Many thanks for this video, you explained things much better than the recent instructor I had for beginner wing foiling. Your reasoning, not just stating what happens, was so important. Goog luck with everything!

Thank you David, your "L" foot stance and posture is spot on and a bit of a game changer approach. Lot of thought behind what on the surface seems simple.

Thanks for sharing. Could you let us know what it helped with specifically? Was it jibes or tacks?

@@wingcoachdavid I'm at the point of working out foiling gybes. The "L" foot positioning transformed in about 10 minutes my control of carving S turns and altitude which was a very pleasant surprise. I had a great session using less effort with a straight front arm, and generally working on the skills such as gliding, carving and habit of looking where you are going. I just saw your video of using counter steer technique to initiate lean instead of using the wing.

Thank you David! Super helpful

Thanks Dilly! I've got a video in the pipeline that you and one other student inspired: aerobics for wing foil riders! It will encourage leg responses to choppy waters instead of cranking on the wing with your arms once you get onto the foil. 🙂

Question: I am trying to get on foil but the board is not lifting up despite fairly good speed. The nose of the board is yawing back and forth. Do I need to be farther forward or farther back?

Nice video mate. Good information. I can see your L foot stance working well for just cruising around, but not at all for carving turns especially on waves. You really need the heal and toe pressure to control the roll and angled pitch of the board. Maybe it's just me, but I gave it a go carving some fairly slow speed tight turns, had to work way too hard with my back foot to control the turn. What are your thoughts?

I don't ride waves that much yet, but when I do I have no trouble with this stance. If you need more side to side leverage, move both feet further from the center line in equal measure, retaining the L. The feet now help each other with their respective jobs, but you still have a good division of sensing carve vs. flight control. I think this takes some hours to get used to, but you start to reap benefits right away nonetheless.

The last two days I had 4 great sessions at Fort Pierce jetties park with 3-6' waves and 12-18 mph winds from the north. I used my L stance and it worked great. I think if the back foot is getting tired it could be because the front foot has too little pressure. Move your feet back. I admit my back leg got more tired but not just my calf! I feel the benefits outweigh the cost.

I'm a beginner but apparently I'm lucky enough to be carrying my kitefoiling & windsurfing skills forward to Winging because after 9 sessions I'm jibing consistently and can stay riding for very long stretches. Here is my problem, I'm a 74 year old construction worker with mildly arthritic knees and without switching feet my back knee takes more load stress leaving me with a long recovery after winging. Will your technique help lower the back foot loads?

I'm interested to try this stance but what happens after the jibe? Can you continue without a foot change? It looks like my front foot would be on the wrong rail. Thanks for any tips

Toe side riding works fine with this stance. You get all the benefits I outlined in both stances. Give it a try and know that any change takes time to adjust to, even one for the better!

Good overview. When I’m going upwind, my feet are more centerline, and I’m leaning the board over to windward. When I go downwind my feet are more open stance and closer together as I’m surfing the foil and my wing is not powered up.
