10-ball break since the hit must be very accurate, and it is not as easy to run out, in general.

The cue hits low on the left rail, then the bottom rail, then the english catches and the cue accelerates up into the back side of the scattering pack giving lots of opportunities for side and top corner pocketing.

I dropped five on a nine ball break once...total fluke...but fun. And wouldn't ya know, none of them was the nine. Sometimes I think if I could drop eight three times in a row, not only would none of them be the nine, I would be in some horrible position on the nine after virtually every break, as well, say one of those four wonderful positions right beside the side pocket with the cue in the appropriate least opportune position. :-/ Obviously not, but some days it feels that way. From what I understand the 3 total, over head string + pocketed rules came at least mostly those breaks Corey genned up. Sharp young man, that one, very creative. Personally I think that was an industrial strength stupid way to formulate the rule, why not just look at cue ball break speed directly if you want to negate soft breaks. Players were (are) actually pocketing two balls at times, or one down, one over, and one a quarter inch from the line and getting their breaks negated. You can easily check break speed with sound alone, and there are ready made apps out there to do that (I used the Predator and it worked great, near as I could tell). It's not like nobody's going to have a smart phone at a tournament. I realize they were trying to simplify, but the rule sucks, MHO. Go ahead, shred my argument. :-)

I used it several times in front of the guy that set up and runs the league, and even he didn't care. I will look up your link.

Corey Duels pattern racking soft break is the reason US 9 ball and other tournaments invented a rule whereby a minimum number of balls must cross the head string after the break. Rather than whining about it (like Mika Immonen) other players should also perfect the soft control pattern racking break and the alternating player break rule used in all matches. This would settle disputes and piss off Corey Duel at the same time. But hey Corey; what goes around comes around - right?

Many tournament rules have been added to combat "breaking strategies" that make the game too easy. Examples include: the 3 point rule, breaking from the box, and the 9 racked on the spot. For more info on the best strategies for each, see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGKzc6Nnl8iFrqc

@@DrDaveBilliards we all know (should know) that pocket billiards culture is characterized by the "hustler" mentality. Any way - any time a player uses a "hustle" he is venerated - celebrated. Probably the primary reason Pocket Billiards historically struggled with attaining mainstream/sponsored television coverage is because the best players of all time were "hustlers" - perceived by the general public to be less than honest...like professional poker players for example. Finding and applying any "advantage" at all is really a basic character flaw in pocket billiards IMHO!

@@51Dss Billiards does have a "seedy" image, mostly from the past, but I think it is improving over time. Although, as long as gambling remains a big component of pool culture, the image will never be as good as with other sports.

I never knew pattern breaking was illegal. I have always used the same pattern just going stripe, solid minus the 8, 9, or 10 which is always center

In English pool the balls are racked in the same pattern every time. I had always assumed it was the same with American 8 ball pool.
@DrDaveBilliards

Nope. The pattern is supposed to be random. Pattern racking is not allowed, and the examples in the video show some examples why.

So I saw! I guess the pattern used in English pool has been designed to spread the two colours (we use red and yellow) evenly on a typical break.

Just so I'm clear about the rules - the 2 and 3 CANNOT be positioned the same way TWICE in a tournament?? I've never heard this, but I suppose it makes sense at a pro level...? Help me out here, I'm confused now...

@6:09 - You can see Corey using two pattern racks for 2nd ball break that sends one suit of balls up table and keep the other suit down table. First he sends the solid balls up table, then the stripes on the next break.

@@DrDaveBilliards I found this match on KZbin where he was playing Stan Tourangeau. Stan didn't pattern rack until he realized Corey was doing it. You can see Stan get out of his chair and take a look at Corey's rack and then he started pattern racking for himself as well. He was able to split the solids and stripes in half, same as Corey.

Best i heard of was 8 balls on the break in a game of 8 ball. Dude got 5 of one and 2 of the other but unfortunately the cue ball. Opponent came up shot in 2 balls and the eightball.
